For most brothers in Ghana, betting money lives on the phone. You top up your MoMo wallet, send to the bookmaker, and when a coupon cuts or comes in, the winnings land back on the same wallet. Simple. Until a deposit hangs, a withdrawal says "successful" but your balance has not moved, or someone calls claiming they sent you money by mistake. This guide is about the money side of MTN MoMo betting: how it actually flows, what to check before you approve anything, and how to protect your wallet.
18+ only. Use only bookmakers licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana for MoMo payments. Cloudbet, the crypto sportsbook we link to, is licensed in Curaçao, is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, and does not take MoMo; it works with crypto. See our Ghana legality guide for the full picture.

How money moves between MoMo and a bookmaker
When you deposit to a Ghana-licensed bookmaker with MTN MoMo, your money is not "sent to a person". It goes to the operator's registered merchant or collection account through a payment provider. When you withdraw, the operator pays out from its account back to your wallet. That chain matters because each link can delay or fail:
- You request a deposit on the bookmaker's site or app and enter your MoMo number and amount.
- The bookmaker's payment partner sends a request to MTN.
- Your phone shows an approval prompt (or you follow the bookmaker's payment instructions through the MoMo menu). You approve with your PIN.
- MTN debits your wallet and confirms to the payment partner.
- The payment partner confirms to the bookmaker, which credits your betting balance.
Withdrawals run the same chain in reverse, with one extra step at the start: the bookmaker's own checks, such as whether your account is verified and whether any bonus rules are still active.
The approval prompt: read it every single time
The most important habit in MoMo betting is reading the prompt before you type your PIN. A legitimate deposit prompt names the merchant or payment provider and shows the amount you entered. Scammers abuse these prompts by triggering a payment request to your number and then calling or texting to convince you to approve it. If you did not just start a deposit yourself, and the amount and merchant do not match exactly, cancel it. Approving a prompt means sending money, not receiving it. Nobody needs your approval to send you money.
Name matching and verification
Bookmakers generally expect the MoMo wallet you use to be registered in the same name as your betting account. Using a friend's or a sibling's wallet can work for a deposit but cause trouble at withdrawal time, when the operator checks that the payout goes to the account holder. Practical rules:
- Register your MoMo wallet with your own Ghana Card details, and use the same name on your betting account.
- Do not share a betting account or a wallet between people. If something goes wrong, nobody can prove whose money it was.
- If you change phone numbers, update the wallet on your betting account before you request a withdrawal.
Fees, levies and limits
Costs on MoMo betting come from three places, and they change, so check the current figures rather than trusting an old post:
- The bookmaker: many local operators advertise free deposits and withdrawals, while some charge on small withdrawals or set minimums. Read the payments page.
- MTN: sending to a merchant is usually treated differently from a person-to-person transfer, and cashing out at an agent has its own charge. Check the current MTN MoMo tariff.
- Government levies: the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) that applied to many MoMo transfers was repealed by the Electronic Transfer Levy (Repeal) Act, 2025, with assent on 2 April 2025. If you see an old article quoting it, it is out of date. Check for any new charges in the latest budget.
Wallet limits matter too. MoMo wallets have daily and balance limits that depend on how fully the account is registered. If you plan to deposit or withdraw larger amounts, check your wallet tier with MTN first, otherwise a big win may need several withdrawals over more than one day.
Example of why small fees matter (illustrative): if a bookmaker charged GH₵1 on a GH₵10 withdrawal, that is 10% of your money. On a GH₵200 withdrawal, the same fee is 0.5%. Withdraw in fewer, larger amounts where the rules allow, rather than pulling out every small win.
When a deposit or withdrawal goes wrong
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet debited, betting balance not credited | Delay between MTN, payment partner and bookmaker | Wait a short while, then contact the bookmaker with the MoMo transaction ID and time |
| No approval prompt appears | Network issue or prompt timed out | Retry once; do not keep retrying or you may get multiple debits |
| Withdrawal marked successful, wallet unchanged | Payment partner delay or wrong number on file | Check the number on your betting account, then contact support with the withdrawal reference |
| Withdrawal rejected | Account not verified, bonus wagering incomplete, or name mismatch | Read the rejection message; complete verification or bonus rules |
| Money sent to a personal number by mistake | Paying an "agent" instead of the operator | Report to MTN immediately; such payments are often unrecoverable |
Always keep the MTN confirmation SMS. The transaction ID in it is what both MTN and the bookmaker need to trace your money. Escalate to the bookmaker first; if a licensed operator does not resolve it, you can raise it with the Gaming Commission of Ghana.

