crypto betting companies - judge gavel

My brother, a betting website is just a shop window. Behind every crypto sportsbook there's a company (sometimes a chain of companies) that holds your coins, sets the rules and decides whether you get paid. Most punters never look past the logo. This page shows you how to look at the business itself: who owns it, which licence it really holds, which country's courts would hear a dispute, and how it treats your money. Ten minutes of homework here saves a lot of crying later.

18+ only. This is general information, not legal or financial advice. In Ghana, betting is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet, the crypto sportsbook we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, so Ghanaian complaint routes don't cover it. Brand, operator, licence holder: three different things

When you read a site's footer you often see three names that don't match. That's normal, but you should know what each one means.

Name you seeWhat it usually isWhy you care
The brandThe name on the website and in the adsBrands can be sold, renamed or copied by fake sites
The operating companyThe legal entity that signs the contract with you in the termsThis is who owes you money if a withdrawal is refused
The licence holderThe entity named on the regulator's registerShould match the operating company, or the terms should explain the link
Payment or service companiesSeparate firms that process payments or run supportNormal, but your contract is still with the operator

The quick test: open the terms and conditions, find the paragraph that says "these terms are an agreement between you and ..." and write that name down. Then look for the same name on the licence register. If the two don't connect and nobody explains why, treat that as a warning.

What kinds of crypto betting companies exist?

"Crypto betting company" covers several very different businesses. Knowing which type you're dealing with tells you what can go wrong.

The last point matters a lot in Ghana. If someone says "send me your USDT and I'll place it for you on a crypto site," you're no longer dealing with a betting company at all. You're trusting a stranger with no licence and no contract. Don't.

The licence check, step by step

  1. Find the licence claim. It's normally in the footer: licence number, regulator name, sometimes a clickable seal.
  2. Click through or search the regulator's own register. A seal that's only a picture, or that links to a page on the casino's own domain, proves nothing.
  3. Match the names. The entity on the register should match the one in the terms.
  4. Check the status. Active, suspended, expired. Registers show this; screenshots in a review don't.
  5. Check where it lets you play. Read the restricted-countries list in the terms. If your country is on it, stop there; using a site that says it doesn't serve you is a fast way to lose a balance.
  6. Remember what an offshore licence does not do. It doesn't make the company licensed in Ghana, and the Gaming Commission can't take your complaint against it.

For the Ghana side of this, see our guide to the betting licence in Ghana and the list of registered betting companies in Ghana.

Governing law: which courts would hear your case?

Almost every terms page has a clause like "these terms are governed by the laws of X and disputes go to the courts of X." For offshore crypto operators, X is usually the licensing island or a related jurisdiction. In plain words: if a dispute ever reached court, you'd be dealing with a foreign legal system, far from Accra or Kumasi, probably in a different language of law. Realistically, most punters never go that far. Your practical options are the operator's own complaints process and whatever dispute route the licensing regulator offers. Read both before you deposit, not after a problem.

Money handling: the questions that separate solid companies from shaky ones

A crypto betting company is, in practice, holding customer money. These are the things worth checking about how it does that.

QuestionGood signWarning sign
Are withdrawal times and minimums published?Clear help-centre article per coin"Contact support to find out"
Are network fees shown before you confirm?Fee shown on the withdrawal screenSurprise deductions after the fact
When does identity verification kick in?Threshold or trigger stated in the termsVerification only "when we decide," usually at withdrawal
Which coins and networks are supported?Specific list with networks namedVague "all major cryptos"
What happens to dormant or closed accounts?Rule written in the termsNothing written at all
Bonus money vs real moneySeparate balances, clear rulesMixed balances with hidden lock-ups

As a worked example of what "published" looks like: Cloudbet's own help centre says the minimum withdrawal varies by coin, shows the network fee, and says withdrawals are typically processed within 24 hours. Its terms set an identity-check trigger: once your cumulative deposits reach about US$2,200, it asks for verification documents (ID, proof of address and a face check) to lift the limits. You may like or dislike those rules, but they're written down where you can read them. That's the standard to expect.

Track record: how long and how clean?

