If you follow the Ghana Premier League, you've seen Medeama on the coupon plenty of times. The Mauve and Yellow from Tarkwa became champions of Ghana in the 2022–23 season, and since then a lot of punters treat the name as an automatic banker. But a team's name is not a price. In this guide, my brother, I'll explain what Medeama betting odds actually mean, how to turn them into real chances, how to check whether a price is fair, and the common traps that make people lose money backing the "big name" without thinking.
18+ only. Everything here is general education, not a tip or a promise of winnings. All odds, scorelines and percentages below are made-up examples worked out with simple maths, not prices for a real fixture. Betting in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Medeama in two minutes: why it matters for odds
You don't need a history lesson to bet, but a little context helps you understand how the market treats a club.
- Home base: Medeama SC play out of Tarkwa in the Western Region, a mining town a good distance from Accra and Kumasi. Long trips matter in the Ghana Premier League, both for Medeama going away and for visitors coming to Tarkwa.
- Recent status: winning the 2022–23 league title moved Medeama from "decent mid-table side" to "one of the clubs people back by name". That change in reputation is exactly the kind of thing that can push odds shorter than the football justifies.
- Squads change: Ghanaian clubs sell and lose players every window. A title-winning team from a couple of seasons ago is not automatically the same team today. Always check the current squad and form yourself before trusting any price.
The point is simple: the bookmaker prices the match, but punters also move the price with their money. When lots of people back one side because of the badge, the odds on that side get shorter, and the other outcomes can drift out to bigger prices than they deserve.
The basic markets on a Medeama match
| Market | What you're backing | When it settles |
|---|---|---|
| 1X2 | Home win (1), draw (X) or away win (2) | 90 minutes plus stoppage time |
| Double chance | Two of the three outcomes, e.g. 1X = Medeama win or draw | 90 minutes |
| Draw no bet | Your team to win; stake back on a draw | 90 minutes |
| Over/under 2.5 goals | Three or more goals, or two or fewer | 90 minutes |
| Both teams to score | Each team scores at least once (yes) or not (no) | 90 minutes |
| Correct score | The exact final score | 90 minutes |
| Handicap | Your team with a goal start or deficit | 90 minutes |
Ghana Premier League matches usually get fewer markets than the English Premier League, and some bookmakers offer only 1X2 and goals. If you want a refresher on the different bet types, our guide to types of betting in Ghana covers them all.
Reading Medeama odds: from price to chance
Decimal odds tell you two things at once: how much you get back, and what chance the bookmaker is implying. The chance is simply 1 divided by the odds.
Take this made-up price for Medeama at home in Tarkwa:
| Outcome | Odds | Implied chance | Fair chance (margin removed) | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medeama win | 1.85 | 54.1% | 50.9% | 1.96 |
| Draw | 3.30 | 30.3% | 28.6% | 3.50 |
| Visitors win | 4.60 | 21.7% | 20.5% | 4.88 |
| Total | 106.1% | 100% |
The three implied chances add up to 106.1%, not 100%. That extra 6.1% is the bookmaker's margin, the built-in edge. To get the fair chances, divide each implied chance by 1.061. This tells you what the bookmaker really thinks: Medeama wins about half the time, the draw a bit under three in ten, the visitors about one in five.
You don't have to do this by hand. Our odds calculator converts prices to chances, and the guide on how betting odds work explains the formats in more detail.
Building your own view with a simple goals model
The bookmaker's chance is only useful if you have your own number to compare. A simple and honest way to get one is a goals model. You estimate how many goals each team is likely to score in this match, then use the Poisson formula (any spreadsheet has it) to turn those averages into chances for every scoreline.
How to estimate the averages:
- Look at Medeama's home goals scored and conceded per game this season, and the visitors' away numbers.
- Compare with the league average. A team that scores 1.3 at home when the league home average is 1.1 is about 18% better than average in attack.
- Multiply attack strength by the opponent's defensive weakness and the league average to get an expected goals figure for each side.
- Adjust a little for things the numbers miss: injuries, suspensions, a new coach, a long midweek trip.
Say your work gives Medeama 1.35 expected goals at home and the visitors 0.85. The Poisson maths then gives:
| Outcome | Model chance | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|
| Medeama win | 48.5% | 2.06 |
| Draw | 27.9% | 3.58 |
| Visitors win | 23.6% | 4.24 |
| Medeama win or draw (1X) | 76.4% | 1.31 |
| Medeama draw no bet | 67.3% | 1.49 |
| Over 2.5 goals | 37.7% | 2.65 |
| Under 2.5 goals | 62.3% | 1.61 |
| Both teams to score: yes | 42.4% | 2.36 |
The most likely single scores in this example are 1-0 (15.0%), 1-1 (12.7%), 0-0 (11.1%) and 2-0 (10.1%). That's typical of the Ghana Premier League, where low-scoring games are common. A basic Poisson model tends to slightly underrate draws, so many punters nudge the draw up a point or two by hand.
