My brother, if you've ever looked at a betting app and seen 1.85, 3.40 and 4.20 next to a match and wondered what those numbers really mean, you're not alone. Most people in Ghana learn betting by copying a friend's slip, and many never learn to read odds properly. That costs money, because odds tell you two things at once: how much you'll get paid, and how likely the bookmaker thinks the outcome is. Once you can read both, you'll bet smarter. Let's go step by step.
18+ only. General information, not financial advice. Betting in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet, the crypto sportsbook we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.

The short answer
- Ghanaian betting sites show decimal odds, like 1.85 or 3.40.
- Total return = stake × odds. GH₵10 at 3.40 returns GH₵34 if it wins.
- Profit = return − stake. That GH₵34 return is GH₵24 profit.
- Implied chance = 1 ÷ odds. Odds of 3.40 mean the bookmaker rates it about 29.4% likely.
- Add up the implied chances in a market and you'll get more than 100%. The extra is the bookmaker's margin.
- Lower odds mean more likely but smaller payouts. Higher odds mean less likely but bigger payouts. Neither is automatically better.
Decimal odds: the format you see in Ghana
Decimal odds show the total amount you get back for every GH₵1 staked, including your stake. Odds of 2.00 mean every GH₵1 comes back as GH₵2 if you win: your GH₵1 stake plus GH₵1 profit. Here's how a GH₵10 stake works at different odds:
| Odds | Total return on GH₵10 | Profit | Implied chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.25 | GH₵12.50 | GH₵2.50 | 80.0% |
| 1.50 | GH₵15.00 | GH₵5.00 | 66.7% |
| 1.85 | GH₵18.50 | GH₵8.50 | 54.1% |
| 2.00 | GH₵20.00 | GH₵10.00 | 50.0% |
| 3.40 | GH₵34.00 | GH₵24.00 | 29.4% |
| 5.00 | GH₵50.00 | GH₵40.00 | 20.0% |
| 10.00 | GH₵100.00 | GH₵90.00 | 10.0% |
A trick to remember: odds of 1.25 risk GH₵10 to win only GH₵2.50. That means one loss at 1.25 wipes out four wins. Short odds feel safe, but they leave very little room for error.
Implied probability: what the odds say about chances
Every decimal price hides a percentage. Divide 1 by the odds and multiply by 100. Odds of 1.85 are 1 ÷ 1.85 = 0.541, so about 54.1%. That's the bookmaker's view of the chance, plus its margin.
Why does this matter? Because good betting is about comparing your estimate of the chance with the bookmaker's. If you honestly believe a team wins 50% of the time and the odds are 2.20 (implied 45.5%), the price is in your favour. On a GH₵10 stake, the expected result is 0.50 × 22 − 10 = +GH₵1.00 per bet over the long run. If the odds were 1.80 (implied 55.6%), the same 50% belief gives 0.50 × 18 − 10 = −GH₵1.00. Same team, same match, different decision.
The bookmaker's margin, in plain cedis
Let's read a typical 1X2 line for a football match with made-up prices:
| Outcome | Odds | Implied chance | Fair chance (margin removed) | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (home) | 2.10 | 47.6% | 45.1% | 2.22 |
| X (draw) | 3.30 | 30.3% | 28.7% | 3.49 |
| 2 (away) | 3.60 | 27.8% | 26.3% | 3.81 |
| Total | 105.7% | 100% |
The implied chances add up to 105.7%, so the margin here is about 5.7%. To estimate the "fair" chance, divide each implied chance by the total: 47.6 ÷ 1.057 ≈ 45.1%. The margin is how the bookmaker makes money over time. A site with a lower margin pays you more for the same outcome. That's why comparing odds between two or three sites matters. Our guide to betting sites in Ghana with high odds goes deeper into comparing prices, and the odds calculator does the margin maths for you.