MoMo scams aimed at bettors
- "I sent you money by mistake." A fake SMS that looks like a MoMo credit, followed by a call begging you to send it back. Check your real balance through the MoMo menu, not the SMS. If the money is not in your balance, it was never sent.
- Fake agents and "booking code sellers" who ask you to pay a personal MoMo number for a "sure code" or a "fixed match". There are no fixed matches for sale; there are only people selling stories.
- Fake customer care on Facebook or WhatsApp offering to fix a stuck withdrawal if you share your PIN or approve a prompt. Real support never asks for your PIN.
- "Unlock fee" demands from fake betting sites that show a big balance but say you must pay a fee to withdraw. That is the scam; the balance is not real.
- SIM swap attempts: if your phone suddenly loses network for no reason, contact MTN quickly. A swapped SIM can give someone access to your wallet.
Protecting your wallet day to day
- Never share your MoMo PIN, not even with family. Change it if you think someone has seen it.
- Keep only your betting budget on the wallet you use for betting, or move money in only when you plan to bet.
- Turn on any app lock or extra security the MoMo app offers.
- Deposit only through the bookmaker's own site or app, never through links sent in chats.
- Check the bookmaker is on the Gaming Commission's list of licensed operators before your first deposit.
Budgeting with MoMo
MoMo makes betting fast, and fast is the enemy of a budget. A few tricks that help:
- One deposit per week. Decide your weekly betting money, deposit it once, and do not top up mid-week.
- Use the bookmaker's deposit limit. Licensed local operators offer daily, weekly or monthly limits in account settings. Set one before you need it.
- Withdraw a fixed share of wins. For example, take out half of any win above a set amount so not everything goes back into the next coupon.
- Look at your MoMo statement once a month. Add up every payment to betting merchants. Many people are surprised by the total.

Where crypto sportsbooks fit
Offshore crypto books such as Cloudbet do not accept MoMo directly. People who use them usually buy crypto, often USDT, through an exchange or a peer-to-peer marketplace where MoMo is one of the payment methods between buyer and seller, then deposit the crypto to the sportsbook. If you go that way:
- Use only the marketplace's escrow process and never release coins or send MoMo outside it.
- Check that the name on the MoMo payment matches the trader's verified name on the platform.
- Count the spread between the buy and sell price as a real cost of betting.
- Remember that offshore books are not supervised by the Gaming Commission, so local complaint routes do not apply.

My take
MTN MoMo betting is convenient because it is fast, and it is risky for the same reason. Read every approval prompt, keep your wallet and betting account in your own name, keep the confirmation SMS, and never pay a personal number for anything betting-related. Set a deposit limit and stick to it. Questions punters ask
Can I bet with MTN MoMo in Ghana?
Yes. Most Ghana-licensed bookmakers accept MTN MoMo deposits and pay withdrawals back to MoMo wallets. Check the operator is on the Gaming Commission's licensed list first.
Why was my MoMo debited but my betting balance not credited?
Usually a delay between MTN, the payment partner and the bookmaker. Keep the MTN SMS and send the transaction ID to the bookmaker's support.
Do I pay E-Levy on MoMo betting deposits?
The E-Levy was repealed with effect from 2 April 2025. Bookmaker and MTN fees may still apply, so check current tariffs.
Can I use someone else's MoMo for betting?
It is a bad idea. Withdrawals are normally paid only to a wallet in the account holder's name, and shared wallets cause disputes.
Does Cloudbet accept MTN MoMo?
No. Cloudbet is a crypto sportsbook licensed in Curaçao and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.
