how to bet on world cup winner - football stadium panorama

Chale, betting on the World Cup winner is the simplest bet in football to understand and one of the hardest to price well. You pick one country to lift the trophy. If they do, you get paid. If anyone else does, you lose. That is it. But how you choose the price, when you place it, and how much money you lock away for how long make all the difference.

18+ only. General information, not a tip, and all odds below are made-up examples to show the maths, not live prices. Cloudbet, the crypto sportsbook we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana (Gaming Act 2006, Act 721). If you want funding and coin logistics for a whole tournament, our sister page on World Cup betting with crypto covers that; this page stays on the winner market itself.

What the “World Cup winner” market actually is

Bookmakers call it the outright or tournament winner market. It lists every team that can still win — sometimes dozens of countries before qualifying even finishes — each with its own price. You back one team. The bet settles once, after the final.

The key settlement point: the outright pays on the team that lifts the trophy. Extra time and penalty shootouts in the final count, because the question is “who wins the tournament,” not “who wins in 90 minutes.” That is different from a normal match result bet, which usually settles on 90 minutes only. Mixing up those two is a classic mistake when people try to hedge later.

Read the ante-post rules before you bet early

When you bet long before the tournament, you are making an ante-post bet. On most books the rule is harsh but clear: if your team fails to qualify, your bet loses — no refund. The bet is not void just because your team never reached the finals. Some books also say the bet stands even if the tournament format changes or matches move venues.

So before you place an early bet, check three things in the rules:

How to turn outright odds into real chances

Every decimal price hides an implied probability: 1 ÷ odds. A team at 6.00 has an implied chance of about 16.7%. A team at 51.00 is about 2%.

Here is the catch. Add up the implied chances of every team in an outright market and you will usually get well over 100% — often 115% to 130% or more. That extra is the bookmaker's margin, and on outrights it is usually much fatter than on a single match.

To estimate the market's “true” view, divide each implied chance by the total. Example with an imaginary market whose implied chances add up to 125%:

Team (example)Book oddsImplied chanceMargin-free chance (÷ 1.25)Margin-free odds
Team A5.5018.2%14.5%about 6.9
Team B7.0014.3%11.4%about 8.8
Team C10.0010.0%8.0%about 12.5
Team D34.002.9%2.4%about 42
Team E101.001.0%0.8%about 126

This simple division assumes the margin is spread evenly. In reality, books often load more margin onto long shots, because casual punters love big numbers. That is called the favourite–longshot bias: long shots tend to be worse value than favourites, on average. It does not mean favourites are always value. It means a team at 150.00 is often “really” more like 250.00.

Compare prices — it matters more here than anywhere

Because outright margins are big and the bets run for weeks or years, small price differences add up. One book might offer Team B at 7.00 and another at 8.50. That is a 21% bigger payout for the same opinion. Always check two or three books, and look at betting exchanges' prices too if you have access, because exchanges often show a market price with less margin built in.

When to bet: three windows

Timing changes both the price and how long your money is stuck.

WindowUpsideDownside
Years early (during qualifying)Prices can be long before squads, coaches and form are clearTeam may not qualify (bet loses); money tied up for a long time; big margins
After the group drawYou know the path — easy or brutal group, likely knockout opponentsThe market reacts to the draw quickly; obvious value disappears
During the tournamentYou see real form, injuries, and who is freshFavourites are shorter; fewer teams left to choose from

There is no single right window. Early bets reward people who read squad development and coaching changes well. Post-draw bets reward people who understand bracket paths. In-tournament bets reward people who watch matches properly instead of just reading scores.

The cost of waiting money

If you put GH₵500 on a team two years before the final, that money earns nothing and you cannot use it for anything else. If you hold the stake in crypto, its value can rise or fall a lot over that time. Many punters keep long-term bets small for this reason alone. A useful rule: never lock away money in an outright that you might need before the final.

Reading the bracket path

Once the draw is made, a team's chance depends not only on how strong it is but on who it has to beat. Two equally good teams can have very different chances if one lands in a soft side of the bracket. Ask yourself:

A team's outright price should move with that path. If the market hasn't fully adjusted, that is where an edge can sit.

