"Provably fair" is one of those phrases crypto casinos love to put in big letters. It sounds like a promise that you can't lose, my brother, and it is nothing of the sort. What it actually means is narrower and still useful: for certain games, you can check with simple maths that the casino did not change the result after you placed your bet. This guide shows how that works in plain language, walks through a real verification example step by step, and then explains what provably fair does not protect you from, which is where most Ghanaian players get burned.
18+ only. Casino games always carry a house edge and most players lose over time. Online casino gaming in Ghana falls under the Gaming Commission of Ghana and the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet, the crypto casino we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.

The problem provably fair tries to solve
When you play a slot or a dice game online, you can't see the machine. A random number is generated somewhere on a server, and you are told the result. So the honest question is: how do you know the casino didn't look at your bet first and then choose a losing number?
There are two broad answers in the industry:
- Third-party testing. Big game studios send their random number generators (RNGs) to testing labs, and the regulator that licenses them relies on those certificates. You are trusting the lab and the regulator.
- Provably fair. The casino commits to a secret in advance, in a way it can't change later, and then lets you check every result yourself after the fact. You are trusting maths you can run on your own phone.
Neither one changes the house edge. Both are only about whether the game is played straight.
The three ingredients: server seed, client seed and nonce
Almost every provably fair system uses the same three pieces:
| Ingredient | Who controls it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Server seed | The casino | A secret random string. The casino shows you only its hash (a fingerprint) before you play. |
| Client seed | You (or your browser) | Your own string. Because you can change it, the casino can't prepare results in advance that suit it. |
| Nonce | A counter | Goes up by one each bet (1, 2, 3...), so every round with the same seeds gives a new result. |
The result of each round is worked out by mixing those three together with a hash function, usually HMAC-SHA256 or plain SHA-256. When you are finished, you ask the casino to "rotate" the seed. It then reveals the old server seed, and you can check two things: that it matches the fingerprint you were shown, and that it produces exactly the results you got.
What a hash is, in one minute
A hash function takes any text and turns it into a fixed-length string of letters and numbers. SHA-256 always gives 64 characters. Three properties make it useful here:
- The same input always gives the same output.
- Change one letter of the input and the output changes completely.
- You can't work backwards from the output to the input.
So when a casino shows you the SHA-256 hash of its server seed before you play, it has locked itself in. It can't swap to a different seed later without the fingerprint giving it away. And because you can't work backwards, seeing the fingerprint doesn't tell you the results in advance.
A worked example you can repeat yourself
Here is a real calculation, using made-up seeds. Any computer with Python, or an online HMAC-SHA256 tool, will give you the same numbers.
- Server seed (secret until you rotate):
ghana-example-server-seed-2026 - Fingerprint shown before play, SHA-256 of the server seed:
8ea2adf98180c5cf5ca68ab76ce9c4c4e940d5fa3c684bec52cff39f0d6a9b51 - Client seed you chose:
my-lucky-client-seed
For each bet, our example game computes HMAC-SHA256 with the server seed as the key and "client seed:nonce" as the message, takes the first 8 hex characters, turns them into a number, divides by 232 and multiplies by 100 to get a dice roll between 0 and 100.
| Nonce | First 8 hex characters | As a number | Dice roll |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1877ff8c | 410,517,388 | 9.56 |
| 2 | 495ef480 | 1,230,959,744 | 28.66 |
| 3 | 9ca54174 | 2,628,075,892 | 61.19 |
After you rotate seeds, the casino shows ghana-example-server-seed-2026. You hash it, you get the same 8ea2... fingerprint, and you rerun the three rolls. If everything matches, those three results were fixed the moment you chose your client seed and could not have been changed to suit the house.
Real casinos each use their own exact formula (some take more characters, some skip values to avoid bias, some map to cards or crash multipliers instead of dice). The formula should be published on the game's "fairness" page. If it isn't, you can't verify anything, whatever the banner says.
How to actually check on your phone
- Before you play, open the game's fairness or "provably fair" panel and screenshot the hashed server seed.
- Change the client seed to something of your own. It doesn't need to be clever, just yours.
- Play your session and note a few nonces and results.
- Rotate the seed. Copy the revealed server seed.
- Hash it with any SHA-256 tool and compare with your screenshot.
- Use the casino's own verifier, then a second independent one, to recompute a couple of results.
You don't need to check every bet. Checking a handful at random is enough to catch a casino that cheats, because a cheating casino would have to cheat on many bets to make it worthwhile.
What provably fair does NOT promise
This is the important part. Provably fair is a seal on the dice. It is not a rebate voucher, and it is not a guarantee about the casino as a business.
| Provably fair proves | Provably fair does not prove |
|---|---|
| The result came from the seeds committed before your bet | That the game has a small house edge |
| The casino couldn't change a round after seeing your stake | That the casino will pay your withdrawal on time |
| The formula maps seeds to results the way it says | That bonus terms are fair or clearly explained |
| Results are reproducible by anyone | That the casino is licensed where you live |
A perfectly honest provably fair game still takes its cut on every bet. Which brings us to the numbers.
The house edge is built into the payout
On a typical provably fair dice game, you choose a target and win if the roll lands under it. A 1% house edge is common on these "original" crypto games, and it is applied by paying slightly less than the true odds. Here is how a 1% edge looks:
| Roll under | Chance to win | Payout multiplier | Expected return per GH₵100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10% | 9.90× | GH₵99 |
| 25 | 25% | 3.96× | GH₵99 |
| 50 | 50% | 1.98× | GH₵99 |
| 75 | 75% | 1.32× | GH₵99 |
| 90 | 90% | 1.10× | GH₵99 |
Every row loses 1% on average. Changing the target changes how bumpy your session is, not how much you lose in the long run. Crash games work the same way. With a 1% edge, the chance the multiplier reaches 2× is 49.5%, reaches 5× is 19.8%, and reaches 10× is 9.9%. Cash out at any of them and your expected return is still 99% of what you staked.

