Every summer, tennis takes over the sports pages for two weeks, and Wimbledon is the tournament even casual fans in Ghana tune in for. If you usually bet on football, tennis can feel strange at first: no draws, scoring in games and sets, and prices that swing on every serve. Don't worry, my brother. In this guide I'll show you how Wimbledon works for punters, which markets make sense, how to turn a player's chances into fair set-betting prices, what's special about grass, and what time the matches actually start in Ghana.
18+ only. This is general information, not a tip or a guarantee. Every price and percentage below is an illustrative example worked out with simple maths; no real players or matches are being tipped. Betting in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet, the crypto sportsbook we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.

Wimbledon basics for punters
- Where and when: the All England Club in Wimbledon, south-west London, usually over two weeks from late June into July. Check the official schedule each year.
- Surface: grass, the only Grand Slam played on it. Grass is fast and the ball stays low, which rewards big serves and aggressive play.
- Format: men's singles are best of five sets; women's singles are best of three. The main singles draws have 128 players, so a champion has to win seven matches.
- Deciding sets: since 2022, a deciding set that reaches 6-6 is settled by a first-to-10 tiebreak (win by two). That matters for total games and set betting.
- Other events: doubles, mixed doubles, juniors and wheelchair events also run, but betting depth is much thinner there.
What time are Wimbledon matches in Ghana?
Ghana is on GMT all year. London switches to British Summer Time (GMT+1) in summer, so during Wimbledon, London is one hour ahead of Accra.
| Typical London start | Ghana time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 11:00 (outside courts) | 10:00 | Early rounds have dozens of matches running at once |
| 13:00 (No. 1 Court) | 12:00 | Usually three matches back to back |
| 13:30 (Centre Court) | 12:30 | The big names; finals traditionally start mid-afternoon London time |
| Evening finish | Evening | Matches under the roof on the two show courts can run late |
Start times are a guide. Tennis matches follow on from each other, so "not before" times are common, and rain on outside courts can push everything back. Always check the order of play on the day.
The main Wimbledon betting markets
| Market | What you're backing | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Match winner | Who wins the match | No draw, so it's a two-way price |
| Set betting | Exact score in sets, e.g. 3-1 | Bigger odds, harder to hit |
| Set handicap | A player with a set start, e.g. +1.5 sets | Popular for backing underdogs to stay competitive |
| Games handicap | A player with a games start, e.g. −4.5 games | Counts every game across the match |
| Total games | Over or under a number of games | Big servers and tiebreaks push totals up |
| Tiebreak in match | Whether any set goes to a tiebreak | More common on grass |
| First set winner | Who takes the opening set | Quick result, but very swingy |
| Outright | Tournament winner | Long-term bet; margin is usually large |
If you're new to reading prices, our guide on how betting odds work is a good start, and the odds calculator converts any price into an implied chance.
Match winner: reading a two-way price
Say a made-up first-round match is priced at 1.40 for the favourite and 3.00 for the underdog.
- Favourite: 1 ÷ 1.40 = 71.4% implied.
- Underdog: 1 ÷ 3.00 = 33.3% implied.
- Total: 104.8%, so the margin is 4.8%.
- Remove it and the fair chances are about 68.2% and 31.8%.
Now say your own research gives the underdog a 35% chance. Your average return on the underdog at 3.00 is 0.35 × 3.00 − 1 = +5%. If you only rate them at 30%, it's −10%, and at 28% it's −16%. A few percentage points of judgement decide whether a bet is good or bad, which is why tennis rewards homework.
From set chance to match chance: the key maths
Tennis has a neat property: if you can estimate how often a player wins a single set against this opponent, you can work out the match chance and every set-betting price. Best of five rewards the better player more than best of three, because there's more time for quality to show.
| Chance to win each set | Best of 3 (women) | Fair odds | Best of 5 (men) | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 55% | 57.5% | 1.74 | 59.3% | 1.69 |
| 60% | 64.8% | 1.54 | 68.3% | 1.47 |
| 65% | 71.8% | 1.39 | 76.5% | 1.31 |
| 70% | 78.4% | 1.28 | 83.7% | 1.19 |
| 75% | 84.4% | 1.19 | 89.6% | 1.12 |
This is a simplified model that treats each set as independent, which isn't perfectly true (fatigue and momentum exist), but it's a solid starting point. Two lessons jump out. First, upsets are more common in the women's draw simply because matches are shorter. Second, a men's favourite at 1.20 or shorter isn't automatically "safe"; it still loses about one time in six even if fairly priced.
