Chale, over 1.5 goals is probably the most popular "safe" bet on Ghanaian slips. You don't need to pick a winner, you just need two goals between both teams, and the odds look short enough to feel like a banker. But short odds aren't the same as a safe bet. A 1.25 price only pays if the game really has more than an 80% chance of two goals, and plenty of matches don't. This guide shows you how to think about over 1.5 properly: what the real chances look like, which games tend to fit and which don't, how live prices move, and why stacking five over 1.5 legs in one accumulator is a slow way to lose money. Let me help you out.
18+ only. This is general information, not a promise of winnings. Every number in this guide is an illustrative example worked out with a simple model, not a prediction for a real match. Over 1.5 goals in one minute
- Over 1.5 goals wins if the match ends with two or more goals in total, from either or both teams. 1-1, 2-0, 0-2 and 3-2 all win. 0-0, 1-0 and 0-1 lose.
- There is no half goal, so there's never a push or a refund. It either wins or loses.
- Most bookmakers settle it on normal time: 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties don't count unless the market says so.
- Typical prices sit somewhere between about 1.15 and 1.60, depending on how many goals the bookmaker expects.
- The bet only makes sense when your honest estimate of the chance is higher than the chance the odds imply.
What the odds are really telling you
Divide 1 by the decimal odds and you get the chance the bookmaker is pricing in. For over 1.5, small changes in price mean big changes in what you need:
| Over 1.5 odds | Chance needed to break even | Profit on a GH₵50 stake |
|---|---|---|
| 1.15 | 87.0% | GH₵7.50 |
| 1.20 | 83.3% | GH₵10.00 |
| 1.25 | 80.0% | GH₵12.50 |
| 1.30 | 76.9% | GH₵15.00 |
| 1.35 | 74.1% | GH₵17.50 |
| 1.40 | 71.4% | GH₵20.00 |
| 1.50 | 66.7% | GH₵25.00 |
Read the 1.20 row again. To make money at 1.20 you need a game where two goals happen more than 5 times in 6. When it fails, you lose GH₵50 to win GH₵10, so one bad result wipes out five good ones. That's the hidden cost of short prices. You can check any price quickly with our odds calculator.
How likely is two or more goals, really?
Goals in football are rare and fairly random, which is why analysts often use a simple statistical tool called the Poisson model. You only need one number: the total goals you expect in the match (called the goal expectation). The model turns that into a chance of 0, 1, 2, 3 or more goals.
| Expected total goals | Chance of over 1.5 | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|
| 1.8 | 53.7% | 1.86 |
| 2.0 | 59.4% | 1.68 |
| 2.2 | 64.5% | 1.55 |
| 2.4 | 69.2% | 1.45 |
| 2.6 | 73.3% | 1.36 |
| 2.8 | 76.9% | 1.30 |
| 3.0 | 80.1% | 1.25 |
| 3.2 | 82.9% | 1.21 |
This is the most useful table on the page. A 1.25 price is only fair when you expect about three goals in the game. That's a high-scoring fixture by most standards. If you think a match is more of a 2.2-goal game, a tight league fixture between two careful sides, the fair price is around 1.55, and taking 1.25 is a bad deal no matter how "sure" it feels.
Real football isn't perfectly Poisson. Draws like 0-0 and 1-1 happen a bit more often than the simple model says, and red cards, injuries and game state change scoring rates. Treat the table as a guide to the size of the chances, not an exact answer.
What the full goals picture looks like
It helps to see where the losses come from. Here's the spread of total goals for two example match types:
| Total goals | 2.2-goal match | 2.6-goal match |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 11.1% | 7.4% |
| 1 | 24.4% | 19.3% |
| 2 | 26.8% | 25.1% |
| 3 | 19.7% | 21.8% |
| 4 | 10.8% | 14.1% |
| 5 or more | 7.2% | 12.3% |
Notice that the single-goal game is the real enemy. In the 2.2-goal match, almost one game in four ends with exactly one goal. A 1-0 home win is one of the most common scorelines in football, and it kills every over 1.5 ticket. A goalless draw is less common than people fear, but the 1-0 is always lurking.
Comparing over 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5
Using the same model, here's how the goal lines line up for the two example matches:
| Line | 2.2-goal match: chance | Fair odds | 2.6-goal match: chance | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Over 0.5 | 88.9% | 1.12 | 92.6% | 1.08 |
| Over 1.5 | 64.5% | 1.55 | 73.3% | 1.36 |
| Over 2.5 | 37.7% | 2.65 | 48.2% | 2.08 |
| Over 3.5 | 18.1% | 5.54 | 26.4% | 3.79 |
Moving from over 1.5 to over 2.5 roughly halves your chance but more than doubles your profit when it lands. Neither line is better by nature. What matters is whether the price on that line is bigger than your estimate. If you want the flip side of these markets, our guide to what under 2.5 means in betting covers the under bets.
