My brother, half time/full time is one of those markets that looks like free money on the slip. Pick the favourite to lead at the break and win at the end, the odds jump from about 2.00 to over 3.00, and you feel clever. Sometimes it works. But HT/FT has nine possible outcomes, and the bookmakers know very well how often each one happens. Let me show you how the market really works, where the traps are, and the few situations where a half time/full time bet can make sense.
18+ only. General information, not a promise of winnings. Betting in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet, the crypto sportsbook we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.

What a half time/full time bet is
You predict two results in one bet: the result at half-time and the result at full-time. Both must be right for the bet to win. Each half can end as a home win (1), a draw (X) or an away win (2), so there are nine combinations:
| HT/FT pick | What has to happen |
|---|---|
| 1/1 | Home team leads at half-time and wins |
| 1/X | Home team leads at half-time, match ends level |
| 1/2 | Home team leads at half-time, away team wins |
| X/1 | Level at half-time, home team wins |
| X/X | Level at half-time, level at full-time |
| X/2 | Level at half-time, away team wins |
| 2/1 | Away team leads at half-time, home team wins |
| 2/X | Away team leads at half-time, match ends level |
| 2/2 | Away team leads at half-time and wins |
On some Ghanaian betting slips you'll see it written as "HT/FT", "Half Time/Full Time" or "Double Result". It's the same market.
How HT/FT bets settle
- The half-time result includes first-half stoppage time.
- The full-time result is after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties normally don't count.
- If a match is abandoned or postponed, rules differ between bookmakers. Many void the bet if the match isn't completed or replayed within a set time. Read the rules page of your site.
- VAR decisions count as the official result stands at each whistle.
How often each outcome lands (a simple model)
To understand HT/FT, it helps to see rough numbers. I built a simple illustrative model of a match where the home side is a moderate favourite: expected goals of 1.5 for the home team and 1.0 for the away team, with 45% of goals scored in the first half and 55% in the second. Goals in each half are modelled as random (Poisson). Real matches are messier, but the pattern is very useful:
| HT/FT | Model chance | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|
| 1/1 | 29.5% | 3.39 |
| X/1 | 16.9% | 5.91 |
| X/X | 16.4% | 6.09 |
| 2/2 | 14.0% | 7.13 |
| X/2 | 9.8% | 10.24 |
| 1/X | 4.8% | 20.94 |
| 2/X | 4.8% | 20.94 |
| 2/1 | 2.4% | 42.20 |
| 1/2 | 1.4% | 69.79 |
Three lessons jump out:
- Half-time draws are very common. In this model, the match is level at the break about 43% of the time. First halves have fewer goals, so 0-0 and 1-1 at half-time happen a lot.
- A big share of home wins start level. The home team wins about 48.8% of the time overall, but only about 60% of those wins (29.5%) come with a half-time lead. The rest come from a level half-time, and a small slice from behind.
- Comebacks are rare. 2/1 and 1/2 together are under 4%. They pay big because they almost never happen.
How the favourite's strength changes the picture
Same model, different matchups:
| Matchup (home xG v away xG) | 1/1 | X/1 | X/X | Level at HT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close game (1.2 v 1.0) | 23.5% | 15.3% | 19.5% | 46.8% |
| Moderate favourite (1.5 v 1.0) | 29.5% | 16.9% | 16.4% | 43.1% |
| Strong favourite (1.9 v 0.8) | 40.8% | 19.9% | 13.6% | 39.5% |
Even with a strong favourite, the match is level at half-time almost 40% of the time in this model. That's why 1/1 is never as safe as it feels. In close games, X/X becomes one of the most likely single outcomes, which is something many punters overlook.
Comparing your price with the bookmaker's price
HT/FT markets usually carry a bigger margin than the plain 1X2 market because there are nine outcomes and books shade the popular ones. So you need a clear gap before betting. Here are some made-up bookmaker prices against the moderate-favourite model, with a GH₵10 stake:
| Pick | Book odds | Model chance | Expected result on GH₵10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/1 | 3.20 | 29.5% | −GH₵0.56 |
| X/1 | 5.50 | 16.9% | −GH₵0.70 |
| X/X | 6.50 | 16.4% | +GH₵0.66 |
| 2/1 | 26.00 | 2.4% | −GH₵3.76 |
The expected result is the model chance multiplied by the total return, minus the stake. For X/X at 6.50: 0.164 × 65 − 10 = +GH₵0.66. In this example, the popular 1/1 and the exciting 2/1 comeback are both bad value, while the boring X/X is the only one with a small edge. That pattern is common: punters love backing favourites to dominate and love long-shot comebacks, so those outcomes tend to be priced short.

