Ask any Ghanaian football fan about the Africa Cup of Nations and you'll hear about 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982, the four times the Black Stars lifted the trophy. Ever since, every tournament brings the same hope, and plenty of punters back Ghana to win it "because this time is different". Backing your country is natural, my brother, but an outright bet is still a bet, and it has some of the biggest margins in football. In this guide I'll explain how AFCON winner odds work, how to turn a team's path into a fair price, which other tournament markets exist, and how to avoid the classic outright mistakes.

All odds and percentages below are illustrative examples worked out with simple maths, not live prices or predictions for any team, including Ghana. How AFCON works, in betting terms
- 24 teams reach the finals after a qualifying campaign. Make sure Ghana has actually qualified before backing them in the finals market; some bookmakers price the next edition before qualifying is finished.
- Group stage: six groups of four. The top two in each group plus the four best third-placed teams go through, so 16 of the 24 reach the knockouts.
- Knockouts: round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. Matches level after 90 minutes go to extra time and penalties.
- What an outright bet pays on: the team that lifts the trophy, however it gets there, including penalties.
- Timing: the tournament has been held at different times of year in different editions. The 2027 finals are scheduled to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania; always check CAF's official dates before betting long-term.
- History: Egypt hold the record for most titles. Ghana's four titles, the last in 1982, make the Black Stars one of the most successful nations in the competition, which is part of why Ghanaian punters back them so readily.
Reading an AFCON winner board
Outright odds show the price of each team to win the whole tournament. Here's a made-up board for the top 13 teams:
| Team (example) | Odds | Implied chance |
|---|---|---|
| Team A | 5.00 | 20.0% |
| Team B | 6.00 | 16.7% |
| Team C | 7.00 | 14.3% |
| Team D | 8.00 | 12.5% |
| Team E | 9.00 | 11.1% |
| Team F | 11.00 | 9.1% |
| Team G | 13.00 | 7.7% |
| Team H | 15.00 | 6.7% |
| Team I | 17.00 | 5.9% |
| Team J | 21.00 | 4.8% |
| Team K | 26.00 | 3.8% |
| Team L | 34.00 | 2.9% |
| Team M | 41.00 | 2.4% |
Those 13 teams alone add up to 117.9%, and there are still 11 more teams to price. A full outright book can easily reach 130% to 140%. Compare that with a typical single match at 104% to 106%. The margin on outrights is several times bigger, which means you need a much bigger edge to make an outright bet worthwhile.
To find fair chances, add up every team's implied chance and divide each one by the total. If the whole book totals 135%, a team at 13.00 (7.7% implied) is really being rated at about 5.7%. Our odds calculator handles the conversion, and our guide on how betting odds work explains it step by step.
Turning a team's path into a fair price
The best way to judge an outright price is to break the tournament into steps. A winner has to get out of the group and then win four knockout matches in a row. Multiply the chance of each step and you get the chance of winning the trophy.
| Step | Strong contender | Solid side | Outsider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Out of the group | 90% | 85% | 75% |
| Win round of 16 | 65% | 60% | 50% |
| Win quarter-final | 60% | 55% | 45% |
| Win semi-final | 55% | 50% | 45% |
| Win final | 50% | 48% | 45% |
| Chance to win AFCON | 9.65% | 6.73% | 3.42% |
| Fair odds | 10.4 | 14.9 | 29.3 |
Look at the "strong contender" column. Even with 90% to get out of the group and better than even in every knockout, the team wins the tournament less than one time in ten. That's the nature of knockout football: four coin-flip-ish games in a row are hard to win. Knockout matches between good African sides are often tight, and penalty shootouts add even more randomness.
Now compare the "solid side" fair price of 14.9 with what you're offered:
| Offered odds | Your chance | Average return |
|---|---|---|
| 13.00 | 6.73% | −12.5% |
| 17.00 | 6.73% | +14.4% |
| 21.00 | 6.73% | +41.3% |
The same team, the same view, but a completely different bet depending on the price. That's why you shop around and why timing matters (more on that below).
