Every season, lots of punters in Ghana put a few cedis on who will lift the Champions League trophy. It's a fun bet, because you get months of excitement for one small stake. But outright odds are one of the most expensive markets in football, and most people never check what they're actually paying for. In this guide, my brother, I'll explain how Champions League winner odds work, how to turn them into real chances, how the format changes a club's path, and when it actually makes sense to bet on the winner.
18+ only. Everything here is general education, not a tip or a promise of winnings. Clubs on the example board are labelled Club A, Club B and so on, and all odds and percentages are made-up examples worked out with simple maths, not real prices. Betting in Ghana is regulated by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under the Gaming Act 2006 (Act 721). Cloudbet, the crypto sportsbook we link to, holds a Curaçao licence and is not licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana.

What the winner market is
An outright winner bet is simple: you pick the club you think will win the final, and you're paid at the odds you took if they do. Everything else, like how many games they win or how they get there, doesn't matter. The bet settles on whoever lifts the trophy, including extra time and penalties in the final.
This is different from betting on single Champions League matches. If that's what you want, our Champions League betting tips cover match markets like 1X2, goals and two-leg ties. This page is only about the outright.
How the format shapes the odds
Since the 2024–25 season, the Champions League has used a new format. You need to understand it, because it decides how many games a club must survive.
- League phase: 36 clubs sit in one big table. Each club plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away.
- Top 8: go straight into the round of 16.
- 9th to 24th: play a two-legged knockout play-off for the remaining round-of-16 places.
- 25th to 36th: are out.
- Knockouts: the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are two-legged ties. The away goals rule was scrapped from the 2021–22 season, so level ties go to extra time and then penalties.
- Final: a single match at a neutral venue chosen in advance, usually played in late May or early June.
The key point for winner odds: a club that finishes in the top 8 needs to win four knockout ties to lift the trophy. A club that finishes 9th to 24th needs to win five. One extra two-legged tie against a decent opponent makes a real difference to the overall chance. Always check the current season's rules on UEFA's official channels, since details can change.
Reading an outright board
Here's a made-up winner board early in a season. Only the 12 shortest prices are shown. The other 24 clubs are priced from 51 up to 1001.
| Club | Odds | Implied chance | Fair chance (margin removed) | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Club A | 4.50 | 22.2% | 17.5% | 5.7 |
| Club B | 6.00 | 16.7% | 13.1% | 7.6 |
| Club C | 7.00 | 14.3% | 11.2% | 8.9 |
| Club D | 8.00 | 12.5% | 9.8% | 10.2 |
| Club E | 10.0 | 10.0% | 7.9% | 12.7 |
| Club F | 12.0 | 8.3% | 6.6% | 15.2 |
| Club G | 15.0 | 6.7% | 5.2% | 19.1 |
| Club H | 17.0 | 5.9% | 4.6% | 21.6 |
| Club I | 21.0 | 4.8% | 3.7% | 26.7 |
| Club J | 26.0 | 3.8% | 3.0% | 33.0 |
| Club K | 34.0 | 2.9% | 2.3% | 43.2 |
| Club L | 41.0 | 2.4% | 1.9% | 52.1 |
The 12 clubs shown add up to 110.5% on their own. Add the other 24 clubs and the whole board comes to about 127.0%. On a single match, you'd expect the chances to add up to around 105%. Here, the bookmaker has built in roughly 27% across the board. That's why outright markets are expensive: you pay a lot more margin per cedi than on a normal match bet.
To get the fair chances, divide each implied chance by 1.27. This simple method spreads the margin evenly. In real life, bookmakers often load more of the margin onto the long shots, because casual punters love big prices. So a 101 shot is often worse value than it looks, and the favourites may be a little closer to fair. Our odds calculator helps with the conversions, and our guide on how to read betting odds in Ghana covers the basics.
Pricing the path: your own estimate
To judge a winner price, estimate a club's chance in each knockout tie and multiply them together. It's simple and honest, and it forces you to think about every step.
| Scenario | Chance per tie | Chance to win the trophy | Fair odds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elite club, finishes top 8 | R16 72%, QF 62%, SF 55%, final 52% | 12.8% | 7.8 |
| Same club, finishes 9th–24th | Play-off 80%, then 66%, 58%, 53%, 52% | 8.4% | 11.8 |
| Strong club, finishes top 8 | 62%, 52%, 45%, 45% | 6.5% | 15.3 |
| Outsider, finishes 9th–24th | 55%, 42%, 36%, 32%, 38% | 1.0% | 98.9 |
Two lessons jump out. First, even an elite club with good chances in every tie wins the whole thing only about one time in eight. Second, slipping out of the top 8 cuts that elite club's chance from 12.8% to 8.4%, because of the extra play-off and because the later ties can be tougher. That's why the final league-phase matchday matters so much for outright prices.
Now compare with the board. If the elite club is offered at 5.0, your expected value is 0.128 × 5.0 = 0.64, so about −36%. At 7.0 it's about −11%. Only at 9.0 does it become positive, about +15%, and only if your tie chances are right. Our guide to value betting explains this test in more detail.
Where tie chances come from
Your per-tie numbers are the whole bet, so be honest about where they come from. A few things to weigh:
- Squad depth: the knockouts run from February to the final. Clubs with thin squads suffer when injuries pile up.
- Domestic pressure: a club fighting for its league title in spring may rotate in Europe, or the other way round.
- The draw: who you face matters more than anything. Winning a tie against a mid-ranked club is very different from facing another favourite.