Set betting: fair prices you can check
Using the same model, a men's favourite who wins 65% of sets has this set-score spread:
| Set score | Chance | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|
| Favourite 3-0 | 27.5% | 3.64 |
| Favourite 3-1 | 28.8% | 3.47 |
| Favourite 3-2 | 20.2% | 4.95 |
| Underdog 3-2 | 10.9% | 9.20 |
| Underdog 3-1 | 8.4% | 11.96 |
| Underdog 3-0 | 4.3% | 23.32 |
Here's where it gets interesting. Many punters instinctively back the favourite 3-0, so that price often gets squeezed. Say a bookmaker offers 3-0 at 2.60 and 3-1 at 3.75. On these numbers, the 3-0 bet returns −28.6% on average, while 3-1 returns +8.1%. Same player, same match, very different value.
For a women's match where the favourite wins 60% of sets: 2-0 is 36.0% (fair 2.78), 2-1 is 28.8% (3.47), underdog 2-1 is 19.2% (5.21), underdog 2-0 is 16.0% (6.25).
Set betting doesn't pay a draw because there isn't one, but it's a high-variance market. Keep stakes smaller than on match-winner bets.
Why grass changes the betting
Grass is the shortest part of the tennis season, and players who are excellent on clay or hard courts don't always carry that form onto grass. Things to weigh:
- Serve strength: big servers hold serve more often on grass, so sets go to tiebreaks more and upsets become possible when an underdog serves well.
- Tiebreaks mean randomness: a tiebreak is close to a coin toss between two good servers. More tiebreaks make favourites a little less certain.
- Grass form: look at results in the warm-up grass events in June, not just the season overall. Some players skip them; that's not always a bad sign, but it means less evidence.
- Early-round slips: the courts are freshest and fastest in week one, and players are still adjusting. Some bettors find more value on underdogs early on.
- Movement and injuries: grass can be slippery, especially early in the event or after rain. Watch for players with recent ankle, knee or back problems.
Totals and games handicaps
Total games is a favourite market for tennis bettors because it doesn't require you to pick a winner, just the shape of the match.
- A men's match between two strong servers often has a high line, and a single extra tiebreak can push it over.
- A heavy mismatch can finish in three quick sets, around 18 to 24 games, which helps the under.
- The first-to-10 deciding tiebreak means a men's fifth set that reaches 6-6 ends at 7-6, not with an endless advantage set. That caps the very highest totals compared with the old days.
Games handicaps work like football handicaps: the favourite at −4.5 games must win at least five more games than the opponent across the whole match. A favourite can win in four sets with two tight tiebreaks and still lose a big games handicap. Read the match, not just the winner.
Retirement and walkover rules: read them first
Tennis has a quirk football doesn't: players retire injured mid-match. Bookmakers handle this differently.
| Common rule type | What it means for a match-winner bet |
|---|---|
| "One set completed" | If at least one set is finished, the player who advances is the winner for betting |
| "Match must be completed" | Bets are void if the match isn't played to the end |
| "Ball struck" | Once the first point is played, the player who advances wins the bet |
Markets like total games and set betting are usually voided on retirement unless already decided. Check your bookmaker's tennis rules before you bet, especially if one player has an injury doubt.
Outright betting on Wimbledon
Backing the champion before the tournament starts is fun, but outright books carry big margins. A made-up board of the top 12 men at 3.50, 4.50, 6.00, 9.00, 11.00, 15.00, 21.00, 26.00, 34.00, 41.00, 51.00 and 67.00 already adds up to 111.8% before you include the rest of the 128-player field. The whole book can easily total 130% or more.
It also helps to remember the path. A champion needs seven straight wins. If a top player has an 85% chance in each round on average, that's 0.85 to the power of 7 = 32.1%. At 80% a round, it falls to 21.0%. At 90% a round, it's 47.8%. Even the favourite usually has less than a coin-flip chance of winning the title.
Outright tips:
- Look at which section of the draw a player lands in once it's published. A tough quarter can cut the chance sharply.
- Compare outright prices across bookmakers; the gaps on longer shots can be big.