Reading the odds on each common market
1X2 (match result)
Three prices: home win, draw, away win. The favourite has the lowest odds. A draw in football is often priced somewhere around 3.00 to 3.60 in a normal match, higher in a mismatch.
Double chance (1X, 12, X2)
You cover two of the three outcomes. The odds are lower because you're more likely to win. If 1X is 1.30, that's about 76.9% implied. Double chance is useful when you're nervous about a draw, but don't forget the payout is small.
GG/NG (both teams to score)
GG means both teams score at least once. NG means at least one team fails to score. On most slips you'll see two prices, like GG 1.80 and NG 1.95. Add their implied chances (55.6% + 51.3% = 106.9%) and you can see this two-way market's margin is about 6.9% in that example.
Over/under goals
Over 2.5 wins with three or more goals; under 2.5 wins with two or fewer. The ".5" means there's no push. If over 2.5 is 1.75, the book implies about 57.1%.
Handicap (European)
A three-way handicap such as Home (-1) gives the away team a one-goal start. If the home team wins by exactly one, the result is a handicap draw. The odds work exactly like 1X2, just on the adjusted score.
Asian handicap
Asian lines remove the draw and can use quarter lines. Here's how a GH₵20 bet on Home -0.25 at 1.90 works: half your stake goes on 0 (stake back if it's a draw) and half on -0.5 (loses if it's a draw).
| Result | What happens | Net on GH₵20 |
|---|---|---|
| Home wins | Both halves win at 1.90 | +GH₵18 |
| Draw | GH₵10 refunded, GH₵10 lost | −GH₵10 |
| Away wins | Both halves lose | −GH₵20 |
Quarter lines confuse many punters, so always read how your site settles them. Our guide to types of betting in Ghana covers Asian handicaps step by step.
Correct score
Big odds like 7.00 for 1-0 or 13.00 for 2-1. Remember the implied chances: 7.00 is about 14.3%, 13.00 about 7.7%. These markets often carry big margins because there are so many outcomes.
Under and over lines like 0.5, 3.5 and 4.5
Each line moves the odds. Under 0.5 means no goals at all, so it's usually priced high. Over 0.5 means at least one goal, so it's usually priced low. If you're unsure, we have separate guides for under 0.5 and under 2.5.
Accumulators: how total odds are calculated
When you add several selections to one slip, the total odds are the individual odds multiplied together. Three selections at 1.50, 1.60 and 1.80 give 1.50 × 1.60 × 1.80 = 4.32. GH₵10 would return GH₵43.20 if all three win.
Here's what the slip doesn't tell you. Suppose your honest estimates for those three outcomes are 62%, 58% and 52%. The chance all three win is 0.62 × 0.58 × 0.52 ≈ 18.7%. Fair odds for that would be about 5.35, but you're getting 4.32. Expected result on GH₵10: 0.187 × 43.2 − 10 ≈ −GH₵1.92. Each leg adds the bookmaker's margin on top of the others, so the longer the slip, the worse the deal usually gets. Try it in our accumulator calculator.
Some sites add an "accumulator bonus" for slips with many selections. Read the terms: the bonus often needs a minimum number of legs and minimum odds per leg, which nudges you towards longer slips.
Reading your bet slip line by line
Every Ghanaian betting app looks slightly different, but most slips show the same fields:
| Slip field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Selection / pick | The outcome you chose, for example "Home" or "Over 2.5" |
| Odds | The decimal price for that selection |
| Total odds | All selection odds multiplied together (multiples) |
| Stake / amount | How much you're betting, in cedis or your account currency |
| Potential win / payout | Stake × total odds, plus any bonus, before any deductions |
| Bonus | Extra added by a promotion, often with conditions |
| Accept odds changes | Whether the slip goes through if the price changes while you confirm |
| Booking code | A short code to share or load the same selections |
Older Ghanaian slips sometimes showed a tax deduction line. According to the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Income Tax (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act 1129) removed the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025, so that deduction shouldn't appear on winnings settled after that date. Winnings may still count in your annual income tax return. See our sports betting tax guide for detail.
