Updated October 2026 · By the BetGhanaHub team

how to bet on ufc - MMA cage

Ghana has a proud fighting tradition, and many Ghanaians who grew up on boxing now follow mixed martial arts too. The UFC, the biggest MMA organisation in the world, puts on events most weekends, and sportsbooks offer dozens of markets on every fight. If you want to learn how to bet on UFC properly, my brother, this guide covers it from the ground up: the rules, the markets, the factors that decide fights and the habits that keep your money safe.

UFC basics every bettor should know

Rounds

Standard UFC fights are three rounds of five minutes. Main events and championship fights are scheduled for five rounds of five minutes. That difference matters a lot for round-based markets and totals.

Ways to win

Scoring

Judges use the 10-point must system: the winner of each round usually gets 10 points and the loser 9, or fewer for a dominant round. Judges weigh effective striking and grappling first, then effective aggressiveness and fighting area control. Close rounds can go either way, which makes decisions unpredictable.

Weight classes

Fighters compete in divisions from flyweight up to heavyweight, with women's divisions too. Lighter divisions often see faster pace and more decisions; heavier divisions see more knockouts, because heavier fighters hit harder. These are tendencies, not rules.

Event times in Ghana

Ghana uses GMT all year. Many UFC events are held in the United States, typically on Saturday nights US time. Main cards often begin around 10pm US Eastern Time, which is about 3am in Ghana during US standard time and 2am during US daylight time. Preliminary cards start a couple of hours earlier. Events in Europe, the Middle East or Asia can be much more convenient for Ghanaian fans, sometimes in the afternoon or evening. Always check the event schedule and convert carefully.

Because main cards often fall in the early hours, most Ghanaian bettors place pre-fight bets on Saturday evening, then check results on Sunday morning.

The main UFC betting markets

Moneyline (fight winner)

Bet on which fighter wins, by any method. Prices may appear in American odds, such as -200 or +170, or decimal odds, such as 1.50 or 2.70. Switch to decimal if you find it easier. Check how the site handles a draw or no contest: some void moneyline bets in that case, others offer a separate draw option.

Method of victory

Bet on how a fighter wins: KO/TKO, submission or decision. Higher prices than the moneyline, because you need both the winner and the method right.

Round betting

Bet on a fighter to win in a specific round, such as Fighter A to win in Round 2. High prices, low hit rates.

Total rounds (over/under)

Bet on whether the fight lasts beyond a certain point, such as over or under 2.5 rounds. In a three-round fight, over 2.5 rounds wins if the fight passes the halfway point of round three, at 2 minutes 30 seconds. Check your site's definition; this halfway rule is standard but always worth confirming.

Fight goes the distance

Yes or no: will the fight reach the judges' scorecards?

Specials and props

Markets like "fight to end by submission", "fighter to be knocked down", "first takedown" or "point deduction". Fun, but margins are often high.

Parlays

Combining several fighters or outcomes. Common on UFC cards, but every leg multiplies risk, and upsets are frequent in MMA.

What decides UFC fights: the factors to study

Styles make fights

MMA combines striking (punches, kicks, knees, elbows) and grappling (wrestling, takedowns, submissions). Every fighter has strengths and weaknesses. A powerful wrestler can neutralise a striker by taking them down; a striker with strong takedown defence can keep the fight standing and win on the feet. Ask: where will this fight be fought, standing or on the ground, and who controls that?

Reach, height and stance

Longer reach can help a fighter control distance. Southpaw and orthodox stances create different angles. These matter, but they're less important than skill and style.

Cardio and five-round experience

Some fighters fade after the first round; others get stronger. In five-round fights, cardio and experience at that length become critical.

Durability and recent knockouts

Fighters who have been knocked out several times may become more vulnerable. Equally, a fighter with a strong chin may survive danger that would finish others.

Age and activity

Older fighters can decline quickly, especially in lighter divisions where speed is vital. Long layoffs can mean ring rust, while very frequent fights may cause wear.

Weight cutting and weigh-ins

Most fighters cut weight before the official weigh-in, usually the day before the fight. A difficult weight cut, a missed weight or a fighter looking drained at weigh-ins can affect performance. Watch weigh-in news before betting.

Short-notice replacements

Fighters stepping in on short notice may not have had a full camp, but they also face opponents who prepared for someone else. Bookmakers adjust prices, but these fights can be unpredictable.

Camp and coaching

Changes in training camp, coaches or training partners can affect a fighter's development and game plan.

Judging tendencies

Close fights that go to decision are hard to predict, and judging can be inconsistent. Fighters who win rounds clearly are safer decision bets than those who rely on close exchanges.

