Types of Betting in Ghana Explained: Every Bet Type From 1X2 to Asian Handicap, With Cedi Examples

Open any betting app in Ghana and you'll see a wall of options: 1X2, DC, GG, Over 2.5, HT/FT, Handicap −1, Combo, System 3/5. If you're new, it looks like code. Even old-timers often stick to the same two or three bets because nobody ever explained the rest. My brother, this page is that explanation: each bet type in plain language, how it pays in cedis, and which ones quietly carry the fattest bookmaker margin.
18+ only. Odds and payouts here are worked examples. Cloudbet, the crypto sportsbook we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana; licensed local operators appear on the Commission's list. Betting is entertainment with a built-in cost, so stake only what you're happy to lose.

How payouts work (read this first)
Almost every Ghanaian app shows decimal odds. Your total return on a winning bet is simply stake × odds. A GH₵20 bet at 2.50 returns GH₵50: your GH₵20 back plus GH₵30 profit. Keep that one formula in mind and every bet type below becomes easy.
The other thing to know is that each market has its own margin, the slice the bookmaker keeps. Some bet types are cheap, some are expensive. We'll flag which is which as we go.
1. Match result (1X2)
The classic. "1" is the home team wins, "X" is a draw, "2" is the away team wins, all judged at the end of normal time (90 minutes plus stoppage time, not extra time or penalties).
Example: Hearts of Oak vs Asante Kotoko. Hearts 2.40, Draw 3.00, Kotoko 3.10. GH₵10 on Kotoko returns GH₵31 if they win.
Margin: Usually low on big leagues, higher on smaller ones. A good default bet.
2. Double chance (DC)
You cover two of the three outcomes: 1X (home or draw), X2 (away or draw), or 12 (either team wins, no draw).
Example: X2 on Kotoko at 1.55. GH₵10 returns GH₵15.50 if Kotoko win or draw.
Watch out: Double chance feels safe, so people stack many DC legs into accas. The odds are short, and the margin from each leg piles up. Safe-looking is not the same as good value.
3. Draw no bet (DNB)
You pick a team. If they win, you're paid. If it's a draw, your stake comes back. If they lose, you lose.
Example: Hearts DNB at 1.70. GH₵10: win returns GH₵17, draw returns GH₵10, loss returns nothing.
DNB is the same thing as an Asian handicap of 0, and it's a neat option when you think a team won't lose but aren't confident they'll win.
4. Over/Under goals
You bet on the total number of goals. "Over 2.5" means three or more goals; "Under 2.5" means two or fewer. The ".5" means there's no possible tie.
| Line | Over wins if… | Under wins if… |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 1+ goals | 0–0 |
| 1.5 | 2+ goals | 0 or 1 goal |
| 2.5 | 3+ goals | 0, 1 or 2 goals |
| 3.5 | 4+ goals | 3 or fewer |
Margin: The main line (usually 2.5) is one of the cheapest markets in football. Exotic lines carry more.
Ghana Premier League matches have historically tended to be lower scoring than many European leagues, so don't copy your EPL over-2.5 habits straight into local football without checking recent scoring.
5. Both teams to score (GG/NG)
"GG" (goal-goal) means both teams score at least once. "NG" (no goal) means at least one team fails to score. The final score just needs to show both sides on the scoresheet; 1–1 and 3–2 are both GG.
Example: GG at 1.85. GH₵20 returns GH₵37 if both score.
6. Handicap betting
Handicaps level the playing field when one team is much stronger. There are two main families.
European (three-way) handicap
One team gets a goal head start or deficit, and you bet on the result after applying it, with a draw still possible. "Home −1" means you subtract one goal from the home team's score. If they win 2–0, the handicap result is 1–0, so Home −1 wins. If they win 1–0, the handicap result is a draw, so Home −1 loses (and "Handicap draw" wins).
Asian handicap
Asian handicaps remove the draw, which makes them two-way and usually lower margin. They use half and quarter lines:
| Line on your team | Your team wins by 2 | Wins by 1 | Draw | Loses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (same as DNB) | Win | Win | Stake back | Lose |
| −0.5 | Win | Win | Lose | Lose |
| −1.0 | Win | Stake back | Lose | Lose |
| −1.5 | Win | Lose | Lose | Lose |
| +0.5 | Win | Win | Win | Lose |
Quarter lines like −0.25 or −0.75 split your stake in half across the two neighbouring lines. On −0.75, a one-goal win means half your stake wins at −0.5 and half is returned at −1.0.
Margin: Main Asian handicap lines are among the sharpest prices any bookmaker offers. If you want value, learn these.
7. Correct score
You pick the exact final score. Odds are high because it's hard: 1–0 might be 6.50, 2–1 around 8.50, 0–0 maybe 9.00 depending on the match.
Margin: High. There are many possible scores and each carries a slice of the bookmaker's edge. Fun for small stakes, expensive as a habit.
8. Half-time/full-time (HT/FT)
You predict the result at half-time and full-time together, for example "Draw/Hearts" means level at the break and Hearts winning at the end. Nine combinations, higher odds, higher margin. A popular "big odds" bet that rarely represents good value.
9. Accumulators (multiples, combos)
An acca combines several selections into one bet. All must win. The odds multiply: three legs at 1.80, 2.00 and 1.50 give 5.40. GH₵10 returns GH₵54.
Accas are hugely popular in Ghana because a small stake can produce a big return. The catch is that the bookmaker's margin multiplies too. Five legs each carrying a 6% margin eat roughly a quarter of your expected return compared with fair prices, and ten legs eat over 40%. And the more legs, the more one late equaliser kills everything.
| Legs at about 1.80 each | Combined odds | GH₵10 returns | Rough chance all win (with margin) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 3.24 | GH₵32.40 | about 27% |
| 4 | 10.50 | GH₵105 | about 7.5% |
| 6 | 34.01 | GH₵340 | about 2% |
| 10 | 357.05 | GH₵3,570 | about 0.16% |
Many apps add acca bonuses for longer slips. Check whether the bonus is bigger than the margin you're stacking. Usually it isn't.