A word on booking codes: they're handy, but loading someone else's code means you're betting their opinion at whatever odds are available now. Always look at each selection and its price before confirming.
Why odds move
Odds are not fixed until you place your bet. They move because of:
- Team news. An injured striker or a rested goalkeeper changes the chances.
- Money. If lots of punters back one side, books shorten its price to balance their risk.
- Sharper information. Professional bettors and big markets move prices quickly when they disagree with a line.
- Live events. During a match, every goal, card and minute changes the odds.
If you see "odds changed" when confirming, the price moved while you were deciding. The "accept odds changes" setting controls whether your bet still goes through. Keeping it off means you confirm each new price yourself, which is safer for careful bettors.
A useful habit: note the odds you got and the odds just before kick-off (the closing odds). If you regularly get better prices than the closing odds, that's a good sign your judgement is beating the market. If you're always getting worse prices, you may be betting too late or following the crowd.
Live odds and suspended markets
In-play odds change fast. When something big might happen, such as a penalty or a VAR check, the book suspends the market, and you'll see the prices greyed out or locked. When the market reopens, the odds have moved. Streams and data feeds can lag behind the real action, so don't assume the price on your screen reflects the very latest moment. Our guide to sports betting and live odds in Ghana covers in-play betting in depth.
Fractional and American odds, quickly
You may meet other formats on international sites or in UK and US media:
| Format | Example | Decimal | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fractional | 5/2 | 3.50 | Win GH₵5 profit for every GH₵2 staked |
| Fractional | 1/2 | 1.50 | Win GH₵1 profit for every GH₵2 staked |
| American | +150 | 2.50 | GH₵150 profit on a GH₵100 stake |
| American | −200 | 1.50 | Stake GH₵200 to make GH₵100 profit |
To turn fractional into decimal, divide the top by the bottom and add 1. For American odds, see our explainer on what -250 means in betting. Most sites, including Cloudbet, let you switch the display format in settings.

Odds on crypto sportsbooks
Crypto books like Cloudbet show the same decimal odds; only the currency changes. If you stake 10 USDT at 2.10, a win returns 21 USDT. To think in cedis, convert at the rate you'd actually get when cashing out, and remember the exchange rate can move between placing a bet and withdrawing. Network fees on deposits and withdrawals also eat into small wins, so they matter more than people expect. Our guide to crypto betting odds explains the extra details.
"High odds" and boosted odds
Sites advertise "high odds" or "boosted odds". Here's how to judge them:
- Compare margins, not one headline price. A site can boost one selection while charging bigger margins elsewhere.
- Check the max stake on boosts. Many boosts have a small maximum stake.
- Look for conditions. Some boosts are paid as free bets or bonus funds, not cash.
- Convert to implied chance. A boost from 2.00 to 2.20 moves the implied chance from 50% to 45.5%. If you think the real chance is about 50%, that's genuine value.
Booking codes and shared slips
Many Ghanaian bookmakers let you save a bet slip as a short booking code and share it with friends on WhatsApp. It's handy, but read the odds again when you load someone else's code. The code stores the selections, not the prices at the moment your friend made it. By the time you load it, some odds may have moved, a match may have started, or a selection may have been removed. The total odds on your screen are the only ones that count.
A quick habit when you load a shared code:
- Check every line: team, market and the price next to it.
- Remove any match that has already kicked off or that you don't understand.
- Look at the new total odds and work out the implied chance (1 divided by the total). A slip at 25.00 is saying about a 4% chance.
- Decide your own stake. A friend's GH₵50 slip doesn't have to be your GH₵50 slip.
Be very careful with codes sold as "sure" or "fixed" slips on social media. Nobody can guarantee a result, and paying for codes is a common scam.