Building a simple goals estimate
You don't need a supercomputer to estimate expected goals for a match. A rough method that many punters use:
- Find the league's average home goals and away goals per game over a decent sample, ideally a full season or more.
- Work out each team's attack strength: their goals scored per game divided by the league average for home or away games.
- Work out each team's defence weakness the same way, using goals conceded.
- Home expected goals = league home average × home attack × away defence. Away expected goals = league away average × away attack × home defence.
- Add the two for total expected goals, then read off the table above.
Here are three made-up examples to show how it works:
| Example | Home xG | Away xG | Total | Over 1.5 chance | Fair odds | Value at 1.30? | Value at 1.45? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Strong home attack vs leaky away defence | 1.85 | 0.90 | 2.75 | 76.0% | 1.32 | No (−1.3%) | Yes (+10.1%) |
| Cagey derby, two good defences | 1.10 | 0.80 | 1.90 | 56.6% | 1.77 | No (−26.4%) | No (−17.9%) |
| Two open, attacking sides | 1.60 | 1.30 | 2.90 | 78.5% | 1.27 | Yes (+2.1%) | Yes (+13.9%) |
The derby row is the classic trap. Big rivalries feel exciting, so people assume goals, but when both teams are scared to lose, the chance of two goals can be little better than a coin flip. At 1.30 you'd be giving away more than a quarter of your stake on average.
Adjust your numbers for things the averages miss: key strikers injured or suspended, a team resting players before a cup game, heavy rain on a poor pitch, a side that only needs a draw, or the last day of a season when one team has nothing to play for. Then be humble. Your estimate will often be wrong by a few percent, so only bet when the gap between your chance and the price is clear.
Signs a match may fit over 1.5, and signs it may not
| Leans towards goals | Leans against goals |
|---|---|
| Both teams score and concede regularly | Both teams have tight defences and blunt attacks |
| A big favourite at home against a weak side | A derby or relegation battle where a draw suits both |
| Both sides need a win | One side is happy with a point and parks the bus |
| Good weather and a decent pitch | Heavy rain, a waterlogged or bumpy pitch |
| Full-strength attacks | First-choice striker or creator missing |
| Leagues known for open games (check the data) | Leagues or competitions known for low scores (check the data) |
Don't take any league's reputation on trust. Some leagues, including parts of African domestic football, can run lower-scoring than the big European leagues in some seasons, and others swing from year to year. Look at recent goals-per-game numbers before you decide a league is a "goals league".
Live over 1.5: how the clock eats your chance
Once a match starts, the chance of two goals drops every minute nothing happens. Here's an example for a match that started as a 2.6-goal game, assuming goals come at a steady rate (real matches tend to have slightly more goals late on, so treat this as a rough guide):
| Minute | Goals still expected | At 0-0: chance of over 1.5 | Fair odds | At 1-0: chance of over 1.5 | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 2.02 | 60.0% | 1.67 | 86.8% | 1.15 |
| 30 | 1.73 | 51.7% | 1.93 | 82.3% | 1.21 |
| 45 | 1.30 | 37.3% | 2.68 | 72.7% | 1.37 |
| 60 | 0.87 | 21.5% | 4.64 | 58.0% | 1.73 |
| 70 | 0.58 | 11.5% | 8.72 | 43.9% | 2.28 |
| 80 | 0.29 | 3.4% | 28.99 | 25.1% | 3.99 |
Two lessons. First, a goalless first half turns your 1.36 bet into roughly a 37% shot, so live prices around 2.60 to 2.70 at half-time are about fair, not a gift. Second, an early goal changes everything: at 1-0 after 20 minutes you only need one more goal in 70 minutes. If you like over 1.5 in a match, some punters wait to see the first 15 to 20 minutes, because a fast start shows up in the price and a dull start gives you a bigger price on the same idea. Neither approach is magic; you're just choosing when to buy.
Live markets move fast, odds can be suspended after dangerous attacks, and streams on phones can run behind the real action. Never chase losses live. Our guide to live betting with crypto covers the practical side.

Over 1.5 accumulators: the slow leak
The favourite Ghanaian slip is five or six over 1.5 legs at about 1.25 each, sold as "sure odds". Here's what the maths says, assuming each leg genuinely has a 78% chance, which is already generous at that price:
| Legs | Combined odds | Chance all win | Average return per GH₵1 staked |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1.56 | 60.8% | −4.9% |
| 3 | 1.95 | 47.5% | −7.3% |
| 4 | 2.44 | 37.0% | −9.6% |
| 5 | 3.05 | 28.9% | −11.9% |
| 6 | 3.81 | 22.5% | −14.1% |
Each leg is a small losing bet, and the losses multiply. A six-leg "banker" slip loses more than three times out of four. It feels safe because each game looks easy, but the slip as a whole is a long shot. If you can't find a single over 1.5 leg with clear value on its own, joining several together won't create value. You can test your own slips with our accumulator calculator.
Variations worth knowing
- First-half over 1.5. Much harder. In a 2.6-goal match with about 45% of goals before the break, the first half expects around 1.17 goals, so over 1.5 in the first half is only about 32.7% likely (fair odds about 3.06).
