You open a match on an American-style sportsbook, maybe an NBA game or an NFL line, and instead of the decimal odds you see on most Ghanaian apps, there is a number like -250. Chale, it is not a typo and it is not a negative payout. It is American odds, and once you know the trick it takes about five seconds to read. This page explains exactly what minus 250 means in betting, how to turn it into the decimal odds you are used to, what it says about the chance of winning, and why a "-250 lock" can still empty your wallet.

The short answer
-250 means you must stake 250 to win 100 in profit. The minus sign tells you the side is the favourite. Your stake comes back on top of the profit, so a winning 250 bet returns 350 in total.
It works with any currency and any amount. The ratio is what matters: at -250, every 2.5 units you stake earns 1 unit of profit if the bet wins.
| Your stake at -250 | Profit if it wins | Total returned |
|---|---|---|
| GH₵10 | GH₵4 | GH₵14 |
| GH₵25 | GH₵10 | GH₵35 |
| GH₵50 | GH₵20 | GH₵70 |
| GH₵100 | GH₵40 | GH₵140 |
| GH₵250 | GH₵100 | GH₵350 |
-250 in decimal odds
Most Ghanaian bookmakers show decimal odds, so here is the conversion. For a negative American number, decimal = 1 + (100 ÷ 250) = 1.40. That is the exact same bet. A GH₵50 stake at 1.40 returns GH₵70, just as in the table above.
The general rules:
- Negative American odds (favourite): decimal = 1 + 100 ÷ (the number without the minus).
- Positive American odds (underdog): decimal = 1 + (the number ÷ 100). So +250 is 3.50.
- Going back from decimal to American: if decimal is below 2.00, American = −100 ÷ (decimal − 1). If it is 2.00 or more, American = (decimal − 1) × 100.
Watch the sign. -250 and +250 look similar but they are opposites: -250 pays GH₵40 profit on GH₵100, +250 pays GH₵250 profit on GH₵100.
Conversion table for common American odds
| American | Decimal | Implied chance | Profit on GH₵100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| -400 | 1.25 | 80.0% | GH₵25 |
| -300 | 1.33 | 75.0% | GH₵33.33 |
| -250 | 1.40 | 71.4% | GH₵40 |
| -200 | 1.50 | 66.7% | GH₵50 |
| -150 | 1.67 | 60.0% | GH₵66.67 |
| -110 | 1.91 | 52.4% | GH₵90.91 |
| +150 | 2.50 | 40.0% | GH₵150 |
| +250 | 3.50 | 28.6% | GH₵250 |
Keep the -110 row in mind too. It is the standard price on point spreads and totals in American sports, and it is why you hear that you need to win about 52.4% of those bets just to break even.
What -250 says about the chance of winning
Implied probability is the chance the price suggests. For negative odds: 250 ÷ (250 + 100) = 71.4%. In plain terms, the bookmaker is pricing this side as winning about seven times out of ten.
That number is not the "true" chance. It includes the bookmaker's margin. To see it, look at the other side of the same market. Suppose (illustrative numbers) a game is priced Team A -250 and Team B +200:
- Team A -250 → 71.4%
- Team B +200 → 100 ÷ 300 = 33.3%
- Total = 104.8%. The extra 4.8% is the margin, sometimes called the vig or juice.
Strip the margin out by dividing each side by 1.048 and you get a "fair" estimate of about 68.2% for Team A and 31.8% for Team B. In fair American odds, Team A would be roughly -214, not -250. So when you back the favourite at -250 you are paying for the margin too, just as you would on any other price.
Is -250 a good bet?
It depends only on one question: is the real chance higher than 71.4%? If you could somehow know that Team A wins 75% of the time, then over many GH₵100 bets you would average 0.75 × GH₵40 − 0.25 × GH₵100 = +GH₵5 per bet. If the real chance is 70%, the same bet averages 0.70 × GH₵40 − 0.30 × GH₵100 = −GH₵2. A difference of five percentage points flips a slightly good bet into a slightly bad one.
That is the uncomfortable truth about heavy favourites. The price leaves you very little room for error, and being "right" about the favourite winning is not enough. You have to be right more often than 71.4% of the time, every time, at that price.
Why -250 favourites feel safe and are not
A 71% chance sounds strong. But it also means losing about three times in ten. If you bet five independent -250 favourites, each priced fairly at 71.4%, the chance they all win is only about 18.6%. In other words, around four times in five, at least one of the five loses.
And one loss hurts. At -250, a single losing GH₵100 bet wipes out the profit from two and a half winning GH₵100 bets. Lose one in three and you are behind. This is how people who "only bet favourites" end up confused about where their money went.

Putting -250 favourites into an accumulator
Ghanaian punters love the multi-bet, so here is the maths. Three -250 legs combined give decimal odds of 1.40 × 1.40 × 1.40 = about 2.74, so GH₵100 returns about GH₵274. Tempting. But if each leg is a genuine 71.4% chance, all three win only about 36.4% of the time, and the margin on each leg multiplies through the bet. More legs mean more margin, not less risk. If you are keen on combining favourites, read our underdog guide for the other side of the story: sometimes the value is on the team nobody fancies.
Where you will see -250
- Moneylines in American sports: NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL games, where the moneyline is simply who wins.
- Tennis and MMA on US-facing books, where a clear favourite is often in this range.
- Props and specials, for example "over 0.5 goals" or a player to score at least once in a basketball quarter.
- Football (soccer) on American-style sites: a big club at home to a weaker side might be quoted around -250 on the three-way result, which is 1.40 in decimal.
Most international sportsbooks, including crypto books, let you switch the odds display between decimal, fractional and American in the settings. If American numbers confuse you, switch to decimal, the format you already use. The bet and the payout do not change.
-250 on the moneyline vs on the spread
In American sports there are two ways to back a favourite. The moneyline at -250 asks only that the team wins. The point spread, for example -6.5 at -110, asks the team to win by more than 6.5 points but pays much better. Neither is automatically smarter. The moneyline protects you against a narrow win; the spread pays more but adds the risk of a close game. Compare the implied chances on both and decide which price looks wrong, not which one feels safer. For NBA specifically, our NBA crypto betting guide shows how those markets fit together.
Live betting and moving prices
If a team starts at -250 and scores early, the in-play price might jump to -600 or more. If it goes behind, the same team might drift to +120. Prices move as the chance changes. Two warnings for live bettors: first, the margin on live markets is often higher than pre-match; second, the stream you watch may be several seconds behind the action the bookmaker is pricing. Our live odds guide goes deeper.
A two-minute routine for any American odds
- Read the sign. Minus means favourite, plus means underdog.
- Convert to decimal (or switch the display) so you think in the format you know.
- Work out the implied chance and ask if you honestly believe the real chance is higher.
- Check the other side of the market to see how big the margin is.
- Decide your stake in cedis before you click, and never raise it to win back a loss.
Common mix-ups
- "-250 means I lose 250." No. It means you risk 250 to win 100. Your loss is limited to your stake.
- "-250 is a 25% chance." No. It is about 71.4%. The number is a payout ratio, not a percentage.
- "A bigger minus number is a bigger payout." The opposite. -400 pays less than -250 because the team is more heavily favoured.
- "Favourites at -250 are safe to stake big." Big stakes on short prices are exactly how one upset does real damage.
My take
Minus 250 is simple: stake 2.5 to win 1, decimal 1.40, about a 71% implied chance. The skill is not reading it, it is deciding whether that price is too short. Short favourites can be fine bets when your own estimate is clearly higher, but they are never free money.
