how to bet on world cup games - grass football pitch

Chale, the World Cup is the one month when everybody in the trotro, the barbering shop and the family WhatsApp suddenly becomes a football analyst. Every day has three or four matches, and the temptation is to throw a little something on all of them. This page is about how to bet on World Cup games one match at a time: which markets make sense, why tournament football behaves differently from league football, how knockout games actually settle, and how to keep your money alive from the first group game to the final.

18+ only. General information, not betting or financial advice; no result is guaranteed. Betting in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet, which we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana. If betting stops being fun, call the Mental Health Authority on 0800 678 678 or the Gaming Commission on 0800 454 545. If you want the long-range trophy market instead of single matches, see our page on betting on the World Cup winner.

Why World Cup matches are not like Premier League matches

Most betting habits are built on club football: thirty-eight league games, the same teams every week, injury news you can follow daily, and form that runs over months. A World Cup throws a lot of that away. National teams play rarely together, squads are picked only weeks before the tournament, and many players arrive tired after a long club season. Bookmakers know this too, but the public money behaves differently. Millions of casual punters who never bet on a random Tuesday league game suddenly bet on every World Cup fixture, and they mostly back famous names.

That creates three patterns worth understanding before you stake a single cedi:

None of these is a magic system. They are reasons to look at each match on its own instead of pressing "favourite to win" on every slip.

The tournament format and why it matters for your bets

From 2026 the World Cup grew to 48 teams: twelve groups of four, with the top two in each group plus the eight best third-placed teams going into a round of 32, then the usual knockout path to the final. That is 104 matches in total, far more than the old 64.

The bigger field changes the betting picture in practical ways:

The main single-match markets, explained simply

1X2 (match result)

Home win, draw or away win after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. At a World Cup "home" and "away" are usually just labels, because most teams are playing on neutral ground. Don't assume the team listed first has an advantage; check whether either side is a host nation or has a big travelling crowd nearby.

Double chance

Two outcomes in one bet: 1X, X2 or 12. Useful when you think an underdog can avoid defeat but don't trust it to win. The price is lower, so it only makes sense when the bookmaker's double-chance price is fair compared with the separate 1X2 prices.

Draw no bet

You pick a team; if the match is drawn, your stake comes back. It suits tight group openers where a draw is a real possibility but you lean one way.

Asian handicap

The favourite starts with a goal deficit (for example −1.5) or the underdog starts with a head start (+1.5). Quarter lines such as −0.75 split your stake across two lines, so you can win half or lose half. Handicaps are the best tool for those mismatch group games, where backing the favourite to simply win pays almost nothing.

Goals lines (over/under)

Total goals over or under a line such as 2.5. At tournaments, the line is set using team strength and the bookmaker's expectation of how open the game will be. Opening matches and tense final-round games can lean under; mismatches and dead-rubber games can lean over. Our explainer on what under 2.5 means covers the settlement details.

Both teams to score

Yes or no on both sides finding the net. It depends heavily on the weaker team's ability to create chances. Against an elite defence, smaller nations often struggle to score at all.

Player and card markets

First goalscorer, anytime scorer, player shots, cards and corners. Referees at a World Cup come from many different confederations, and their card styles vary. Our pages on betting on yellow cards and betting on corners go deeper.

How knockout games settle: the 90-minute trap

This is the rule that catches more Ghanaian punters than any other. In knockout rounds, most match markets (1X2, handicaps, goals lines, both teams to score) settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time only. Extra time and penalties do not count.

So if you back Team A to win and the game finishes 1–1 after 90 minutes, your bet loses, even if Team A wins in extra time or on penalties. If you want the team that progresses, you need the separate market usually called "to qualify", "to advance" or "to lift the trophy". That market includes extra time and penalties.

What happens"Team A to win" (90 min)"Team A to qualify""Draw" (90 min)
A wins 2–1 in normal timeWinsWinsLoses
1–1 after 90, A wins in extra timeLosesWinsWins
1–1 after 120, A wins on penaltiesLosesWinsWins
B wins in normal timeLosesLosesLoses

Always read the market name on your slip. If it doesn't say "qualify" or "including extra time", assume it is 90 minutes. Rules differ by bookmaker, so check the specific site's football rules before a knockout match.

Reading group-stage motivation before the last round

Group-stage round three is where homework pays most. Before betting, write down each team's points and goal difference, then ask a few simple questions:

  1. Is either team already through? If so, the coach may rest key players to avoid injuries or suspensions. Team news an hour before kick-off matters more than ever.
  2. Does a draw suit both teams? When both sides advance with a point, neither has a strong reason to take risks late on.
  3. Does one team need goals, not just a win? A team chasing goal difference keeps attacking even at 2–0. That can push the total higher.
  4. Are the two games in the group played at the same time? Final group games usually kick off together. Live information from the other match can change behaviour on the pitch.
  5. Who is on a yellow card? Players one booking away from a suspension sometimes play more carefully, or are rested.

None of this tells you the result. It tells you which markets may be mispriced by people who only looked at the team names.

Finding value instead of chasing famous names

Value means the price is bigger than the real chance deserves. You never know the "real" chance for certain, but you can do two cheap things.