Where's the value? Comparing your model to the odds
Value means the odds pay more than your chance says they should. The test is: your chance × odds − 1. If that's above zero, the bet has positive expected value on your numbers. Here's the same match, per GH₵50 staked:
| Bet | Odds | Model chance | Average return | Per GH₵50 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Medeama win | 1.85 | 48.5% | −10.3% | −GH₵5.17 |
| Draw | 3.30 | 27.9% | −7.8% | −GH₵3.89 |
| Visitors win | 4.60 | 23.6% | +8.5% | +GH₵4.26 |
| Medeama or draw (1X) | 1.28 | 76.4% | −2.2% | −GH₵1.10 |
| Under 2.5 goals | 1.62 | 62.3% | +0.9% | +GH₵0.44 |
| Over 2.5 goals | 2.25 | 37.7% | −15.1% | −GH₵7.56 |
| BTTS: no | 1.72 | 57.6% | −1.0% | −GH₵0.48 |
Look at what happened. The popular bet, Medeama to win at 1.85, is the worst value on the board in this example. Your model has them at 48.5%, but the price implies 54.1%. That gap is the "name tax": people back the champions' badge, the price shortens, and the value moves to the other side.
Does that mean you should back the visitors at 4.60? Only if you trust your inputs. A +8.5% edge on a 23.6% chance still loses three times out of four. Small edges on long shots need many bets and a steady bankroll before they show. Plenty of sharp punters would simply pass, or take a small stake, rather than force it.
The under 2.5 at 1.62 is close to fair, roughly break-even. Close-to-zero bets are not value; they're just paying the margin slowly.
Draw no bet and double chance on Medeama
When you like Medeama but fear the draw, DNB and double chance are the usual tools.
- Draw no bet: your fair DNB price from the model is 1.49. On DNB the full average return is (win chance × odds) + draw chance − 1, because a draw gives your stake back. At 1.40 that's −4.2%; at 1.45 it's −1.8%. Neither is value in this example, but 1.45 loses less than half as much as 1.40. Shopping around matters.
- Double chance 1X: at 1.28 versus a fair 1.31, it's slightly negative. Double chance on the favourite is often squeezed because it's a popular "safe" bet in accas.
Our guide to betting on underdogs covers the opposite side: the double chance X2 on the visitors, which sometimes holds more value when the favourite is over-backed.
Medeama away from Tarkwa: a different story
Away matches often get priced as if the badge travels with the team. Here's a made-up away fixture:
| Outcome | Odds | Fair chance (margin removed) | Model chance (1.25 v 1.05) | Average return |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home side win | 3.40 | 28.0% | 40.8% | +38.8% |
| Draw | 3.10 | 30.7% | 28.2% | −12.6% |
| Medeama win | 2.30 | 41.3% | 31.0% | −28.8% |
The bookmaker total here is 105.1%. In this example the market makes Medeama favourites on the road, while a goals model built on away form (1.05 expected goals for Medeama, 1.25 for the hosts) says the opposite. For Medeama at 2.30 to break even, they'd need a 43.5% chance; the model gives 31.0%, which would only justify odds of about 3.23.
That's an extreme gap on purpose, to make the lesson clear. In real life, if your model and the market disagree that much, the first thing to do is check your inputs: did you miss a suspension, a new signing, a fixture pile-up? Big disagreements are sometimes value, and sometimes a sign your numbers are wrong.
Things that move Medeama odds
| Factor | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | Long road trips across Ghana can leave players tired | Distance, midweek games, travel day |
| Pitch and weather | Heavy rain and poor pitches often mean fewer goals | Recent weather in the town, pitch reports |
| Fixture congestion | Cup or continental games stretch squads | Whether key players were rested or played twice in a week |
| Squad changes | Transfers and injuries change the team's level | Club announcements, local sports news |
| Coach changes | A new coach can shift tactics and results | How long the coach has been in charge |
| Public money | Big-name backing shortens prices | Whether the price has moved without team news |
A useful habit: write the odds down when you first see them, then again before kick-off. If Medeama shortens from 2.10 to 1.85 with no injury news, the implied chance has jumped from 47.6% to 54.1% purely on money. That's often a sign the value has gone.
Live betting on Medeama matches
In-play odds move with every goal, card and minute. A few principles keep you out of trouble:
- Time decay: at 0-0, the draw gets shorter every minute and under 2.5 gets shorter too. If you liked the under before kick-off, the pre-match price was usually the better one.
- Early goals: if the visitors score first, Medeama's price drifts sharply. If your pre-match view was that Medeama were the better side, a short-term drift can be value, but only if nothing else changed, such as a red card.
- Delays: live markets on local leagues often suspend for long spells and the stream (if any) may lag. Don't bet live on what you think is happening; bet on what you know.
Our page on live betting covers in-play tactics in more depth, and sports betting and live odds in Ghana explains how live prices are built.

