Double chance (DC) is the market that covers two of the three match results in one bet. Pick 1X and you need a home win or a draw; X2 covers draw or away; 12 covers either team to win with no room for a draw. It is popular in Ghana because it feels safer than a straight win — and that feeling is exactly why the prices are often squeezed. This guide shows how DC settles, how to build a fair price from the 1X2 board, when it beats or loses to draw no bet, how synthetic tickets work, and how DC legs behave in accumulators.
18+ only. General education, not tips. All odds and percentages are illustrative maths. Betting in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet is Curaçao-licensed and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana. For the refund-on-draw cousin of this market, read draw no bet explained — that page owns DNB; this one owns 1X / X2 / 12.

What double chance covers
Football match betting starts from three outcomes after 90 minutes plus stoppage: home win (1), draw (X), away win (2). Double chance lets you buy two of those three in a single selection:
| Code | You win if… | You lose if… |
|---|---|---|
| 1X | Home win or draw | Away win |
| X2 | Away win or draw | Home win |
| 12 | Home win or away win | Draw |
Settlement is almost always on regular time only. Extra time and penalties in cup ties do not rescue a DC bet that already settled as a loss after 90 minutes. Always read the market text on your slip.
Why the odds look "too short"
Because you are covering roughly two-thirds of the probability space, fair DC prices sit much lower than straight wins. If a fair match is 40% / 28% / 32%, fair 1X is about 1.47, fair X2 about 1.67, fair 12 about 1.39. Books then add margin, so offered 1X on favourites often lands in the ugly 1.10–1.25 zone where you risk a lot to win a little.
Building fair DC from the 1X2 board
Step one: take the three decimal prices and convert to implied chances (1 ÷ odds). Step two: divide each by the total so they sum to 100% — that removes the overround. Step three: add the two chances you care about and take 1 ÷ that sum.
Worked book: home 2.20, draw 3.30, away 3.40. Implied sum ≈ 105.2%. Fair chances ≈ 43.2% / 28.8% / 28.0%. Then:
| DC | Fair chance | Fair odds | Example offer | EV at offer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1X | 72.0% | 1.39 | 1.35 | −2.8% |
| X2 | 56.8% | 1.76 | 1.75 | −0.6% |
| 12 | 71.2% | 1.40 | 1.38 | −1.8% |
In this shop every DC line is slightly negative. That is normal. You wait for a line where the offer beats your fair number by enough to cover uncertainty. Our odds calculator helps with the implied-chance step.
Model-based fair DC
Using a goals model of 1.35 home and 1.15 away expected goals, match chances land near 41.3% / 26.8% / 31.8%. Fair DC: 1X ≈ 1.47, X2 ≈ 1.70, 12 ≈ 1.37. Compare those with whatever the book posts. If 1X is 1.40 against a 1.47 fair, you are paying for insurance.
Heavy favourite trap
Made-up favourite board: 1.55 / 4.00 / 6.00 (about 106.2% overround). Fair chances ≈ 60.8% / 23.5% / 15.7%. Fair 1X ≈ 1.19. Offered 1X prices and EV:
| Offered 1X | EV vs fair chances |
|---|---|
| 1.12 | −5.6% |
| 1.15 | −3.1% |
| 1.18 | −0.5% |
| 1.22 | +2.9% |
Most casual 1X bets on short favourites live in the −3% to −8% zone. That is how "safe" slips quietly drain a bankroll over a season.
Double chance vs draw no bet
Both lose only when the other team wins. The difference is the draw:
- Double chance 1X — draw pays you as a winner at short odds.
- DNB / AH 0 — draw refunds your stake; you need a win to profit.
On the 1.35 v 1.15 model, fair DNB home ≈ 1.77 while fair 1X ≈ 1.47. Illustrative EV pairs:
| Offers | DNB EV | DC 1X EV |
|---|---|---|
| DNB 1.72 / DC 1.35 | −2.1% | −8.0% |
| DNB 1.80 / DC 1.40 | +1.2% | −4.6% |
| DNB 1.65 / DC 1.30 | −5.0% | −11.4% |
In these examples DNB is the better expression of the same opinion. DC wins the comparison only when its price is unusually soft relative to DNB — which happens, but less often than people hope. Always price both. Details on refunds sit in the DNB guide; Asian mirrors are in Asian handicap explained.
Synthetic double chance
You can build a DIY 1X by splitting stake across home win and draw in the 1X2 market. Equalised payout method: choose stakes so home win and draw return the same amount. For prices 2.20 and 3.30, the break-even combined payout multiple is about 1.32 (that is 1 ÷ (1/2.20 + 1/3.30)). If the book’s listed 1X is 1.35, the listed market is slightly better than this synthetic. If listed 1X is 1.25 while synthetic reaches 1.32, consider the split — and watch for different rules on voids and cash-outs.