- Team over 1.5. One team must score two or more on its own. This suits a strong home favourite against a weak defence, but the chance is far lower than match over 1.5.
- Over 1.5 and both teams to score. Combined markets sound attractive, but the two parts overlap. A 1-1 wins both, a 2-0 wins only the over. Bookmakers price these combos with their own margin, so compare with the separate prices.
- Asian goal lines. Lines like 1.75 or 2.0 split or refund your stake on certain results. A 2.0 line refunds on exactly two goals. Check the rules on the slip before you bet.
A worked example
Say you look at a made-up league match. Your goals estimate gives 1.85 for the home side and 0.90 for the away side: 2.75 in total, so about a 76% chance of over 1.5 and a fair price near 1.32.
- Bookmaker A offers 1.28. That implies 78.1%, more than your 76%. No bet.
- Bookmaker B offers 1.36. That implies 73.5%. Your edge is 76.0% × 1.36 − 1 = about +3.4%. Small, but positive.
- Then you check team news: the home side's top scorer is out. You knock home expected goals down to 1.60, total 2.50, chance about 71.3%. At 1.36 that's now about −3.0%. No bet.
That last step is the whole game. Most of your profit or loss comes from the details you check after the first impression.
A simple staking plan
Over 1.5 bets win often but lose big compared with what they pay, so stake sizing matters. A sensible approach is a fixed budget for the month and flat stakes of 1% to 2% of it per bet.
| Monthly budget | Flat stake (2%) | Profit at 1.35 if it wins | Loss if it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| GH₵500 | GH₵10 | GH₵3.50 | GH₵10 |
| GH₵1,000 | GH₵20 | GH₵7.00 | GH₵20 |
| GH₵2,500 | GH₵50 | GH₵17.50 | GH₵50 |
Keep a simple record: date, match, your estimate, the price you took and the result. After 50 or 100 bets you'll see whether your estimates are any good. Our guide to value betting goes deeper on judging prices.
Common mistakes with over 1.5
- Calling it a banker. No football bet is certain. One in four or five over 1.5 bets can easily fail.
- Paying for "sure" tips. Telegram and WhatsApp groups selling "100% over 1.5" or "fixed" games are scams. Nobody honest can sell certainty.
- Ignoring the price. The same pick can be a good bet at 1.40 and a bad one at 1.22.
- Trusting reputations. "Big team at home" doesn't automatically mean goals. Some favourites win 1-0 week after week.
- Adding legs to boost odds. Every extra leg adds margin and risk.
- Forgetting settlement rules. Check whether extra time counts and what happens if a match is abandoned.
Betting with crypto
Cloudbet, the sportsbook we link to, takes crypto such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT rather than cedis or mobile money. That brings extra things to think about: coin prices move, network fees apply, and sending to the wrong address can't be undone. If you'd rather avoid price swings, a stablecoin like USDT keeps your balance closer to dollar value. Remember again that Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao, not by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, so local complaint routes won't cover it. Read more about the legal position in our guide on whether betting is legal in Ghana.
Tax on winnings
Ghana's Growth and Sustainability Levy (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1129) removed the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025. Winnings may still count as income for your annual tax return, so keep records. See our sports betting tax guide for Ghana for the details.
Your over 1.5 checklist
- Have I estimated expected goals for both teams, not just guessed?
- Is my chance clearly higher than 1 ÷ odds?
- Have I checked team news, weather and what each side needs from the game?
- Have I compared prices with at least one other bookmaker?
- Is this a single, or a short acca where every leg is value on its own?
- Is the stake inside my budget, and will I record the bet?
Bet responsibly
Over 1.5 goals can be a sensible market when you respect the price, but it's still gambling and most people who bet lose money over time. Only bet what you can afford to lose, set limits before you start and take breaks. If betting stops being fun, causes stress or affects money you need for rent, school fees or food, talk to someone. Questions punters ask
What does over 1.5 goals mean?
It means the match must finish with two or more goals in total. 1-1, 2-0 and 3-1 win; 0-0, 1-0 and 0-1 lose. It's usually settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
Is over 1.5 goals a safe bet?
No bet is safe. Over 1.5 wins often, but at short odds one loss can cancel several wins. It only makes sense when the real chance is higher than the price implies.
What odds are fair for over 1.5 goals?
It depends on expected goals. A match expected to have about 2.2 goals has fair odds near 1.55; a 3-goal match is near 1.25.
Does extra time count for over 1.5?
Usually not. Most bookmakers settle goals markets on normal time only. Always check the market rules.
Are over 1.5 accumulators a good idea?
Rarely. Each leg carries a margin, so losses multiply. A six-leg over 1.5 slip at about 1.25 per leg can lose more than three times out of four.
Can I bet over 1.5 live?
Yes. The price drifts out as time passes without goals and shortens sharply after a goal. A goalless first half roughly halves the chance in a typical match.
