How to Bet on Roulette and Win: The Honest Ghana Guide to Odds, House Edge, Bet Types and Walking Away Ahead

My brother, let me save you money in the first paragraph. There is no betting pattern, no app and no Telegram "strategy" that makes roulette profitable in the long run. Every bet on the table has a built-in house edge, and no combination of bets removes it. What you can do is choose the wheel with the smallest edge, pick bets that match how you want your session to feel, keep your stakes sensible, and walk away while you're ahead on a good night. That's what "winning" at roulette realistically looks like, and this page shows you exactly how to do it.

How roulette works
A roulette wheel has numbered pockets. The dealer (or a random number generator in online games) spins the wheel and a ball lands in one pocket. You bet on which number, colour or group of numbers it lands on before the spin.
The wheel type matters more than anything else you'll choose:
| Wheel | Pockets | House edge |
|---|---|---|
| European (single zero) | 1–36 plus 0 (37 pockets) | 2.70% |
| French (single zero, with La Partage or En Prison) | 37 pockets | 1.35% on even-money bets, 2.70% on others |
| American (double zero) | 1–36 plus 0 and 00 (38 pockets) | 5.26% (the "top line" five-number bet is worse, 7.89%) |
The edge comes from the zero. A straight-up bet pays 35 to 1, but on a European wheel there are 37 pockets, so the "fair" payout would be 36 to 1. That one missing unit is the house's cut on every spin.
Rule number one for winning more often: never play American roulette if a European or French table is available. You're paying nearly double the edge for no benefit.
Every roulette bet and what it pays
| Bet | Covers | Pays | Win chance (European) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 number | 35 to 1 | 2.7% |
| Split | 2 numbers | 17 to 1 | 5.4% |
| Street | 3 numbers | 11 to 1 | 8.1% |
| Corner | 4 numbers | 8 to 1 | 10.8% |
| Six line | 6 numbers | 5 to 1 | 16.2% |
| Dozen or column | 12 numbers | 2 to 1 | 32.4% |
| Red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36 | 18 numbers | 1 to 1 | 48.6% |
Look at the last column. Even the "50/50" bets are only 48.6% on a European wheel, because the zero loses for them. On American roulette they drop to 47.4%.
Here's the key insight: on a European wheel, every one of these bets has the same 2.70% house edge. A straight-up bet isn't "riskier" in expected-value terms than red or black. It's just more volatile: you win rarely but big, instead of often but small.
What "winning" at roulette really means
Because the edge is fixed, you can't win over thousands of spins. But you absolutely can win on a single session, and lots of people do every night. The goal of a smart roulette player is:
- Lose as little as possible per hour of entertainment.
- Have a fair chance of finishing a session ahead.
- Leave with that profit instead of handing it back.
That's it. Anything promising more is selling you something.
The expected cost of a session, in cedis
Expected loss = total amount bet × house edge. Say you bet GH₵10 per spin on a European live table that runs about 40 spins an hour. You've bet GH₵400 in an hour, so your expected cost is about GH₵400 × 2.7% ≈ GH₵10.80 an hour. On American roulette the same session costs about GH₵21 an hour.
Online RNG roulette can spin much faster than a live table, sometimes several hundred spins an hour if you click quickly. At GH₵10 a spin and 300 spins, that's GH₵3,000 wagered and an expected cost of about GH₵81 an hour. Speed is the silent killer. Slow down and your money lasts far longer.
| Setup | Spins/hour | Stake | Wagered/hour | Expected cost/hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| European live table | 40 | GH₵10 | GH₵400 | ≈ GH₵10.80 |
| American live table | 40 | GH₵10 | GH₵400 | ≈ GH₵21.04 |
| European RNG, fast clicking | 300 | GH₵10 | GH₵3,000 | ≈ GH₵81 |
| French, even-money only, live | 40 | GH₵10 | GH₵400 | ≈ GH₵5.40 |
French roulette: the best deal on the floor
French roulette uses a single-zero wheel with one extra rule on even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, high/low):
- La Partage: if the ball lands on zero, you get half your even-money stake back.
- En Prison: if zero hits, your even-money stake is "imprisoned" for the next spin. If that spin wins, you get your stake back.
Either rule cuts the house edge on those bets to 1.35%. If your casino offers a French table and you like even-money bets, it's the cheapest roulette you'll find.
Choosing bets that fit your style
Since the edge is the same (on a European wheel), the choice is about how you want your night to feel:
- Long, calm session: even-money bets. Your balance moves slowly up and down, and you get lots of spins for your money.
- Balanced: dozens and columns. You win about one spin in three, at 2 to 1.
- Shot at a big win: straight-up numbers or a few splits. You'll lose most spins, but one hit pays 35 times your stake.
Mixing bets doesn't change the maths either. Covering lots of numbers just means you win more often but less each time, and the zero still takes its share.
Volatility in real numbers: chasing one lucky number
Lots of players have a "special" number, a birthday or a jersey number, and bet it every spin. Let's see what that really looks like on a European wheel. The chance of your number hitting at least once in 37 spins is about 64%. That means roughly one session in three, you'll go 37 spins without a single hit. If you bet GH₵5 a spin, that's GH₵185 gone without a win.
When it does hit, you get GH₵175 profit plus your GH₵5 stake back. So hitting once in 36 spins leaves you about even, hitting twice puts you well ahead, and missing entirely is a heavy loss. That's what high volatility means: the same 2.70% average edge, but much wilder sessions. Size your stakes so a long dry spell doesn't finish your bankroll in twenty minutes.
Racetrack and call bets
Many online and French tables show a "racetrack" layout with named bets that cover sections of the wheel, such as Voisins du Zéro (the numbers around zero), Tiers du Cylindre (the third of the wheel opposite zero) and Orphelins (the leftover numbers). They look sophisticated, but they're just bundles of splits, streets and straight-ups placed together. The house edge stays at 2.70% on a single-zero wheel. Use them if you enjoy them, not because they're smarter.

