can you make money spread betting - outdoor football pitch

Charley, somebody in your WhatsApp group has probably posted a screenshot of a big spread betting win and said "this thing pays". Maybe it was on a football total, maybe it was on gold or the FTSE. So you search can you make money spread betting, and every result is either a broker selling you an account or a forum thread full of horror stories. Let me give you the straight version, the way I'd explain it to my own younger brother: yes, some people make money, but the structure of spread betting makes it very easy to lose more than you planned, and most people who try it end up behind. Below you'll see exactly how it works, real-looking worked examples in cedis, where the money actually goes, and when it might make sense at all.

18+ only. General information, not betting, investment or financial advice. Betting in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). The short answer

You can make money spread betting in the same way you can make money in any form of betting or trading: if your judgement is consistently better than the price you're offered, and your risk control is strict enough to survive the bad runs. The problem is that spread betting removes the safety net most punters are used to. With a normal fixed-odds slip, the most you can lose is your stake. With a spread bet, your loss grows with every point the result moves against you. A small mistake in judgement can become a big hole in your pocket.

That's why the honest answer is: possible, rare, and not a side hustle. If you want a way to earn steady money, this isn't it. If you enjoy the maths and can treat it as a strictly budgeted hobby, read on and understand every moving part first.

What spread betting actually is

A spread bet is a bet on how much something happens, not just whether it happens. The provider quotes a range, called the spread, for some measurable number: total goals in a match, total corners, a team's winning margin, or the level of a stock index at a certain time. You then decide whether the real number will finish above the range ("buy") or below it ("sell"), and you choose a stake per point.

The gap between the two ends of the spread is the provider's built-in cut. It plays the same role the margin plays in fixed odds: it's how the house gets paid whatever happens.

Sports spread betting vs financial spread betting

The phrase covers two different worlds that use the same mechanics.

FeatureSports spread bettingFinancial spread betting
What you bet onGoals, corners, points, cards, winning margins, player statsStock indices, currency pairs, commodities, single shares
When it settlesAt the end of the match or marketWhenever you close, or at a set expiry
Main home marketMostly the UK, through a small number of specialist firmsUK and Ireland mainly, offered by trading platforms
Extra costThe spread itselfThe spread, plus overnight funding charges on many positions
Big dangerUnlimited downside on high-scoring outcomesLeverage and margin calls that can wipe an account fast

For Ghanaian readers, the important thing is that neither type is a mainstream local product. The well-known spread betting firms are built for UK customers, and a platform that accepts you from Accra or Kumasi without clear local authorisation deserves extra suspicion, not less. More on that below.

A worked football example in cedis

Let's say a firm quotes total goals in a big European match at 2.6–2.9. You think it will be a goal-fest, so you buy at 2.9 for GH₵50 per goal. Here's how different results settle (all figures illustrative):

Final total goalsCalculationYour result
0(0 − 2.9) × 50−GH₵145
1(1 − 2.9) × 50−GH₵95
2(2 − 2.9) × 50−GH₵45
3(3 − 2.9) × 50+GH₵5
4(4 − 2.9) × 50+GH₵55
6(6 − 2.9) × 50+GH₵155

Notice two things. First, three goals, which feels like "you were right", only pays GH₵5, because you bought at 2.9 and the spread already ate most of the movement. Second, a goalless draw costs you GH₵145, almost three times the GH₵50 you might have thought of as your "stake". This is the core lesson: your stake per point is not your maximum loss.

The sell side is where people really get hurt

Selling looks attractive because low-scoring games are common. Suppose you sell corners in a match at 9.5–10.5, entering at 9.5 for GH₵40 per corner. A quiet game with 6 corners gives you (9.5 − 6) × 40 = +GH₵140. Lovely. But if one team chases a late equaliser and the match ends with 17 corners, you lose (17 − 9.5) × 40 = −GH₵300. Corner counts, total points in basketball and booking points can run much higher than expected when a game gets wild, and on the sell side there's no ceiling except where the number naturally stops.

Many sports firms offer stop-loss style limits or "capped" markets on certain bets. If you ever try this, check what limits are available before you place anything, and treat an uncapped sell as the most dangerous product on the menu.