Dutching: backing more than one team

You do not have to pick only one country. Dutching means splitting your stake across several teams so you get the same return whichever of them wins. The trick is to stake each team in proportion to its implied chance.

Example: you like three teams at 6.00, 7.00 and 9.00, with a total budget of GH₵100.

The combined price is roughly 2.38, which is the same as saying the three together have about a 42% implied chance. Dutching does not create value from nothing; it just bundles your opinion. It only pays over time if the bundled chance you believe in is bigger than 42%.

Hedging later — do it in the right market

Suppose you backed a team at 21.00 with GH₵50 long ago and they reach the final. If they win the trophy you collect GH₵1,050. Their final opponent is now priced at 2.20 to lift the trophy. To lock in profit either way, you can back the opponent:

The important detail: hedge using a “to lift the trophy” or “to win the final, including extra time and penalties” market. If you hedge using a normal 90-minute match result, a draw after 90 minutes leaves you exposed. Whether you hedge at all is personal — it trades a bigger possible win for a guaranteed smaller one.

Related markets worth knowing

These markets often have different margins from the main winner market, so compare them on their own merits.

Supporting the Black Stars without fooling yourself

Every Ghanaian wants to see the Black Stars go deep, and betting on your own team at long odds is a fun way to follow a tournament. Just keep two jars in your head: the fan jar and the value jar. A small fan stake on Ghana is entertainment, priced like a cinema ticket. A value bet is one where your honest estimate beats the price. National feeling pushes many people to over-bet their own team, and some books know it. If you want an African angle with better odds logic, look at the winning-confederation or stage-of-elimination markets and price them coolly.

Common mistakes on the winner market

  1. Betting on hype. A team that won a friendly 4–0 is not suddenly a contender.
  2. Ignoring the margin. Outright books can hold 20% or more. If you do not compare prices, you are paying that every time.
  3. Forgetting the qualification rule. Ante-post bets on teams that fail to qualify usually lose.
  4. Hedging in the wrong market. Use trophy-winner markets, not 90-minute match results.
  5. Locking away money you need. Outrights can sit for months or years. Only stake what you can forget about.
  6. Chasing with more outrights. Adding new long-shot tickets every time your team loses a warm-up is a slow leak.

A simple plan you can copy

  1. Decide a total outright budget for the whole tournament, and keep it small compared with your normal betting.
  2. Make your own top-ten list with rough chances (they should add up to less than 100%, leaving room for everyone else).
  3. Strip the margin from the books' prices and compare with your list.
  4. Back only teams where your chance is clearly higher than the margin-free market chance.
  5. Consider dutching if you like two or three teams equally.
  6. Write down every bet with date, price and reason. Review after the tournament.
  7. Decide in advance whether you will hedge if a team reaches the semi-final or final, so you are not deciding in a panic.

Funding and withdrawing

If you use a crypto book, consider keeping the stake in a stablecoin such as USDT so the value does not swing for months. Check the deposit and withdrawal steps and fees before the tournament starts, not on the night of the final. Our guides on betting on sports with crypto and crypto withdrawals cover the basics. Quick FAQ

Do penalties in the final count for the winner market? Yes. The outright pays on whoever lifts the trophy.

If my team doesn't qualify, do I get my money back? Usually not. Ante-post outright bets typically lose if the team fails to qualify. Read the rules first.

Is it better to bet early or late? Neither is always better. Early can give longer prices but more risk and longer waits; later gives more information at shorter prices.

Can I cash out a winner bet? Many books offer cash out on outrights. It usually includes extra margin, so compare the offer with a manual hedge.

Why do long shots look so tempting? Because the potential payout is huge, and bookmakers price them knowing that. Long shots usually carry more of the margin.

My take

Betting on the World Cup winner is fun, and it gives you a reason to follow every match. The skill is in the boring parts: reading the rules on qualification, stripping the margin out of the prices, shopping for the best number, thinking about the bracket path, and keeping stakes small enough that a long wait doesn't hurt. Back the Black Stars with your heart if you want — just keep that ticket small — and save your real stakes for prices where your head says the number is wrong. Enjoy the tournament.