Why a small edge still empties wallets
A 1% edge sounds harmless. The trap is speed. Provably fair games are fast: you can place hundreds of bets in a few minutes, especially with auto-bet. Expected loss is simply the total you wager times the edge, and the total you wager grows quickly:
| Total wagered | Expected loss at 1% edge | At 3% edge | At 5% edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| GH₵1,000 | GH₵10 | GH₵30 | GH₵50 |
| GH₵10,000 | GH₵100 | GH₵300 | GH₵500 |
A player with GH₵500 who bets GH₵20 a time, 500 times, has wagered GH₵10,000 even if the balance went up and down the whole way. The chance of being ahead also shrinks the longer you play. On an even-money dice bet that wins 49.5% of the time:
| Number of bets | Chance you are ahead |
|---|---|
| 10 | 36.5% |
| 50 | 41.6% |
| 100 | 42.1% |
| 500 | 39.4% |
| 1,000 | 36.4% |
(The low figure at 10 bets is because a 5–5 split counts as "not ahead".) The direction is clear: the more you play, the more the edge shows up. Provably fair can't change that, and nobody honest says otherwise.
Common myths we hear from Ghanaian players
- "I can predict the next roll from the hash." No. That is the whole point of the hash. Anyone selling a "predictor" app or Telegram bot for provably fair games is selling a scam, and some of those apps steal wallet keys.
- "Changing my client seed after a loss changes my luck." It changes which results you get, but every seed has the same odds. There is no lucky seed.
- "Martingale works because the game is fair." Doubling after each loss still hits the table limit or your balance limit eventually. A fair game makes martingale fail fairly.
- "Provably fair means the casino is regulated." It doesn't. Licensing is a separate question.
Provably fair vs normal slots and live tables
Most of the games in a big crypto casino lobby, slots from major studios and live dealer tables, are not provably fair in the seeds-and-hashes sense. Slots rely on certified RNGs and published RTP (return to player) figures; live tables rely on physical cards, wheels and cameras. That isn't automatically worse. It just means the trust comes from testing labs and the operator's licence rather than your own maths. If you want to compare game edges across a lobby, our guide to the best online casino games in Ghana walks through RTP and house edge by game type, and which slots pay the most covers RTP in detail.
Picking a crypto casino: the checks that matter more
If you are going to play at an offshore crypto casino from Ghana, provably fair is one tick box among several. These matter as much or more:
- Licence and dispute route. Who licenses the operator, and what happens if they don't pay? An offshore licence means the Gaming Commission of Ghana can't help you.
- Withdrawal track record. Read recent player reports about payout speed and ID checks. Offshore casinos may ask for verification before large withdrawals.
- Bonus terms. Wagering requirements, game weighting and maximum bet rules while a bonus is active.
- House edge per game. Published and easy to find.
- Responsible gambling tools. Deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and self-exclusion.
Our guide on depositing at a crypto casino covers wallets, networks and fees, and crypto withdrawals covers the other direction.
A cedi session plan for fast games
Because these games are fast, set limits before you start, in cedis, not coins:
| Session budget | Stake per bet (1%) | Stop-loss | Time limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| GH₵200 | GH₵2 | GH₵200 (whole budget) | 30 minutes |
| GH₵500 | GH₵5 | GH₵500 | 30 minutes |
| GH₵1,000 | GH₵10 | GH₵1,000 | 45 minutes |
- Turn off auto-bet, or set it with a hard stop on number of bets and loss.
- Never top up during the same session.
- If you are up, decide in advance how much you will lock away, and do it.
- Remember that coin prices move. A USDT balance is steadier for budgeting than BTC.
Is it legal to play provably fair games from Ghana?
Gaming in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under Act 721, and only licensed operators may offer gaming to people in Ghana. Offshore crypto casinos such as Cloudbet (Curaçao) are not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana. Our guide to legal online casinos in Ghana and our page on whether betting is legal in Ghana explain the rules in full. Remember too that the Ghana Revenue Authority treats winnings as reportable income even though Act 1129 removed the withholding tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025.
Quick checklist before you play

Questions punters ask
What does provably fair mean at a casino?
It means the casino commits to a secret server seed before you play by showing you its hash, mixes it with your client seed and a nonce to produce results, and later reveals the seed so you can check every result yourself.
Does provably fair mean I can't lose?
No. It only proves the result wasn't changed after your bet. The house edge is built into the payouts, so you still lose on average over time.
Can I predict provably fair results?
No. You can't work backwards from a SHA-256 hash to the seed. Any app or bot that claims to predict results is a scam.
What house edge do provably fair games have?
Many crypto 'original' games such as dice and crash use around 1%, but it varies by game and casino. Check the fairness or info panel.
Are slots and live dealer games provably fair?
Usually not in the seeds-and-hashes sense. Slots rely on certified RNGs and published RTP, and live games use physical equipment on camera.
Is Cloudbet licensed in Ghana?
No. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana. 18+ only.