Reading odds on other sports
The same decimal maths works in every sport, but the markets look a little different.
| Sport and market (illustrative) | Prices | Implied chances | Book total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tennis match winner (two-way) | 1.80 / 2.05 | 55.6% / 48.8% | 104.3% |
| Basketball handicap −4.5 / +4.5 | 1.90 / 1.90 | 52.6% / 52.6% | 105.3% |
| Boxing fight winner (two-way) | 1.40 / 3.00 | 71.4% / 33.3% | 104.8% |
A few things to notice. Tennis and basketball handicaps have no draw, so there are only two prices to add up. A "1.90 each way" market like the basketball line tells you the bookmaker sees it as a coin flip and keeps about 5% for itself. In boxing, check how a draw is settled in the two-way market, because rules differ between bookmakers. Whatever the sport, the steps don't change: return = stake × odds, implied chance = 1 ÷ odds, margin = the amount the chances add up to above 100%.
Three quick decisions using the odds
Here's how reading odds turns into real decisions. All numbers are examples.
- Home win at 2.30. That implies about 43.5%. If you honestly rate the home side at 45%, each cedi staked is worth 0.45 × 2.30 = GH₵1.035 on average, a small edge of about 3.5%. Small, but positive.
- Over 2.5 goals at 1.70. That implies about 58.8%. If you think goals come 55% of the time, 0.55 × 1.70 = 0.935, so you'd lose about 6.5 pesewas per cedi on average. Skip it, however exciting the teams look.
- Draw at 3.20. That implies 31.25%. If you rate the draw at 28%, 0.28 × 3.20 = 0.896, about −10%. A price can look big and still be a bad bet.
The point isn't that your guesses are perfect. It's that you can't judge any bet until you've turned the odds into a chance and compared it with your own view.
Common misreadings that cost money
- "Odds of 2.00 means I double my profit." No, you double your stake: GH₵10 becomes GH₵20, which is GH₵10 profit.
- "Low odds are safe." Short odds still lose sometimes, and each loss costs several wins.
- "The favourite always wins." A 1.50 favourite is expected to lose about one in three times.
- "Big total odds mean a good slip." Big total odds usually mean a low chance and a bigger combined margin.
- "Odds dropped, so it's a sure thing." Movement shows where money went, not what will happen.
- Ignoring quarter-line settlement on Asian handicaps and totals.
Practise: test yourself
- You stake GH₵25 at 2.40. What's the total return? Answer: GH₵60, profit GH₵35.
- What chance do odds of 4.00 imply? Answer: 25%.
- A market shows 1.90 and 1.90. What's the margin? Answer: 52.6% + 52.6% = 105.3%, so about 5.3%.
- Three legs at 1.40, 1.50 and 2.00. Total odds? Answer: 4.20.
- Fractional 3/1 in decimal? Answer: 4.00.
If you got these right, you can read odds better than most people in the viewing centre.
A simple routine before each bet
- Decide your own chance for the outcome before you look at the odds.
- Convert the odds to an implied chance.
- Only bet if your chance is clearly higher than the implied chance.
- Check another site's price if you can.
- Use a fixed, small stake, such as 1–2% of your monthly budget.
- Write the bet down with the odds you got.

Questions punters ask
How do you read decimal betting odds in Ghana?
Multiply your stake by the odds to get your total return. GH₵10 at 1.85 returns GH₵18.50, which is GH₵8.50 profit plus your stake.
What does 1.50 odds mean?
Every GH₵1 staked returns GH₵1.50 if you win. The bookmaker rates the outcome at about 66.7% likely.
How do I calculate the bookmaker's margin?
Add up 1 divided by each price in a market. The amount above 100% is the margin.
How are accumulator odds calculated?
Multiply the odds of each selection. Three picks at 1.50, 1.60 and 1.80 give total odds of 4.32.
Is there still a 10% tax on betting winnings in Ghana?
According to the Ghana Revenue Authority, the 10% withholding tax on winnings was removed from 2 April 2025 by Act 1129, though winnings may still count in your annual tax return.