Thinking honestly about Ghana's chances
Here's the uncomfortable bit for a Ghanaian punter. When you're a fan, every step on that table feels more likely than it is. You remember the great nights and forget the group-stage exits. To keep yourself honest:
- Use evidence, not memories. Look at recent competitive results, not friendlies and not what happened decades ago.
- Check the squad. Who is fit, who is playing regularly for their club, and who is the coach?
- Look at the draw. A group with two strong teams lowers the chance of topping it, which can mean a tougher route in the round of 16.
- Write your numbers down before looking at the odds. Then compare. If you only look at Ghana's price and think "that's big", you'll talk yourself into it.
Our guide on how to bet on underdogs covers the mindset of backing teams the market doesn't fancy, which applies when Ghana are a medium-priced outsider.
Other AFCON tournament markets
| Market | What it pays on | Why use it |
|---|---|---|
| To reach the final | The team plays in the final | Shorter odds than winning; one fewer step |
| To reach the semi-finals / quarter-finals | The team gets at least that far | Lower risk version of an outright |
| Stage of elimination | The exact round the team goes out | Bigger odds, very specific |
| Group winner | The team finishes first in its group | Settled within days, smaller margin |
| To qualify from group | The team reaches the round of 16 | Remember four third-placed teams also go through |
| Top scorer (Golden Boot) | The player with most goals | Dead-heat rules usually apply |
| Top-scoring team, player to score in final, etc. | Various specials | Read rules carefully; margins vary |
Using the "solid side" path above, the chance of reaching the quarter-finals is 0.85 × 0.60 = 51% (fair odds about 1.96), and the chance of reaching the final is 0.85 × 0.60 × 0.55 × 0.50 = 14.0% (fair odds about 7.13). You can check any "to reach" price against your own steps the same way.
Group winner odds: a smaller, quicker market
Group winner markets settle after three matches and usually carry a lower margin than the outright. Here's a made-up four-team group:
| Team | Odds | Fair chance (margin removed) | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team 1 | 2.10 | 45.0% | 2.22 |
| Team 2 | 3.00 | 31.5% | 3.17 |
| Team 3 | 5.50 | 17.2% | 5.82 |
| Team 4 | 15.00 | 6.3% | 15.87 |
This book totals 105.8%, much closer to a single match. If you have a strong view on a team, the group market can be a better place to express it than the full outright. Check how the bookmaker settles ties on points (most follow the official tournament tie-breakers).
Top scorer bets and dead heats
The Golden Boot is a popular AFCON bet, but two rules catch people out:
- Dead heats: if two players finish level on goals, your stake is usually split. A GH₵10 bet at 15.00 on a player who ties for top scorer with one other player typically pays as GH₵5 at 15.00 = GH₵75, not GH₵150.
- Tie-breakers: the official award may use assists or minutes played to separate players, but many bookmakers ignore that and use dead-heat rules. Read the rules first.
Top scorers usually come from teams that go deep in the tournament, because they play more matches. A striker on a team that's likely to exit early has fewer chances to score, so long odds on him are not always value.
When to place an AFCON outright bet
Timing can matter as much as the pick.
- Long before the tournament: prices can be bigger, but you carry more risk: injuries, coach changes, even qualification. Your money is also tied up for months.
- After the draw: you know the group and the likely knockout route. This is often the best moment to judge a path properly.
- After the group stage: fewer teams, more information, but prices on the strong performers will have shortened.
- Match by match: instead of an outright, back the team in each match only when the price is right. Margins are much smaller.
If you want to bet early, keep stakes small. A bet placed months ahead has more time for things to go wrong that you can't control.
Hedging an outright: the maths
Say you put GH₵50 on a team at 21.00 before the tournament, and they reach the final. Your bet would return GH₵1,050 if they win. The opponent in the final is priced at 1.90.
If you back the opponent with GH₵552.63 at 1.90, you lock in the same profit either way:
- Your team wins: GH₵1,050 − GH₵50 − GH₵552.63 = +GH₵447.37.
- Opponent wins: GH₵552.63 × 0.90 profit = GH₵497.37, minus the original GH₵50 = +GH₵447.37.
