Poker is different from almost every other game in a casino, my brother. At a proper poker table you are not playing against the house, you are playing against the other people sitting there, and the site just takes a small fee from each pot. That means skill genuinely matters. It also means that a lot of what gets sold as "crypto poker" is actually something else: house-banked games that look like poker but work like any other casino game. This guide shows you how to tell them apart, gives you the basic maths every Hold'em player needs, explains rake and bankroll in cedis, and covers the crypto and safety side honestly.
18+ only. Any gambling can lose you money, and most poker players lose over time once fees are counted. Gaming in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet, the crypto casino we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.

Two very different things called "poker"
Before you deposit anything, figure out which kind of poker a site actually offers. Many crypto sites list "poker" in the menu, and it can mean either of these:
| Player-vs-player poker (a "poker room") | House-banked casino poker | |
|---|---|---|
| Who you play against | Other players | The casino |
| How the site earns | Rake: a small cut of each pot, or a tournament fee | House edge built into the payouts |
| Can skill beat it long term? | Yes, for a small minority of strong players | No. Good strategy only reduces the edge |
| Examples | Texas Hold'em cash tables, sit & go's, tournaments | Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker, Caribbean Stud, video poker |
| Speed | Depends on the table | Usually fast, set by the dealer or machine |
Neither one is "fake". They are just different products. At many crypto casinos, Cloudbet included, check the lobby carefully: if the poker games sit in the live casino or table games section with a dealer and a paytable, you are playing house-banked poker, and everything in the casino-edge part of this page applies.
Texas Hold'em in two minutes
Most player-vs-player poker online is No-Limit Texas Hold'em. The basics:
- Each player gets two private cards. Five shared cards come out in three stages: the flop (three cards), the turn (one) and the river (one).
- There are four betting rounds: before the flop, after the flop, after the turn and after the river.
- Two players post forced bets before the cards are dealt: the small blind and the big blind. The "button" marks the dealer position and moves round the table each hand.
- Your best five-card hand from your two cards and the five shared cards wins at showdown, unless everyone else folds first.
Position matters a lot. Players who act later in a betting round (near the button) see what everyone else does before deciding. That information is worth real money over thousands of hands, which is why good players play more hands from late position and fewer from early position.
Outs and the rule of 2 and 4
An "out" is a card that will improve your hand to what you think is the best hand. Counting outs and turning them into a percentage is the first real skill in Hold'em. With 47 unseen cards after the flop (you can see your two and the three on the board), here are the exact chances:
| Outs | Typical situation | Hit by the river (from the flop) | Rule of 4 | Hit on the river only | Rule of 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Gutshot straight draw | 16.5% | 16% | 8.7% | 8% |
| 8 | Open-ended straight draw | 31.5% | 32% | 17.4% | 16% |
| 9 | Flush draw | 35.0% | 36% | 19.6% | 18% |
| 12 | Flush draw plus overcards | 45.0% | 48% | 26.1% | 24% |
| 15 | Flush draw plus straight draw | 54.1% | 60% | 32.6% | 30% |
The shortcut: multiply your outs by 4 on the flop (two cards to come) or by 2 on the turn (one card to come). It is close for small numbers of outs and a little generous for big draws, so knock a few points off when you have 12 or more outs.
Pot odds: is the call worth it?
Pot odds compare what you have to call with what you can win. The question is simple: how often do I need to win for this call to break even? Work it out as your call divided by the total pot after you call.
| Pot before the bet | Opponent bets | You must call | You need to win at least |
|---|---|---|---|
| GH₵100 | GH₵33 (one-third pot) | GH₵33 | 19.9% |
| GH₵100 | GH₵50 (half pot) | GH₵50 | 25.0% |
| GH₵200 | GH₵150 (three-quarter pot) | GH₵150 | 30.0% |
| GH₵100 | GH₵100 (full pot) | GH₵100 | 33.3% |
Put the two tables together. You have a flush draw on the turn, so about 19.6% to hit on the river. Facing a half-pot bet you need 25%. That's a fold on pure pot odds, unless you expect to win extra money on the river when you do hit (called "implied odds"). Facing a one-third pot bet you need 19.9%, so it is close to break-even. This kind of calculation, done quickly and honestly, is the backbone of decent poker.
Rake: the fee that decides who actually wins
In a poker room the site takes rake from each pot, often a percentage with a cap per hand, or a fee on each tournament entry. It looks tiny. Over hours it is the single biggest reason most players lose.
| Pot size | Rake at 5% (example) |
|---|---|
| GH₵20 | GH₵1 |
| GH₵50 | GH₵2.50 |
| GH₵100 | GH₵5 |
| GH₵200 | GH₵10 |
Now a rough hourly picture for a made-up six-player table: 60 hands an hour, 40% of hands reaching a raked pot, an average raked pot of GH₵60 and 5% rake. That is about GH₵72 an hour leaving the table, roughly GH₵12 per player per hour. A player who is break-even before rake is losing GH₵12 an hour after it. To actually make money you must be clearly better than the table, not just a little better. That's why rakeback deals and rake caps are worth reading about before you choose where to play.
House-banked poker: know the edge
If the site's "poker" is a casino game, you can't outplay the house. What you can do is avoid the worst options and play correct strategy. Commonly quoted figures for standard rules and paytables:
| Game | Typical house edge or RTP | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Video poker, Jacks or Better (9/6 full pay) | About 99.5% RTP with perfect strategy | 9 for a full house, 6 for a flush |
| Video poker, Jacks or Better (8/5) | About 97.3% RTP | Same game, worse paytable |
| Video poker, Jacks or Better (6/5) | About 95.0% RTP | Avoid |
| Casino Hold'em | About 2.2% of the ante | Side bets usually much worse |
| Three Card Poker (ante/play) | About 3.4% of the ante | Pair Plus edge depends on its paytable |
The lesson with video poker especially: the same game with a slightly worse paytable costs you several times as much. Always look at the full house and flush payouts first. And check RTP figures in the game's own info panel, because each studio sets its own.
Bankroll rules in cedis
Poker swings are bigger than most people expect. Even a winning player can lose for weeks. The standard approach is to measure your bankroll in "buy-ins" for the level you play:
| Poker bankroll | Max buy-in at 30 buy-ins (aggressive) | Max buy-in at 50 buy-ins (safer) |
|---|---|---|
| GH₵1,000 | about GH₵33 | GH₵20 |
| GH₵2,000 | about GH₵67 | GH₵40 |
| GH₵5,000 | about GH₵167 | GH₵100 |
- Keep your poker money separate from your rent, school fees and family money. Always.
- Move down a level after losing a set number of buy-ins, for example five. Don't move up to "win it back".
- Tournaments swing even harder than cash games. Use a bigger cushion, often 100 entries or more.
- Track every session: date, game, buy-in, result, hours. Without records you will remember the wins and forget the losses.