HT/FT tips that actually help
1. Know how the teams start matches
Some teams start fast and score early. Others are slow starters who grow into games or rely on late substitutions. Look at each team's first-half and second-half goal records over a decent sample, home and away. A favourite that often scores late suits X/1 more than 1/1.
2. Think about the second half
Second halves usually have more goals than first halves, because teams tire, chase results and make attacking changes. That's why many matches that are level at the break don't stay level.
3. Respect tight, low-scoring matchups
When two defensive teams meet, or in a cagey derby with lots at stake, X/X becomes much more likely. If the book still prices X/X as a long shot in that type of game, it can be worth a small stake.
4. Check team news and motivation
A favourite resting players, or a team that only needs a draw, changes how the match unfolds. A side protecting a lead may sit deep in the second half, which lowers the chance of a late goal.
5. Don't build HT/FT accumulators
A three-fold of 1/1 picks at 3.20 each pays 32.77 times your stake, which looks amazing. But if each pick lands about 29.5% of the time, the chance of all three is about 2.6%. With prices shaded below fair on each leg, the expected loss grows on every leg you add. Check the maths in our accumulator calculator.
6. Ignore "sure HT/FT" and "fixed" tips
You'll see Telegram and WhatsApp groups selling "confirmed HT/FT" or "fixed 2/1" games. No honest tipster can guarantee a half-time and full-time result. Paying for "fixed match" tips is a common scam, and if a match really were fixed, betting on it would be part of something criminal. Stay away.

Live HT/FT: betting at the break
Many sites offer the full-time result at half-time, or a "second-half result" market. This can be more useful than pre-match HT/FT because you've seen the first half. A few tips:
- Watch the first half, not just the score. A 0-0 where the favourite dominated chances is different from a 0-0 where neither team created anything.
- Check red cards and injuries. A sending-off changes the second half massively.
- Remember the delay. Data feeds and TV streams can lag. Don't try to beat the feed.
- Don't chase a lost pre-match HT/FT bet. If your 1/1 is gone at half-time, don't double up on X/1 just to "save" it. Judge the second half fresh or leave it.
HT/FT versus similar markets
| Market | What it needs | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Half time/full time | Correct result at both whistles | Strong view on how the match unfolds |
| Win either half | Team wins at least one half | Favourite expected to win a half but maybe not the match |
| Win both halves | Team outscores opponent in each half | Big mismatch |
| Highest scoring half | Which half has more goals | Slow-starting teams, late-goal patterns |
| Half-time result only | Correct 1X2 at the break | Strong view on the first half alone |
| Draw no bet | Team wins, stake back on draw | Favourite with draw risk |
Sometimes a simpler market expresses your view better. If you think a favourite will win but you're not sure when, a plain home win or draw no bet is cleaner than gambling on the exact half-time score. Our guide to types of betting in Ghana explains these markets in more depth.
HT/FT in the Ghana Premier League and other leagues
Ghanaian punters bet HT/FT on everything from the Ghana Premier League to the big European leagues. The same principles apply everywhere, but the data quality differs. For major European leagues you can find half-by-half goal stats easily. For local football, data is thinner, so your estimates will be rougher and you should stake smaller. Pitch conditions in the rainy season, travel and kick-off times can also affect how matches unfold. If you bet on local clubs, our Asante Kotoko betting guide and Hearts of Oak odds guide are good starting points.
A simple HT/FT staking plan
Because HT/FT outcomes land less often than straight results, losing runs are longer. A careful plan:
- Use a small flat stake, around 1% of your monthly betting budget. On GH₵500 a month, that's GH₵5 per HT/FT bet.
- Expect losing runs of 8 to 10 bets even on decent picks priced around 5.00 to 6.50.
- Keep a record: match, pick, odds, your estimated chance, stake and result.
- Review after 50 bets. If your results are much worse than your estimates, stop or cut stakes.
Common HT/FT mistakes
- Backing 1/1 on every favourite because the odds look bigger than a straight win.
- Forgetting how often matches are level at half-time.
- Chasing big comeback prices like 2/1 and 1/2.
- Stacking HT/FT picks into accumulators.
- Paying for "fixed" or "sure" HT/FT tips.
- Not reading the settlement rules on abandoned matches.
Where to bet HT/FT from Ghana
Most Gaming Commission-licensed operators in Ghana offer HT/FT on popular football matches, with cedi stakes and mobile money. Offshore crypto books such as Cloudbet also list HT/FT on many leagues, but Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao, not by the Gaming Commission of Ghana. Read our guide on whether betting is legal in Ghana before choosing a site, and compare HT/FT prices on two sites when you can, because margins on this market vary a lot.
On tax: according to the Ghana Revenue Authority, the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings was removed from 2 April 2025 under the Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act 1129). Winnings can still count in your annual income tax return, so keep records.
Bet responsibly
HT/FT is a fun way to add interest to a match, but it's a low-strike-rate market. Keep stakes small and never bet money you need for rent, school fees or food. Questions punters ask
What does HT/FT mean in betting?
Half time/full time. You predict the result at half-time and at full-time in one bet, and both must be correct.
What does X/1 mean in HT/FT?
The match is level at half-time and the home team wins at full-time.
Does extra time count in HT/FT bets?
Normally no. Full-time means 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Check your betting site's rules.
Which HT/FT outcome is most common?
It depends on the match, but when there's a favourite, 1/1 or 2/2 is often the single most likely outcome, and half-time draws are very common overall.
Are 2/1 and 1/2 bets worth it?
They pay big because comebacks after trailing at the break are rare. They're usually priced short of fair, so treat them as small fun bets at most.
Can I get guaranteed HT/FT tips?
No. Anyone selling sure or fixed HT/FT results is very likely running a scam.