Hedging gives up some potential profit in exchange for certainty. Whether to do it depends on how much the money matters to you. Some bookmakers also offer cash-out on outrights, but the cash-out figure usually includes an extra margin, so compare it with a manual hedge.

Black Stars matches during the tournament
Many punters prefer to bet Ghana game by game instead of backing them to win it all. That lets you react to form, injuries and the draw. Our guide on how to bet on a football game covers single-match betting, and our types of betting guide explains handicaps, double chance and goals markets you can use on tight tournament matches.
Tournament matches in Africa often feature heat, humidity and tight, cagey games, especially in the knockout stage. Unders and draws at 90 minutes are worth considering, but always check the prices against your own estimates.
Outright accumulators and specials
Some bookmakers let you combine outrights, like "Team X to win AFCON and Team Y to win the Champions League". These look attractive but stack two big margins on top of each other. If each book has a 30% margin, the combined bet is heavily against you. Keep outright bets as singles.
Specials like "Ghana to reach the semi-finals and player Z to score three or more goals" can be correlated (if Ghana go deep, their strikers play more games), and bookmakers price that in. Don't assume a special is value just because it combines two things you believe.
Staking an AFCON outright
Treat outrights as a small slice of your betting budget. A sensible rule: no more than 1–2% of your bankroll on any one outright, and no more than 5% across the whole tournament's outrights. With a GH₵1,000 bankroll, that's GH₵10–GH₵20 per outright and GH₵50 in total. Outrights tie your money up for weeks and lose most of the time, even when well chosen.
Common AFCON betting mistakes
- Betting with your heart. Backing Ghana because you want them to win isn't the same as backing them because the price is right.
- Ignoring the margin. A 130%+ book means most outright prices are poor value.
- Backing before qualification is settled. Check the rules on what happens if a team doesn't qualify.
- Forgetting penalties. Knockouts can be decided by shootouts; that adds randomness to every outright.
- Big outright accas. Margins multiply.
- Buying "sure" AFCON tips. Nobody knows who'll win. Paid "fixed" tips are scams.
Betting on AFCON with crypto
Crypto sportsbooks such as Cloudbet usually offer AFCON outrights and match markets; check which ones it lists when the tournament is near. For long-term bets, think about coin volatility: a stablecoin like USDT keeps the value of your stake steady, while BTC or ETH can move a lot over weeks. Our guide to tournament betting with crypto covers this in more detail. Cloudbet holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.
Is it legal to bet on AFCON from Ghana?
Yes, through operators licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under Act 721, for people aged 18 and over. Offshore sites are not licensed locally, so Ghanaian regulators can't help with disputes. Read our page on whether betting is legal in Ghana.
Tax
The Growth and Sustainability Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1129) removed the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025. Keep records in case winnings count as income. See our sports betting tax guide for Ghana.
Your AFCON outright checklist
- Has the team qualified, and do I know the bookmaker's rules if not?
- Have I broken the tournament into steps and multiplied the chances?
- Is the offered price clearly bigger than my fair price?
- Have I compared at least two bookmakers?
- Would a group or "to reach" market express my view with less margin?
- Is the stake small enough that I won't care if it loses?
- Am I betting with my head, not just my Black Stars heart?

Questions punters ask
What are AFCON winner odds?
They are prices for each team to win the whole Africa Cup of Nations. Divide 1 by the decimal odds for the implied chance, then remove the margin, which is often very large on outrights.
How many times has Ghana won AFCON?
Ghana have won the Africa Cup of Nations four times: 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982.
Does an AFCON outright bet count penalties?
Yes. An outright winner bet pays on the team that lifts the trophy, including wins after extra time or penalties.
How do I work out a fair price for a team to win AFCON?
Estimate the chance of getting out of the group and winning each knockout round, multiply them together, and take 1 divided by the result as the fair odds.
When is the best time to bet on the AFCON winner?
Many bettors wait until after the draw, when the group and likely route are known. Earlier prices can be bigger but carry more risk from injuries and coach changes.
What happens to top scorer bets if players tie?
Most bookmakers use dead-heat rules, so your stake is split between the tied players. Check the bookmaker's rules first.