- Consider whether you'd rather back a player match by match, where margins are smaller.

Live betting on Wimbledon
Tennis is one of the best sports for live betting because the score changes constantly and the stream of points gives lots of information. Keep these in mind:
- Breaks are big on grass. Because holds are common, one break of serve often decides a set. Prices swing hard after a break.
- Don't overreact to one set. A favourite who drops the first set in a best-of-five match still often wins. Under the model above, a 65% set-winner trailing by one set still wins the match about 56% of the time.
- Latency: your stream may be behind the bookmaker's data. Betting on what you just saw can mean betting on old news.
- Medical time-outs: a sudden time-out can signal a problem. Prices move fast; know your retirement rules.

A simple research routine
- Check the draw and order of play. Who plays whom, and on which day.
- Look at grass results. Recent grass matches matter more than clay form.
- Compare serve stats. Service games held and return points won tell you a lot about grass matchups.
- Check fitness and schedule. A long five-set match two days earlier can leave a player tired.
- Estimate a set-win chance. Convert it with the tables above to a match chance and set prices.
- Compare with the odds. Only bet if your chance × odds is clearly above 1.
- Record the bet. Over a few tournaments you'll learn whether your estimates are any good.
Accumulators of tennis favourites
Lots of Ghanaian punters build tennis accas from first-round favourites at 1.10 to 1.30. The trouble is that favourites at those prices still lose fairly often, and each leg carries margin. Five favourites at 1.25 each give combined odds of about 3.05. If each one really has a 78% chance, the slip lands only about 29% of the time, and your average return is around −12%. Use the accumulator calculator to check before you place it, and keep tennis accas short.
Staking for a two-week tournament
Wimbledon has hundreds of matches. It's easy to bet on too many. Set a tournament budget in advance, for example GH₵500, and stake 1–2% of it per bet (GH₵5–GH₵10). That gives you room for dozens of bets without risking the whole pot on a single upset. If you're betting with crypto, decide your budget in cedis first so you know what you're really risking.
Common mistakes
- Betting names, not form on grass. A top player overall isn't automatically top on grass.
- Ignoring best of three vs best of five. Women's matches are shorter, so upsets are more common.
- Not knowing retirement rules. It can turn a winning bet into a void, or a loser.
- Chasing in live markets. Fast prices tempt fast decisions. Slow down.
- Huge outright accas. Picking the men's and women's champions together sounds fun, but the margin compounds.
- Trusting paid "sure tennis tips". Nobody can guarantee results. Fixed-match sellers are scammers.
Betting on Wimbledon with crypto
Crypto sportsbooks like Cloudbet usually cover Grand Slam tennis, including many match markets and outrights; check which markets it lists for the match you want. Stablecoins like USDT keep your balance steady while you wait for a long tournament to finish, while BTC or ETH can rise or fall in value during that time. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.
Is it legal to bet on Wimbledon from Ghana?
Sports betting is legal in Ghana through operators licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under Act 721, for people aged 18 and over. Offshore sportsbooks aren't licensed locally, so Ghanaian regulators can't help with disputes. Our guide on whether betting is legal in Ghana has the details.
Tax

Questions punters ask
Can I bet on Wimbledon from Ghana?
Yes, through sportsbooks that offer tennis. Licensed Ghanaian operators are regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana. Offshore crypto books such as Cloudbet also cover Wimbledon but aren't licensed in Ghana.
What time do Wimbledon matches start in Ghana?
London is one hour ahead of Ghana during Wimbledon. Outside courts usually start around 10:00 Ghana time and Centre Court around 12:30 Ghana time, but always check the daily order of play.
Are men's Wimbledon matches best of five sets?
Yes, men's singles are best of five sets and women's singles are best of three. Longer matches favour the stronger player slightly more.
What happens to my bet if a player retires?
It depends on the bookmaker. Some settle match-winner bets once a set is completed, others void the bet unless the match finishes. Read the tennis rules before betting.
What is set betting in tennis?
You bet on the exact score in sets, such as 3-1 or 2-0. Odds are bigger than match-winner prices because it's harder to get right.
How does a deciding-set tiebreak work at Wimbledon?
Since 2022, if the deciding set reaches 6-6, players play a tiebreak to 10 points, winning by two. This limits how long the final set can go.