Synthetics cost two commission layers if your book charges per bet, and they can be fiddly on mobile. Use them when the gap is obvious, not for GH₵5 experiments.
When 12 (no draw) makes sense
12 wins unless the match is drawn. It appeals when you expect an open game but do not want to pick a side. Fair 12 on the balanced model is about 1.37. It is not a substitute for over 2.5 goals — a 0–0 or 1–1 kills 12 even if the match "felt" attacking. Use 12 when your edge is specifically "this should not be level," with evidence from pace and matchup, not vibes.
DC in accumulators
DC legs are popular in Ghanaian accas because they survive draws on 1X/X2. The trade-off is brutal on price. If each DC leg is truly 72% and priced at 1.30:
| Legs | Combined odds | True chance | EV |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1.69 | 51.8% | −12.4% |
| 3 | 2.20 | 37.3% | −18.0% |
| 4 | 2.86 | 26.9% | −23.2% |
| 5 | 3.71 | 19.3% | −28.2% |
A five-leg "safe" DC acca at those numbers is a donation. Prefer fewer legs with real edges. Check combinations on the accumulator calculator.
Live double chance
Live 1X on a home favourite shortens after they score and drifts if they concede. Early 0–0 live 12 prices can look juicy and then die on a dull draw. Practical rules:
- Know whether the market is full-match or from the current score.
- Do not chase a live 1X at 1.08 after a red card — the wrong kind of insurance.
- If your stream lags, skip live DC entirely.
Broader live habits: crypto live betting.
Cup ties and settlement
In cups, a team can draw 1–1 after 90 minutes and still go through on penalties. Your 1X ticket on that side already won at full time; your 12 ticket already lost. To-qualify markets are different products. Mixing them is a classic Ghana cup-weekend mistake. For cup formats generally, see guides like how to bet on a football game and competition-specific pages linked from our tips hub.
A full worked decision
Opinion: home 44%, draw 26%, away 30%. Offers: home 2.25, 1X 1.33, home DNB 1.60, home AH −0.25 at 1.95.
- Home win EV: 0.44 × 2.25 − 1 = −1.0%.
- 1X EV: 0.70 × 1.33 − 1 = −6.9%.
- DNB at 1.60: 0.44 × 1.60 + 0.26 − 1 = −3.6%.
- DNB at 1.72: 0.44 × 1.72 + 0.26 − 1 = +1.7%.
Only when DNB stretches toward 1.72 does this opinion become interesting; the 1.33 double chance never does. That is the whole method — arithmetic before emotion.
Bankroll and staking
Because DC prices are short, people inflate stakes "because it rarely loses." That flips risk: you lose less often but stake more, so one away win hurts the same. Keep DC units equal to or smaller than your straight-win units. Example: GH₵700 monthly bankroll, GH₵14 unit (2%). One unit on a +EV DC line; never five units because the odd is 1.20.
Common mistakes
- Building five-leg DC accas for a "sure" small profit.
- Using 1X on 1.15 favourites without checking fair odds near 1.08–1.12.
- Thinking DC cannot lose — it loses every time the uncovered result happens.
- Ignoring DNB when it is the better-priced twin.
- Betting 12 on low-event matches that scream draw.
- Forgetting 90-minute settlement in cup games.
Routine
- De-margin the 1X2 board.
- Compute fair 1X, X2, 12.
- Compare with DNB and AH 0 on the same side.
- Bet only with a clear edge and a planned stake.
- Log the result including pushes on related AH bets for learning.
Where DC fits in a Ghana punter's toolkit
DC is a tool, not a lifestyle. It shines when:
- You have a strong view against one result (for example, away win looks too likely on the board) and the DC price covering the other two is soft.
- You are hedging a future or an outright with a match-night ticket (advanced; size carefully).
- You need a teaching bet to understand settlement — then move toward sharper markets.
It is usually the wrong tool when you are casually backing every home favourite in the GPL or Premier League at 1.18 1X because "they won't lose." That pattern is how books smile.
Line shopping
DC margins differ wildly between books. A jump from 1.28 to 1.36 on the same 1X is enormous in EV terms. If you can hold accounts or use a crypto book alongside a cedi book, compare before you tap. Confirm both settle on 90 minutes. For more market types, see types of betting in Ghana.
Psychology
Short-priced DC wins feel like skill; they are often just probability doing what it does. Track closing line value if you can: did the 1X shorten after you bet? That is a healthier scoreboard than celebrating 1.20 tickets that were still −4% EV.
After a DC loss, do not "recover" with a bigger DC acca the same evening. Losses on insurance markets sting because they feel unfair. They are not unfair — you got paid short odds for a reason.
