"Register and get a GH₵20 free bet!" Every billboard and timeline in Ghana seems to say it. My brother, a free bet is not GH₵20 in your pocket. It's a ticket with conditions, and the conditions decide whether it's worth GH₵14, GH₵6 or almost nothing. Once you see the maths, you'll never read a promo the same way again.

Rule one: the free bet stake is not returned

This is the part most people miss. When you place a normal GH₵20 bet at odds of 3.00 and win, you get GH₵60 back: GH₵40 profit plus your GH₵20 stake. When you place a GH₵20 free bet at 3.00 and win, most companies pay you only the GH₵40 profit. The "stake" was never yours, so it doesn't come back. In the terms this is called "stake not returned" or "SNR".

Notice how the gap hurts most at short odds. A free bet on a 1.30 favourite pays only GH₵6 on GH₵20 even if it wins. That's why free bets are worth more when you use them on bigger prices.

What a free bet is really worth

For a single free bet with stake not returned, the expected value is roughly:

value ≈ free bet amount × (odds − 1) ÷ odds ÷ (1 + margin)

That looks scary, but it's simple on a calculator. Here's GH₵20 with a typical 6% margin built in:

So a "GH₵20 free bet" is worth somewhere between six and sixteen cedis on average, depending how you play it. Higher odds squeeze more value out, but you'll lose the free bet more often. If you prefer to see some winnings rather than chase the maths, odds around 3.00 to 4.00 are a fair middle ground.

Rollover: when winnings must be played again

Many betting companies don't let you withdraw free bet winnings straight away. They attach a rollover (also called wagering or playthrough). If the terms say "winnings must be wagered 5x at odds of 1.50 or higher", and your free bet won GH₵40, you must place GH₵200 of qualifying bets before the money is withdrawable.

These are averages; real results swing a lot, and if the rollover forces accumulators the margin compounds and the expected loss grows much faster. A 10x rollover on accas can eat almost everything. Lower rollover, or none at all, is the single most important thing to look for.

Minimum odds rules

Most free bets must be placed at a minimum price, often 1.50, 2.00 or higher, and sometimes each leg of an accumulator must meet a minimum too. Watch for these traps:

Expiry: the quiet killer

Free bets often expire in 3, 7 or 14 days, and rollover windows can be just as short. Many punters never use their free bet, or rush it on a random match before midnight. Both throw value away. Before claiming, check three dates: when the free bet must be used, when the rollover must be finished, and whether unused bonus money disappears from your balance after that.

Win caps on free bets

A lot of free bet terms include a maximum win, for example "winnings from free bets are capped at GH₵500". That cap destroys the high-odds strategy above: there's no point using a GH₵20 free bet at 50.00 if you can only collect GH₵500 instead of GH₵980. Always find the cap before deciding your odds.

A simple scorecard for comparing offers

When two betting companies both shout "free bet", score them on these five lines:

1. Stake returned? Rare, but a big plus if yes.
2. Rollover multiple on winnings: none is best, 1x fine, 5x+ costly.
3. Minimum odds and legs: singles allowed beats accas forced.
4. Expiry: 7 days or more gives breathing room.
5. Win cap: the higher, the better.

A GH₵10 free bet with no rollover and singles allowed is often worth more than a GH₵50 free bet with 10x rollover on four-leg accas.

A full worked example: claiming a sign-up offer from start to finish

Let's walk an invented but typical offer through, so you can see where the cedis actually go. Say a company advertises: "Deposit GH₵50, place a GH₵50 qualifying bet at odds of 1.80 or higher, and receive a GH₵50 free bet. Free bet winnings carry 3x rollover at 1.50+ and the free bet expires in 7 days."

1. The qualifying bet. You stake GH₵50 of your own money at 1.80. With a 6% margin, that bet's expected cost is about GH₵3. You might win, you might lose, but on average you've paid three cedis to unlock the promo.
2. The free bet. You use the GH₵50 free bet at 3.50. Stake not returned, so a win pays GH₵125 in bonus winnings. The expected value is roughly GH₵50 × 2.5 ÷ 3.5 ÷ 1.06, about GH₵33.70.
3. The rollover. If it wins, those GH₵125 must be wagered 3x, so GH₵375 of qualifying bets. Expected cost at 6% margin: about GH₵22.50.
4. Put together. Expected value of the free bet after rollover is roughly the GH₵33.70 multiplied by the share left after rollover (about 82%), so near GH₵27.60, minus the GH₵3 cost of the qualifying bet. Net: around GH₵24.60 of real expected value from a "GH₵50 free bet".

That's still positive, which is why some offers are worth claiming. But it's half the headline, and if the rollover had been 10x on accumulators, the number would be close to zero. Doing this rough sum for two minutes before you sign up is the best habit you can build.

Free bet vs deposit bonus: which is better?

Companies in Ghana often offer one or the other, and people treat them as the same thing. They're not.

The deposit-locking point is the big one. If a bonus locks your own GH₵200 deposit until you finish a 10x rollover on bonus plus deposit, you're committed to GH₵4,000 of bets before you can touch any of it. A modest free bet with no strings is far gentler for most people.

Using a free bet on an accumulator: good idea or not?

Because the stake isn't returned, some punters put free bets on accas to chase a big win. The maths cuts both ways. Higher combined odds do keep more of the free bet's value, as the table above showed. But every extra leg adds the bookmaker's margin again, so a five-leg acca at 6% per leg is carrying roughly 34% of compounded margin. That quickly outweighs the benefit of the higher price.

A two-leg double at combined odds around 3.00 to 4.00 is usually a better use than a seven-leg monster. And if the free bet has a win cap, check that your acca can't win more than the cap, or you're throwing away the upside you were chasing.

The household and device clause catches many people in Ghana where brothers, sisters and housemates share one phone or one router. If two of you claim the same offer, one account may lose it. Read that line before you both sign up.

Verification before the free bet

Most licensed betting companies need your Ghana Card or other ID, and your MoMo name to match your account name, before they credit or pay out a promotion. Do the verification first, while nothing is at stake, so a winning free bet isn't stuck for days waiting on documents.

Licence first, promo second

A generous free bet from a company that won't pay out is worth zero. Locally, sports betting companies are licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, which gives you a complaint route.