The crypto side: fees, volatility and stablecoins
Crypto makes it easy to move money to an offshore poker or casino site, but it brings its own costs:
- Volatility. If you hold BTC or ETH in your account, your bankroll in cedis moves even when you don't play. Many players prefer a stablecoin like USDT so a GH₵1,000 bankroll stays about GH₵1,000.
- Network fees. Every deposit and withdrawal has a network fee, and it differs by coin and network. Sending USDT on the wrong network can lose the funds entirely.
- Exchange spreads. Buying crypto with mobile money or a bank transfer through an exchange or peer-to-peer market has a spread. Count it as part of the cost of playing.
- ID checks. Offshore sites may still ask for verification, especially before larger withdrawals.

Staying safe at online poker tables
- Bots and collusion. In player-vs-player poker, the biggest risks are software bots and players working together. Choose sites that say how they detect and punish this, and that refund victims.
- Table selection. Your results depend on who you sit with. Leaving a table full of strong regulars is a skill, not cowardice.
- Telegram "poker clubs". Private apps and clubs run by strangers on social media are a common scam route in West Africa. If there is no company, no licence and no dispute process, your money is not safe.
- "Poker training" schemes. Be wary of anyone who wants an upfront fee to "stake" you or teach you a guaranteed system.
- Account security. Use a unique password and two-factor authentication. Never share wallet seed phrases with anyone.
A simple learning path
- Learn hand rankings and the order of betting until they are automatic.
- Play a tight starting-hand range, more from late position, fewer from early position.
- Practise outs and pot odds until you can do them in your head in a few seconds.
- Play the lowest stakes available, and keep records for at least a few thousand hands before deciding whether you are any good.
- Review your biggest losing hands. Most of them will be calls you knew were bad at the time.