A financial example: leverage in plain language

Financial spread betting adds leverage. You only put up a deposit, called margin, but your profit or loss is calculated on the full size of the position. Imagine an index quoted at 8,000–8,001 and you buy at 8,001 for the cedi equivalent of GH₵10 per point. The provider might ask you to deposit only a fraction of the full exposure as margin. If the index rises 150 points, you make about GH₵1,500. If it falls 300 points overnight on bad news, you lose about GH₵3,000, possibly far more than the margin you deposited, and the platform can close your position automatically when your account runs short. That forced close, the margin call, often happens at the worst possible moment.

On top of that, positions held overnight usually carry a daily funding charge. It looks tiny each day, but over weeks it quietly drains a position that's going nowhere.

So who actually makes money?

Look at the structure and the answer becomes clear:

  1. The provider, every time, through the spread and funding charges. It doesn't need you to lose; it needs you to keep trading.
  2. A small group of disciplined players who specialise in a narrow market, keep detailed records, size stakes tiny relative to their bank, and walk away from bets they can't price better than the firm.
  3. Lucky players over a short period. Luck is real, but it's not a plan, and a single bad result can hand it all back.

Regulated financial spread betting and CFD providers in the UK and EU are required to warn customers what share of retail accounts lose money with them, and those published figures are typically well over half. Check the warning on any provider's own site; it's usually in the footer or on the sign-up page. When the companies selling the product admit most customers lose, take that seriously.

Spread betting vs fixed odds: same idea, different risk

Many spread markets have a fixed-odds cousin. Total goals spreads resemble over/under lines. Supremacy spreads resemble Asian handicaps. The difference is the payout shape.

QuestionFixed-odds over/under or handicapSpread bet
Maximum lossYour stakeDepends on the final number; can be several times your stake per point
Maximum winStake × (odds − 1)Grows with how far the number moves your way
Best forControlled budgets, beginnersExperienced players with strict limits

If what attracts you is the idea of betting on "how many" rather than "who wins", fixed-odds totals and handicaps give you most of that interest with a capped downside. Our guide to what under 2.5 means in betting covers the goal-line basics, and the odds calculator lets you see the margin baked into any line.

How to judge a spread before you touch it

If you still want to understand spreads properly, practise on paper first. For any market:

  1. Write down your own estimate of the final number before you look at the quote. For goals, base it on each team's recent scoring and conceding, not on your favourite club.
  2. Compare with the spread. If your estimate sits inside the range, there's no bet. You need a gap larger than the spread to even think about it.
  3. Work out the bad case. What's a realistic extreme for this market? Multiply the distance from your entry by your stake per point. If that number would hurt, the stake is too big.
  4. Record the result as if you had bet. Do this for at least a few dozen markets. If your paper record isn't positive after the spread, real money won't change that.

Bankroll rules if you ever try it

Is spread betting legal for Ghanaians?

Gambling in Ghana is licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, and investment products fall under the financial regulators. The big spread betting firms are authorised for their home markets, not for Ghana, and many simply won't open accounts for Ghanaian residents. If an unfamiliar website or Telegram "account manager" offers you leveraged spread betting from Ghana, be very careful: that's a common setup for scams where you can deposit easily but can never withdraw. Check who regulates the company, where it's registered, and whether it accepts your country in its own terms, before sending anything. For the betting side of local law, see our guide to whether betting is legal in Ghana.

Tax and records

In Ghana, the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings was removed from 2 April 2025, but income rules still matter if betting or trading becomes a regular income source. Our Ghana betting tax guide explains what changed. Whatever you do, keep a simple record of every deposit, withdrawal and result. It's the only honest way to know whether you're actually making money.

Common myths about spread betting

Safer ways to get the same buzz

If you like the "how many" style of thinking, the lower-risk route is fixed-odds totals, handicaps and player stat lines, where the stake is the most you can lose. A crypto sportsbook like Cloudbet lists goal lines, Asian handicaps and totals across football, basketball and more. It's still gambling with a house margin, so the same rule applies: small stakes, a fixed budget, and no chasing. If you're specifically interested in betting where the payout depends on a price moving, read our guide to betting on crypto price to see how those markets differ.

My take

Can you make money spread betting? A few people do. Most don't, and the ones who lose often lose more than they expected because the downside isn't capped. If you're curious, learn it on paper, start tiny, and use every limit available. If what you really want is extra income, put that energy into your work or a proper savings plan instead. Bet for fun, never for rent, and if it stops being fun, call the free helplines above.