Researching a UFC bet step by step

  1. Watch recent fights of both fighters, not just highlights. Highlights show the best moments, not the full picture.
  2. Compare styles: striker vs wrestler, pressure fighter vs counter-striker, submission specialist vs strong scrambler.
  3. Look at the numbers from official UFC statistics, such as significant strikes landed and absorbed per minute, takedown accuracy and defence, and submission attempts. Use them as context, not gospel.
  4. Check fight-week news: weigh-ins, injuries, late changes and short-notice replacements.
  5. Estimate a probability for the outcome you like, and compare it with the bookmaker's implied probability (1 divided by the decimal odds).
  6. Choose the market that best fits your view: moneyline, method, rounds or distance.
  7. Compare prices on two or three sites.

A worked example (illustrative numbers)

A three-round fight between a powerful wrestler and a dangerous striker. The wrestler is 1.65 to win, implied about 61%. The striker is 2.30. You've watched both fighters: the striker has weak takedown defence and has been controlled on the ground before, but hits hard early. You think the wrestler wins about 63% of the time, which suggests a small edge, but you're not confident enough for a straight bet. You notice "fight goes the distance: yes" at 1.90, implied about 53%. Your reasoning: if the wrestler wins, it's most likely by grinding control over three rounds; if the striker wins, it's likely an early knockout, which you think is less likely. You estimate "goes the distance" at around 58% and stake one flat unit of GH₵10 on it. You check weigh-in news first: both fighters made weight comfortably. Whatever happens, you record the bet and your reasoning.

Understanding UFC odds

Sportsbooks often show UFC prices in American odds. A quick guide:

AmericanDecimalImplied chance
-3001.3375%
-2001.5066.7%
-1501.6760%
+1002.0050%
+1502.5040%
+3004.0025%

In a two-fighter market, the implied chances of both sides usually add up to slightly more than 100%. The excess is the bookmaker's margin.

Live betting on UFC fights

Live UFC betting lets you bet between rounds and sometimes during them. Prices move dramatically after knockdowns, takedowns or dominant rounds. Between rounds is often the calmest time to bet: you've seen how the first round went, and markets usually reopen briefly. But remember that streams can run behind live data, and fights can change in a single punch. If you bet live, plan the situation in advance, for example "if the wrestler takes the striker down repeatedly in round one, I'll consider backing the wrestler by decision", and keep stakes small.

Settlement rules to know

Fight week: a timeline for bettors

Many careful bettors place most of their bets after weigh-ins, accepting that some value may disappear, in exchange for knowing both fighters made weight and the bout is going ahead.

Reading fighter statistics

Official UFC statistics include significant strikes landed per minute, significant strikes absorbed per minute, striking accuracy and defence, takedowns per 15 minutes, takedown accuracy and defence, and submission attempts. These numbers are useful, but they need context. A fighter's stats are shaped by the opponents they've faced. Strong striking defence against weak strikers may not hold up against an elite one. Takedown defence numbers from a few fights may be based on very small samples. Use statistics to ask questions, then watch fights to answer them.

Underdogs in MMA

MMA produces upsets regularly, because fights can end suddenly and styles can neutralise apparent advantages. That doesn't mean all underdogs are value; many are underdogs for good reasons. Underdogs can be interesting when they have a specific path to victory the market may be underrating, such as a strong wrestler facing a striker with weak takedown defence, or a durable veteran facing a young fighter who fades after round one. Bet underdogs with small stakes and expect losing runs.

Judges and decisions

Close decisions are among the hardest outcomes to predict in MMA. Judges score each round separately, and a fighter who wins two close rounds can win a decision even if their opponent did more damage in one dominant round. Fighters who rely on volume and pressure tend to impress judges in close rounds; fighters who wait for big moments can lose rounds without much happening. If you bet on decisions, think about how each round is likely to look to a judge, not just who you think is the better fighter overall.

Keep a fight notebook

Serious MMA bettors keep notes on fighters: strengths, weaknesses, cardio, how they react to pressure, how they performed against different styles, and weight-cut issues. Combined with a record of your bets, prices and closing lines, a notebook helps you learn from both wins and losses. Over time, you'll spot which divisions, styles and markets you read well, and which you should avoid.

Women's MMA

The UFC has several women's divisions, and they're well covered by sportsbooks. Women's fights historically go to decision more often than many men's divisions, though that varies by division and fighter. As always, study styles and records rather than relying on general patterns. Women's divisions can also be less heavily bet, which sometimes leaves prices less efficient for informed fans.