Strip the margin. Convert each 1X2 price into a percentage (100 divided by the odds) and add them up. The total above 100% is the bookmaker's margin. Here is an illustrative example:

OutcomeOddsImplied %Margin-free %
Favourite1.6062.5%about 59.0%
Draw3.9025.6%about 24.2%
Underdog5.8017.2%about 16.3%
Total105.3%100%

The margin here is about 5.3%. Divide each implied percentage by 1.053 to get a fairer number. If your own estimate for the underdog is clearly above 16.3%, the underdog price might be value. If it's below, leave it.

Compare prices. World Cup games are some of the most heavily bet matches on earth, so prices across sites are usually close. A small difference still adds up over a month of bets. Check two or three sites before placing anything bigger than pocket money.

Live betting during the tournament

In-play markets move fast at a World Cup because millions of people are watching the same game. A few honest notes:

Our page on sports betting and live odds in Ghana covers how in-play prices move in more detail.

Black Stars games: betting with your heart

When Ghana is playing, the whole country wants to back the Black Stars. That is natural, and a small fun bet on your own team can make the evening sweeter. Just know what is happening to the price. Local bookmakers see a flood of money on Ghana, and they may shorten the Ghana price or lengthen the opponent's to balance their books. That means the Ghana price you see is often a little worse than a neutral estimate would suggest.

Two sensible approaches:

And never bet against your own feelings in a way that will hurt either way. If you can't enjoy a Ghana goal because it costs you money, the bet is too big.

Kick-off times, sleep and bad decisions

Ghana runs on GMT all year. When the tournament is played far from West Africa, many matches land late at night or in the early hours in Accra and Kumasi. Late-night betting is where people make their worst calls: tired, a bit frustrated after an earlier loss, staking more to "fix" the day. Decide your bets for the day before the first match, write them down, and don't add new ones after midnight just because a game is on.

Accumulators across World Cup games

A four-fold of "safe" favourites looks attractive at World Cup time. Here is why it's riskier than it looks. Each leg carries the bookmaker's margin, so a four-leg accumulator multiplies four margins together. Using illustrative numbers, if each leg has a 5% margin, your combined ticket is priced roughly 18–20% below fair. Tournament favourites also slip up more than people remember, especially in openers.

If you enjoy accumulators, keep them small and limited to two or three legs. Use your main bankroll for singles. Our guide to parlay strategy explains the maths with local examples.

A month-long budget plan

A World Cup lasts around five weeks. The biggest mistake is spending most of your budget in the first week. Here is a simple illustrative plan for someone with GH₵1,000 set aside purely for fun:

StageMatches (approx.)Share of budgetAmount
Group round 12420%GH₵200
Group round 22420%GH₵200
Group round 32420%GH₵200
Round of 32 and round of 162420%GH₵200
Quarter-finals to final820%GH₵200

Within each stage, keep single stakes at 2–5% of the whole budget (GH₵20–50 here). You won't bet on every match, and that's the point: pick the games you've actually studied. Any money left at the end of a stage can roll forward, but never top up from your rent or school fees because you ran out early. These figures are an example only; choose an amount you can lose completely without stress.

A pre-match checklist for any World Cup game

  1. Is this a group game or a knockout game? If knockout, does my market include extra time?
  2. Where does each team stand in the group, and what result does each need?
  3. Has the team news come out? Is anyone resting or suspended?
  4. What do the margin-free percentages say, and does my estimate disagree for a real reason?
  5. Have I compared prices on at least two sites?
  6. Is my stake inside today's plan?
  7. Am I betting because I studied this game, or because it's on TV right now?

Funding and withdrawing safely

Locally licensed sites in Ghana usually take mobile money. Offshore sites such as Cloudbet work in cryptocurrency instead, and they are not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, so you have fewer local protections. If you go that route, start small, check the minimum deposit and withdrawal for your coin, and note that Cloudbet's own help pages say withdrawals are typically processed within about 24 hours and that ID checks apply once cumulative deposits reach roughly US$2,200. Our page on World Cup betting with crypto walks through the funding side.

On tax, Ghana removed the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025, but the Ghana Revenue Authority says winnings can still count as income on your annual return. See our sports betting tax page for the details, and confirm with GRA if your amounts are significant.

Staying in control during a football-mad month

A tournament packs a whole season's worth of excitement into a few weeks. Set a deposit limit on every site before the opener. Take at least one full day off betting each week, even if there are matches on. Don't borrow, and don't chase. Quick FAQ

Do World Cup knockout bets include extra time? Usually not. Most match markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Look for "to qualify" or "to advance" if you want extra time and penalties included.

What is the best market for World Cup group games? There is no single best one. Handicaps suit mismatches, draw no bet suits tight openers, and goals lines suit games where you have a clear view on how open the match will be.

Are favourites safe at the World Cup? No. Famous teams lose or draw in group games more often than casual punters expect, and their prices are often shortened by public money.

Can I bet on World Cup games legally in Ghana? Gaming Commission-licensed operators can offer football betting in Ghana. Offshore sites may be reachable but are not locally licensed. Read our page on whether betting is legal in Ghana.

How much should I bet per match? Only what fits your plan. Small single stakes of 2–5% of a fun budget are a common rule of thumb.

My take

Betting on World Cup games is most fun when you treat it like the tournament itself: a long journey, not a single night. Learn the 90-minute rule for knockouts, read the group table before round three, strip the margin before you call anything value, and keep Black Stars bets small and joyful. Spread your budget over the whole month, skip games you haven't studied, and log off when the night gets late. Do that, and whatever happens on the pitch, you'll still be in the game for the final.