Age isn't everything, but it helps. A company that has paid customers through several bull and bear markets has at least shown it can survive price crashes without freezing withdrawals. Things worth checking:

Clone sites: the company may not even be the company

Crypto makes clone sites attractive to scammers, because a deposit sent to the wrong address is gone forever. Protect yourself:

How crypto betting companies make money (and why it matters to you)

A bookmaker builds a margin into its odds. If a football match is priced 2.10 / 3.30 / 3.60, the implied chances add up to about 105.7%, and that extra 5.7% is roughly the house's slice before results go either way (illustrative prices). Casino games carry a fixed house edge. On top of that, crypto companies may earn something on coin conversions if you deposit in one coin and play in another.

This matters because a company with a clear, steady margin has less reason to play games with withdrawals. Be wary of anyone offering "guaranteed" profits, "fixed matches" or returns that sound like an investment scheme. A betting company that promises you'll win is not a betting company. Our page on crypto betting odds explains margins in more detail, and the odds calculator does the sums for you.

Locally licensed vs offshore crypto: the honest trade-off

Gaming Commission-licensed operatorOffshore crypto operator
Licence in GhanaYesNo
Local complaint routeGaming CommissionOperator and its foreign regulator only
Usual payment railMobile money, cards, bankCrypto (coins and stablecoins)
Currency of your balanceCedisThe coin you deposit (or its dollar value)
Coin price riskNoneYes, unless you use a stablecoin
Markets and limitsVariesOften wider international markets

Neither column is automatically "better." If local protection matters most to you, a Gaming Commission licensee is the safer legal choice. If you already hold crypto and understand the risks, an established offshore company with published rules is a different set of trade-offs, not a free lunch. Our page on foreign betting sites in Ghana goes deeper.

Ten-minute company check before your first deposit

  1. Write down the operating company named in the terms.
  2. Find that name on the regulator's register and confirm the licence is active.
  3. Read the restricted-countries list.
  4. Read the governing-law and complaints clauses.
  5. Find the published withdrawal minimums, fees and times for your coin.
  6. Find the identity-check trigger.
  7. Search complaints from the last year and look for patterns.
  8. Confirm the domain spelling and bookmark it.
  9. Make a small test deposit, then a small test withdrawal before betting properly.
  10. Set a deposit limit in the account tools on day one.

Five questions to put to support before you deposit

A live chat conversation tells you a lot about a company. Ask these and judge both the answers and the tone:

Save the chat transcript. If anything goes wrong later, a written answer from the company's own support is useful evidence.

Tax and records in Ghana

The 10% withholding tax on betting winnings was removed from 2 April 2025 under the Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act 1129), but the Ghana Revenue Authority says winnings can still be reportable in your annual income tax. Offshore companies won't send you Ghanaian tax paperwork, so keep your own records: dates, coins, amounts and transaction IDs. See sports betting tax in Ghana for more.

Keep it small and keep control

Even the best-run company has an edge over you on every bet. Bet only spare money, set limits, and walk away when it stops being fun. My take

Don't choose a crypto betting company by its banner. Choose it by its paperwork: who signs your contract, which regulator lists it, what the terms say about withdrawals and verification, and how it has treated customers over the years. If you can't find those answers in ten minutes, that's your answer. And whatever you choose, never let an agent or "helper" hold your coins for you, my brother.

Questions punters ask

What is a crypto betting company?

It is the legal business behind a betting site that accepts cryptocurrency deposits and withdrawals. The brand you see is often run by a separate operating company, which is the one named in the terms and on the licence register.

Are crypto betting companies licensed in Ghana?

Gambling in Ghana is licensed by the Gaming Commission under Act 721. Offshore crypto operators such as Cloudbet hold foreign licences (Cloudbet's is from Curaçao) and are not licensed by the Gaming Commission, so local complaint routes don't apply.

How do I check who owns a betting site?

Open the terms and conditions, find the company the agreement is with, then search that exact name on the regulator's own licence register and confirm the licence is active.

Is it safe to let an agent place crypto bets for me?

No. An agent or Telegram helper is not a licensed betting company and has no contract with you. Keep your coins in your own wallet and your own account.

Do I pay tax on winnings from a crypto betting company?

Ghana removed the 10% withholding tax on winnings from 2 April 2025, but the Ghana Revenue Authority says winnings may still be reportable in annual income tax. Keep your own records.