Grappling explained for striking fans

Many Ghanaian fans come to MMA from boxing and understand striking well, but grappling can be harder to read. Some basics help:

When you assess a fight, ask whether the striker can stop takedowns, and whether the grappler can get the fight down safely without eating heavy shots on the way in.

Late-night betting and your health

With main cards often in the early hours in Ghana, think about how UFC betting fits into your life. Staying up until 4am every few weeks can affect work, studies and family time. Many fans place pre-fight bets in the evening, sleep, and watch replays later. If you watch live, set your bets before the main card starts and avoid in-play betting while tired. Your judgement at 3am is rarely your best.

MMA terms glossary

Choosing between moneyline, method and distance

A common question is which market best expresses your view. Some guidelines:

Matching the market to your actual opinion, rather than chasing the biggest price, is one of the simplest ways to bet more intelligently.

Promotions on fight nights

Sportsbooks often run UFC promotions: boosted odds on headline fights, parlay boosts or refunds if a specific fight ends a certain way. Read the terms carefully. Boosts are usually on popular fighters and may still be short of true value. Refunds are often paid as bonus funds with wagering conditions. Use promotions only on bets you would have made anyway.

A sample fight-night plan

  1. Thursday: shortlist three fights you know well.
  2. Friday after weigh-ins: confirm both fighters made weight and nothing has changed.
  3. Saturday evening: compare prices on two sites, place two or three flat-stake bets, and note them.
  4. Go to bed, or watch without adding live bets while tired.
  5. Sunday: record results, closing prices and lessons learned.

This routine keeps fight night fun and your betting under control, and it leaves you with honest notes you can learn from before the next event on the calendar.

Line movement in fight week

UFC prices often move noticeably between when lines open and fight night. Early lines can be set before much money has come in, and news about injuries, camp changes or weight cuts can shift them. Sharp bettors sometimes bet early when they disagree with an opening line; casual money often arrives late on popular fighters. If you consistently get better prices than the closing line, that's a good sign your analysis is adding value. If your fighters keep drifting after you bet, the market disagrees with you, and it's worth reviewing your approach. Recording both your price and the closing price for every bet is the easiest way to track this.

Be careful with very large late moves. Sometimes they reflect genuine news, such as an injury rumour, and sometimes they're simply heavy public money on a famous name. Try to understand why a price moved before reacting to it, and never chase a moving line with a bigger stake.

Staking for MMA

MMA is volatile. Favourites lose often, sometimes to a single punch or a quick submission. Your staking should reflect that:

Common UFC betting mistakes

UFC vs boxing betting

If you're used to boxing betting, a few differences stand out. MMA has more ways to win, including submissions, and more ways for a fight to change quickly. Boxing fights are typically longer, with more rounds, and decisions are more common in many weight classes. Draws are rarer in UFC. Boxing judging and scoring are also different. Knowledge transfers in some areas, such as striking analysis and judging tendencies, but MMA requires understanding grappling too.

Where to bet on UFC from Ghana

Some Ghana-licensed operators, regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721), offer UFC markets with cedi stakes and mobile money. Coverage may focus on main events. Offshore crypto sportsbooks such as Cloudbet, licensed in Curaçao and not in Ghana, typically offer full cards with many markets, including method, rounds and props, but there's no Ghanaian regulator if something goes wrong. Cloudbet says withdrawals are typically processed within 24 hours, and its terms apply identity checks once cumulative deposits reach US$2,200.

Since 2 April 2025, Ghana's 10% withholding tax on betting winnings has been abolished, so licensed operators no longer deduct it.

Bet responsibly

Fight nights are exciting, often late and full of emotion. That combination can lead to impulsive bets. Set a budget before the event, stick to flat stakes and go to sleep instead of chasing at 3am. If betting causes stress, call the Mental Health Authority's free line on 0800 678 678, or the Gaming Commission of Ghana on 0800 454 545 about self-exclusion. Questions punters ask

How do you bet on UFC?

Choose a fight, decide on a market such as the moneyline, method of victory, total rounds or fight going the distance, compare prices, and stake a small flat amount.

What does over 2.5 rounds mean in UFC betting?

In a three-round fight, over 2.5 rounds usually wins if the fight passes 2 minutes 30 seconds of round three.

What happens to my bet if a UFC fight is cancelled?

Bets are usually voided. Many sites also void bets if one fighter is replaced. Check the site's rules.

What time are UFC main cards in Ghana?

Events in the US often start main cards around 10pm Eastern, about 3am in Ghana during US standard time and 2am during US daylight time.

Are UFC favourites safe bets?

No. Upsets are common in MMA, and short prices on favourites offer poor reward for the risk.