Reading Ghanaian slip culture around DC
Walk into any betting shop conversation in Accra or Kumasi on a Saturday and you will hear double chance mixed with "banker" talk. The social script says: put 1X on the big home side, stack four of them, collect a modest multiplier, celebrate. The maths script says: four legs at true 70% and 1.28 odds is still a losing product. Culture is not destiny. You can enjoy the chat and still refuse the slip.
A healthier social habit is to pick one DC bet where you actually did the fair-price work, stake one unit, and let friends stack what they want. You will look boring. Your bankroll will look better by June.
Home favourite 1X versus away dog X2
Most DC volume sits on 1X favourites. That is also where margins are fattest because everyone wants the same ticket. X2 on a decent away side can be the quieter market. If the home favourite is inflated to 1.40 in the win market, X2 might still be sitting near a fair number because fewer casuals click it.
Worked sketch: fair chances 48% / 27% / 25%. Fair 1X ≈ 1.33, fair X2 ≈ 1.92. If the book posts 1.25 and 1.95, the away-side DC is the only conversation worth having. Same match, opposite clicks.

Correlation with goals markets
People build bet-builders like 1X + under 2.5. Those two can fit the same story (cagey home side), but the book prices the package with extra margin. Price each leg alone first. If 1X is already −5% EV, bolting on a total does not heal it. If both legs are fair and the builder odds are close to the product of the singles after a small discount check, then consider a small stake — not a "lottery ticket" size.
Second-half and half-time double chance
Some books offer DC for the first half or second half only. Settlement windows change everything. A team can lose the first half 0–1 and still win the match; first-half 1X is already dead. These markets are optional advanced tools. If you cannot quote the settlement sentence in one breath, stick to full-match DC.
Comparing three books without overthinking
You do not need twenty accounts. Two is enough. Write a tiny table on paper:
| Book | 1X | X2 | 12 | Home DNB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 1.30 | 1.70 | 1.33 | 1.62 |
| B | 1.36 | 1.66 | 1.35 | 1.70 |
Against fair 1X 1.39 / DNB 1.77, Book B's 1.36 1X and 1.70 DNB are both less bad — and DNB on B is the standout. That five-minute table beats an hour of watching warm-up videos.
When DC is the wrong answer to the right fear
Fear: "I cannot take a straight win because the draw is live." DC is one answer. Others:
- DNB / AH 0 if you are fine with a refund.
- AH +0.25 / +0.5 if you want the draw to pay partly or fully on a plus line.
- Skip the match if every insurance price is trash.
Skipping is a position. Ghanaian betting culture underrates it. The match will finish whether or not your name is on a slip.
Season-long tracking
Keep a simple sheet: date, fixture label (Team A vs Team B is fine — no need for live names in your public notes), market, odds, fair odds, stake, result, profit. After 50 DC bets you will see your real average odds and hit rate. If you hit 74% at average 1.28, you are roughly break-even before mistakes; if you hit 70% at 1.28, you are bleeding. Feelings lie; sheets do not.
More EV boards for practice
Balanced match fair 41% / 29% / 30%. Offers and EV for 1X:
| 1X offer | EV |
|---|---|
| 1.25 | 0.70×1.25−1 = −12.5% |
| 1.32 | −7.6% |
| 1.38 | −3.4% |
| 1.45 | +1.5% |
| 1.50 | +5.0% |
You need roughly the mid-1.40s before this opinion's 1X becomes positive. That is why so many 1.28 tickets are hope, not edge.
Same fair chances for 12 (71% fair chance, fair odds ≈ 1.41):
| 12 offer | EV |
|---|---|
| 1.30 | −7.7% |
| 1.35 | −4.2% |
| 1.40 | −0.6% |
| 1.45 | +3.0% |
Teaching example with cedis
Stake GH₵50 on 1X at 1.34. If it wins, profit is GH₵17. If it loses, you are down GH₵50. You need to win about three of these for every loss just to break even on equal stakes (because 50/17 ≈ 2.94). At a true 70% hit rate you expect 7 wins and 3 losses per 10 bets: +7×17 − 3×50 = +119 − 150 = −31 over 10 bets. That is the quiet leak. Raise the odds or cut the market.
DC and Asian plus lines side by side
Home +0.5 Asian is economically close to 1X in spirit (home win or draw both prosper) but priced on a two-way board and may carry different margins. Check both. Sometimes AH +0.5 is 1.44 while 1X is 1.30 for the same underlying view — the Asian line wins. Sometimes it is the reverse. Tools are not ranked by popularity; they are ranked by price.
What beginners should practice for a week
- Each day, pick one match and write fair 1X, X2, 12 without betting.
- Compare to two books.
- Note which DC lines were within 2% of fair.
- Only on day seven, allow a single real DC stake if a line clears your edge bar.