Why roulette systems don't work
Every few months a "new" roulette system goes viral. They're all variations of old ideas:
- Martingale: double your bet after every loss. It wins small amounts most of the time and then hits a losing streak that wipes out the bankroll or hits the table maximum. We explain the maths in detail in our guide to the doubling strategy.
- Reverse Martingale (Paroli): double after wins. Fun, but the edge is unchanged.
- D'Alembert: add one unit after a loss, remove one after a win. Slower, same edge.
- Fibonacci: follow the 1-1-2-3-5-8 sequence after losses. Same problem as Martingale, just slower.
- "Hot" and "cold" numbers: the wheel has no memory. Each spin is independent. Red coming ten times in a row doesn't make black "due".
A betting system only changes how your results are distributed. It never changes the average. Anyone selling a system "proven" to win is either mistaken or scamming you.
Roulette "predictors" and hacks
On Telegram, TikTok and WhatsApp you'll see apps that claim to predict the next number on online roulette. They don't work. Licensed RNG games use certified random number generators, and live tables use a physical wheel. Many "predictor" apps are designed to steal your login, your crypto or a "subscription fee". Never install them and never share casino account details.
A simple session plan that gives you a chance to finish ahead
- Set a session bankroll you're happy to lose completely, for example GH₵300.
- Choose a European or French table, ideally live, so the pace is slower.
- Pick a flat stake of about 2% to 5% of the bankroll, so GH₵6 to GH₵15.
- Set a win goal, for example +50% (GH₵150). If you hit it, stop and cash out.
- Set a loss limit, the whole bankroll or half of it. When you hit it, stop.
- Set a time limit, say 45 minutes, whatever the result.
- Never top up mid-session. That's how one bad night turns into three.
With a +50% stop-win and a full-bankroll stop-loss, you'll finish ahead in a decent share of sessions, but your losing sessions will be bigger than your winning ones. The average still carries the house edge. The plan just keeps you in control and stops you giving wins back.
Live dealer vs RNG roulette
| Live dealer | RNG (digital) | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Slower, about 30–50 spins an hour | As fast as you click |
| Feel | Real wheel, real person | Animated |
| Data use | Higher (video stream) | Low |
| Expected cost per hour | Lower, because slower | Higher if you play fast |
If your internet is patchy or you're worried about data bundles, RNG uses less data, but force yourself to slow down. If there's light out mid-spin, live games usually settle the spin anyway; check the casino's disconnection rules.
Playing roulette at a crypto casino from Ghana
Most players fund crypto casinos by buying USDT with MoMo from a reputable P2P trader and depositing it. A few habits:
- Use a stablecoin so your casino balance doesn't change with Bitcoin's price.
- Match the deposit network exactly, and send a small test first.
- Check the game's RTP in its info panel. European roulette is usually listed at 97.30% RTP, which is the flip side of the 2.70% edge.
- Read bonus terms. Roulette often contributes little or nothing to bonus wagering. Cloudbet's terms, for example, say live and virtual table games count only 10% towards wagering. Playing roulette to clear a bonus is usually a bad deal.
- Withdraw wins instead of leaving them in the balance where they tempt you.
See our crypto casino deposit guide for the full MoMo-to-USDT walk-through.
Roulette myths, quickly
- "Online roulette is rigged." Reputable games use certified RNGs, but this is exactly why licensing matters. Unlicensed apps can do anything.
- "Betting on many numbers is safer." It wins more often, but the edge is identical.
- "A number is due." It isn't. Every spin is independent.
- "Dealers can aim the ball." Even if a human could influence a live wheel, modern tables, random spin speeds and ball changes make it irrelevant for players.
- "VIP tables have better odds." Higher limits, same edge.
When to walk away
Roulette is fast and hypnotic. If you catch yourself chasing losses, raising stakes to "win it back", playing with money meant for rent or school fees, or hiding how much you play, stop. My take
You can't beat roulette long term, but you can play it smartly. Choose European or French wheels, never American if you have a choice, and use French even-money bets when available for a 1.35% edge. Pick bets for how you want the session to feel, not because you think they're "safer". Ignore systems and predictor apps, slow down to cut your hourly cost, set a stop-win and stop-loss before you start, and cash out when you hit your target. That's how you give yourself the best chance of walking away a winner on any given night. Cloudbet runs roulette tables, but it isn't licensed by Ghana's Gaming Commission.
Questions punters ask
Can you really win at roulette?
You can win in a single session, but no strategy beats the house edge over the long run. The best you can do is minimise the edge and stop when you're ahead.
Which roulette has the best odds?
French roulette with La Partage or En Prison on even-money bets (1.35% edge), then European single-zero roulette (2.70%). American double-zero is worst (5.26%).
Does the Martingale strategy work?
No. It wins small amounts often but eventually hits a losing streak or table limit that wipes out the gains.
Are roulette predictor apps real?
No. Certified RNGs and physical wheels can't be predicted, and many predictor apps are scams.
Is Cloudbet licensed in Ghana?
No. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.