10. System bets
A system bet is a set of smaller accas built from your selections, so you can still win something if one or two legs lose. "System 2/3" with three selections creates three doubles. "System 3/5" creates every possible treble from five picks, which is ten bets.
Example: System 2/3, GH₵5 per line, so GH₵15 in total. If two of your three picks win, one double pays. If all three win, all three doubles pay.
The important point: your total stake is the stake per line times the number of lines. System 4/8 is seventy lines, so GH₵2 per line is GH₵140. People get caught out by that all the time.
11. Live (in-play) betting
Bets placed while the match is running, with odds changing every few seconds. Every market above can be offered live: next goal, live over/under, live handicap and more. Live betting is exciting, but margins are usually higher than pre-match, and the speed encourages impulse bets. If you bet live, decide your stake before kick-off.
Many apps also offer cash-out, letting you settle a bet early for a price the bookmaker sets. That price includes margin, so cashing out regularly costs you over time.
12. Outright (futures) bets
Bets on a long-term result: who wins the Ghana Premier League, the Premier League, the Champions League or the Africa Cup of Nations, top scorer, relegation. Your money is tied up for months, and outright markets tend to carry larger margins because there are many runners.
13. Player props and specials
Bets on what an individual does: anytime goalscorer, first goalscorer, shots on target, assists, cards. Also team specials like corners and bookings. These are fun if you follow a team closely, but margins are generally higher than on main markets, and lower-league props especially can be expensive.
14. Virtual football and other virtuals
Computer-generated matches that run every few minutes. They're a game of chance with a fixed built-in edge, not real sport, so form and knowledge mean nothing. The speed makes them one of the fastest ways to lose a budget. Treat them like a casino game, not a football bet.
15. Goal ranges, odd/even and other app extras
Many Ghanaian apps add extra markets you won't find everywhere. Multigoal or goal-range bets pay if the total goals fall inside a band, such as 2–4 goals. Odd/even pays on whether the total goals is an odd or even number (0–0 counts as even). First half / second half markets copy the full-time ones but only for one half, and "highest scoring half" asks which half has more goals. These are easy to understand but usually priced with more margin than the main lines, because fewer punters compare them across sites. Use them for variety, not as your main diet.
Bet types ranked by typical margin
| Usually cheaper | Middle | Usually expensive |
|---|---|---|
| Asian handicap main lines | Double chance | Correct score |
| Over/under 2.5 main line | GG/NG | HT/FT |
| 1X2 on big leagues | European handicap | First goalscorer |
| Draw no bet | Live main markets | Long accumulators |
| Outrights on big competitions | Virtuals |
"Expensive" doesn't mean never play it. It means know that you're paying more for the thrill, and keep those stakes small.
Rules that trip people up
- 90 minutes only. Most football markets settle on normal time. Extra time and penalties don't count unless the market says "to qualify" or "to lift the trophy".
- Postponed and abandoned matches. Each bookmaker has a rule, often that the bet is void if the match isn't played within a set window. In an acca, the void leg is usually counted at odds of 1.00.
- Player not starting. Some goalscorer markets void if the player doesn't play; others don't. Check the rule.
- Dead heats in top scorer markets can reduce your payout when players tie.
- Maximum payout limits can cap big acca wins, whatever the odds say.
Which bet types suit beginners?
Start with singles on 1X2, over/under 2.5 and draw no bet on leagues you actually watch. Keep accas to two or three legs if you play them at all. Once comfortable, learn Asian handicaps; they're where sharp prices live. Leave correct score, HT/FT and long accas as small "fun" bets. And skip virtuals unless you treat them purely as a casino game with a fixed cost.
Licence and limits
Whatever bet type you choose, place it with an operator you've checked. Licensed companies in Ghana answer to the Gaming Commission. Offshore crypto books such as Cloudbet offer a wide range of markets, including Asian handicaps and player props, but they're not licensed in Ghana. Set a weekly budget, use deposit limits, and never chase losses with bigger, riskier bet types. My take
The main types of betting in Ghana come down to a handful of building blocks: match result, double chance, draw no bet, goals totals, GG/NG, handicaps, correct score, HT/FT, accas, system bets, live markets, outrights and props. The cheap ones are the main lines on big leagues, especially Asian handicaps and over/under 2.5. The expensive ones are the long-odds, many-outcome bets and long accumulators. Learn how each pays, check the settlement rules, and you'll already be betting smarter than most of the slips posted in group chats.
Questions punters ask
What does 1X2 mean in betting?
1 is a home win, X is a draw and 2 is an away win, settled at the end of normal time.
What is GG and NG?
GG means both teams score at least one goal; NG means at least one team doesn't score.
What's the difference between European and Asian handicap?
European handicaps keep the draw as an outcome; Asian handicaps remove it using half and quarter lines, which usually gives lower margins.
How much does a system bet cost?
Your stake per line times the number of lines. System 2/3 has three lines; System 3/5 has ten.
Is Cloudbet licensed in Ghana?
No. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.