That week costs almost nothing and teaches more than a month of impulsive 1X bankers.
Responsible use inside insurance markets
Insurance language is dangerous for anyone tilting. If you catch yourself saying "I will just DC it to get the money back," stop. Recovery DC after a loss is still a new risk. Walk, drink water, call a friend, use the helplines if needed. The market will be there tomorrow; your peace of mind is harder to reload.
GPL and European cards: same maths
Whether the match is in the Ghana Premier League or a European league on Sunday afternoon, double chance arithmetic does not change. What changes is liquidity and how hard the public hammers home 1X. Local derbies can see 1X crushed to nonsense prices. Midweek European undercards sometimes leave softer DC numbers because fewer Ghanaian slips focus there. Hunt softness, not familiarity.
If you follow one local club emotionally, hard-rule yourself: no DC on that club for a month. Use the month to practise on neutral fixtures. Shirt bias is the silent tax on double chance.
Cash-out and DC
Cash-out offers on short DC tickets are often terrible because the book already has little liability. Seeing a cash-out of GH₵52 on a GH₵50 bet at 1.30 with twenty minutes left and 1–0 is not a gift; it is a shaved offer. Either trust the position you priced or do not bet it. Mid-bet panic is not a strategy.
Void rules and postponements
If a match is postponed beyond your bookmaker's void window, DC bets usually void with stake returned. If a match is abandoned after it has become official under the rules (thresholds vary), settlement can follow the score at abandonment or void entirely. Read the rule article once; do not learn it during a storm delay in Kumasi.
Building a personal edge bar
Pick a minimum EV before you click — for example +3% after your own fair price. Write it on a sticky note on your phone case. DC bets without that bar do not get placed. Raising the bar to +5% means fewer bets and less drip loss. Lowering it to 0% because you are bored is how the month disappears.
Revisit the bar after 50 logged bets. If you cannot beat the market even with a +3% filter, your fair prices are optimistic — tighten inputs before you loosen the bar.
Final teaching board
Favourite-leaning match fair 55% / 24% / 21%. Fair 1X ≈ 1.27, fair X2 ≈ 2.22, fair 12 ≈ 1.32, fair home DNB ≈ 1.38. Offered 1X 1.20 (EV −5.2%), offered DNB 1.42 (EV +2.9%), offered X2 2.10 (EV −5.5%). The only constructive ticket in that shop is home DNB. Double chance is present on the card and still wrong for your money. Memorise that feeling.
One-page memory sheet
If you remember nothing else, remember this card:
- 1X = home or draw; X2 = away or draw; 12 = no draw.
- Fair DC = 1 ÷ (fair chance A + fair chance B) after you de-margin 1X2.
- Always compare with DNB before you click 1X or X2.
- Short DC accas are usually −EV even when they "hit often."
- 90 minutes settle the bet unless the rules say otherwise.
Screenshot those five lines. Stick them above your betting app. When a friend forwards a five-leg 1X slip with a fire emoji, look at the sheet first. Most nights the correct action is delete and drink water.
Double chance will still have a place in a sharp week — on the rare soft line, sized like any other small edge. Treated that way, it is a scalpel. Treated as a lifestyle, it is a slow leak with better marketing than a straight-win losing run.
Last reminder before you stake
Ask one blunt question: if this 1X loses, will I chase tonight? If the answer is yes, the stake is already too large — or the bet should not be placed. Double chance is still gambling. Price it, size it, or pass. That discipline is the real edge available to anyone in Ghana with a phone and a notebook.
Crypto and Cloudbet

Tax
Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act 1129) removed the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025. Winnings may still be reportable as income. Keep records: sports betting tax in Ghana.
Double chance checklist
- Which two results am I covering, and which one kills me?
- What is my fair DC price after de-margining 1X2?
- Is DNB a better deal for the same opinion?
- Am I stacking too many short DC legs?
- Is the stake a normal unit, not an inflated "safe" unit?

Questions punters ask
What is double chance in football betting?
It is a bet that covers two of the three match results: 1X (home or draw), X2 (away or draw), or 12 (home or away).
How is double chance different from draw no bet?
Both lose only if the uncovered side wins. On a draw, double chance pays out; draw no bet refunds your stake.
How do I calculate a fair double chance price?
Remove the margin from 1X2 odds, add the two outcome chances you want, then take 1 divided by that combined chance.
Why are double chance odds so low?
Because you are covering most of the probability. Fair 1X on a balanced match is often around 1.35–1.50 before bookmaker margin.
Are double chance accumulators safe?
They lose less often per leg but usually have poor combined expected value. Short prices multiply into a bad deal across many legs.
Does extra time count for double chance?
Usually no — settlement is on 90 minutes plus stoppage. Check your bookmaker's rules for cup ties.