Medeama in accumulators
This is where most Ghanaian punters lose the most. A typical slip has Medeama at home plus four or five other "sure" favourites. The problem is that the margin multiplies across every leg.
| Legs at 1.50 | Combined odds | Chance if each leg is really 63% | Average return |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.50 | 63.0% | −5.5% |
| 2 | 2.25 | 39.7% | −10.7% |
| 3 | 3.38 | 25.0% | −15.6% |
| 4 | 5.06 | 15.8% | −20.3% |
| 5 | 7.59 | 9.9% | −24.6% |
Each leg here is only slightly overpriced, but by five legs you're giving away about a quarter of your stake on average. If you must play accas, keep them short and only include legs where you've done your own work. The accumulator calculator shows the combined odds and true chance for any slip.
Comparing Medeama with the other big names
The same name-tax logic applies to every popular club. Our Hearts of Oak odds guide and Asante Kotoko betting guide walk through how those two clubs, with their huge fanbases, get priced. Medeama's support is smaller nationally, but since the title win the club gets more casual backing than it used to. When two well-known clubs meet, the public money often splits, and the prices can be fairer than usual.
For the league as a whole, see our Ghana Premier League betting guide.
A worked example from start to finish
Here's how a careful punter might approach a made-up Medeama home game:
- Note the prices: Medeama 1.85, draw 3.30, visitors 4.60, under 2.5 at 1.62.
- Remove the margin: 106.1% total, fair market chances 50.9 / 28.6 / 20.5.
- Build your own number: season data gives 1.35 v 0.85 expected goals. Medeama's first-choice striker is fit, the visitors played midweek. You leave the numbers as they are.
- Compare: Medeama −10.3%, visitors +8.5%, under 2.5 about +0.9%.
- Decide: the only clear edge is on the visitors, but it's a long shot and your confidence in the inputs is medium. You stake a small amount, say 1% of your betting bankroll, or simply pass.
- Record it: write down the bet, the odds, your chance and the result. After 50 to 100 bets you'll know whether your model is any good.
Notice what's missing: no "Medeama never lose at home" thinking, no "they're champions so it's safe". Every decision is based on price versus chance.
Staking: how much to put on a Medeama bet
| Bankroll | 1% stake | 2% stake | Losing run of 8 at 2% |
|---|---|---|---|
| GH₵500 | GH₵5 | GH₵10 | about GH₵74 down |
| GH₵1,000 | GH₵10 | GH₵20 | about GH₵149 down |
| GH₵2,500 | GH₵25 | GH₵50 | about GH₵373 down |
Losing runs of eight or more happen even to good bettors, especially when backing outsiders. Fixed small stakes keep you in the game long enough for any real edge to show.
Common mistakes with Medeama odds
- Betting the badge, not the price. A title from a few seasons back says nothing about tonight's value.
- Ignoring the margin. If you don't remove it, you overrate every outcome.
- Trusting "sure tips" and fixed matches. Anyone selling guaranteed Medeama results or "fixed" scores on WhatsApp or Telegram is running a scam. Walk away.
- Chasing losses with bigger accas. Bigger slips mean bigger margins, not better chances.
- Using one bookmaker only. Small price differences add up fast over a season.
- Forgetting the draw. Low-scoring leagues produce lots of draws. Price them honestly.
Betting on Medeama with crypto
Some Ghanaian punters use crypto sportsbooks such as Cloudbet, paying in USDT or BTC. Coverage of local leagues varies from book to book and week to week, so check which markets it actually lists for the match you want. If you use crypto, remember that the coin's price can move while your bet is open, and stablecoins like USDT avoid most of that swing. And remember again: Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao, not by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.
Is betting on Medeama legal?
Sports betting is legal in Ghana through operators licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under Act 721. You must be 18 or older. Offshore sites are not licensed locally, which means Ghanaian regulators can't help you with complaints. Our page on whether betting is legal in Ghana explains the details.
Tax
The Growth and Sustainability Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1129) removed the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025. Keep records anyway, since winnings may still count as income. See our sports betting tax guide for Ghana.

Questions punters ask
What do Medeama betting odds mean?
They show how much you get back per GH₵1 staked and the chance the bookmaker implies. Divide 1 by the decimal odds to get the implied chance, then remove the margin to get the fair chance.
Are Medeama always favourites at home?
Not always, and being favourite doesn't make a bet good. What matters is whether the odds pay more than the real chance justifies. Popular clubs are often priced too short.
How do I find value on Medeama matches?
Build your own estimate of each outcome, for example with a simple goals model from current home and away form, then compare it with the odds. Only bet when your chance times the odds is clearly above 1.
Is draw no bet a good option on Medeama?
It can be when the draw is a real risk and the DNB price is close to fair. Work out the fair DNB price from the 1X2 odds and compare bookmakers, because small differences matter.
Where is Medeama based?
Medeama SC are based in Tarkwa in Ghana's Western Region. Travel to and from Tarkwa is worth considering when you look at prices.
Can I bet on Medeama with crypto?
Some crypto sportsbooks, such as Cloudbet, cover Ghanaian football, but coverage varies. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.