- Two-leg structure: playing the second leg at home is a small advantage, because you know exactly what you need. Extra time is at the second-leg ground.
- The final: one match at a neutral venue is closer to a coin flip than most fans think, even with a clear favourite.
Don't just copy last season's result. Club strength can change a lot in one summer.
Timing: when to bet on the winner
Outright prices change all season. Here's how the timing affects you:
| When | What you get | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Before the season | Biggest prices, many clubs still unknown quantities | Money tied up for about nine months; injuries and form unknown |
| During the league phase | Clearer form, early sense of who's top 8 | Prices on strong starters shorten fast |
| After the league phase and the draw | You know the bracket and the path | Fewer surprises, shorter prices |
| From the quarter-finals on | Only 8 clubs left; prices closer to fair | Little upside left on favourites |
A practical approach: if you like a club early, take a small stake at a big price, then wait. If they look strong after the league phase and the draw is kind, you can add a second small stake once you know the path. Never raise stakes just because the trophy feels close.
Remember, too, that money placed in August is locked up until the final. That money can't be used for anything else, and if the club crashes out in February, it's gone. That's another reason to keep outright stakes small.
Other outright markets worth knowing
- To reach the final: pays if the club wins its semi-final. For the elite top-8 club in our example, the chance is 72% × 62% × 55% = about 24.6%, so fair odds of about 4.07. This is often a more realistic bet than the winner.
- To reach the quarter-finals or semi-finals: shorter prices, fewer steps, less to go wrong.
- Winning nation or league: you back a country's clubs as a group. Simple, but the margin can be high.
- League-phase position: markets like "to finish top 8" can make sense once a few matchdays have been played, because the remaining fixtures are known.
- Top scorer: fun, but injuries and rotation make these unpredictable, and dead-heat rules reduce payouts when players tie.
Hedging when your club reaches the final
Say you put GH₵20 on a club at 12.0 early in the season. They reach the final, and their opponent is priced at 2.10 to lift the trophy. Your bet would return GH₵240.
- Full hedge: stake about GH₵114.29 on the opponent at 2.10. If your club wins, you collect GH₵240 and lose the hedge, for a profit of about GH₵105.71. If the opponent wins, the hedge returns about GH₵240, for the same profit of about GH₵105.71. You've locked in a result either way.
- Partial hedge: stake GH₵50 on the opponent. If your club wins, profit is GH₵170. If the opponent wins, profit is GH₵35. You keep more upside and still guarantee you won't lose.
Hedging costs a little margin, so it isn't free. But it can be a sensible way to protect a long-shot bet that's nearly come in. Some bookmakers also offer cash-out on outrights. Compare the cash-out offer with what a hedge would give you before you accept it.

Champions League times in Ghana
Ghana is on GMT all year. Champions League evening matches are usually played at 18:45 or 21:00 Central European Time.
| Central European kick-off | Europe on winter time | Europe on summer time (from late March) |
|---|---|---|
| 18:45 | 17:45 in Ghana | 16:45 in Ghana |
| 21:00 | 20:00 in Ghana | 19:00 in Ghana |
The league phase and the knockout play-off fall in winter. Later rounds and the final usually fall after the clocks change. Treat this as a guide and always check the listed time.
Outright accumulators: think twice
Some bookmakers let you combine winners of different competitions, like the Champions League and a domestic league. The odds look amazing, but you're stacking two big outright margins on top of each other. If each outright carries a margin of 20% or more, combining them makes the bet far worse. If you do try one, run the numbers through our accumulator calculator and keep the stake tiny.
A simple winner-bet routine
- Write down your own per-tie chances for the club you like, using current form and squad depth.
- Multiply them to get your winning chance and your fair odds.
- Compare with the best price across at least two bookmakers.
- Bet only when the price is clearly bigger than your fair odds.
- Keep the stake small, because the money is locked up for months.
- Review after the league phase and the draw. Add a small stake, hedge or do nothing, based on the new numbers.
Staking: outrights are a side dish
A good rule is to keep all your outright bets for the season to a small slice of your bankroll, for example no more than 5% in total, with no single outright above 1% to 2%. If your bankroll is GH₵500, that's GH₵25 total for outrights, and GH₵5 to GH₵10 on any one club. Outrights are fun because they last months, not because they're good value.
Common mistakes with Champions League winner odds
- Ignoring the margin. A 27% outright board is far more expensive than a 5% match market.
- Backing last season's winner by reflex.
- Assuming the favourite is "likely" to win. Even the favourite usually loses.
- Spreading money across five or six clubs and calling it "covering." You're just paying margin on all of them.
- Forgetting the play-off round, which adds an extra tie for clubs outside the top 8.
- Locking up too much money for nine months.
- Buying "sure" outright tips from WhatsApp or Telegram sellers. Nobody knows who will win the Champions League.
Betting on the Champions League winner with crypto
Some Ghanaian punters use crypto sportsbooks such as Cloudbet and pay in USDT or BTC. Outright markets for the Champions League are usually listed for the whole season. Because an outright bet stays open for months, the value of a volatile coin like BTC can change a lot before it settles, so many people use a stablecoin like USDT. Our guide to Champions League betting with Ethereum covers crypto funding for this competition.
Is it legal to bet on the Champions League from Ghana?
Sports betting is legal in Ghana through operators licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana under Act 721, and you must be 18 or older. Offshore sites are not licensed locally, so Ghanaian regulators can't help you with complaints. Read our page on whether betting is legal in Ghana before you sign up anywhere.
Tax on winnings
The Income Tax (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1129) removed the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings from 2 April 2025. Winnings may still need to be reported as income, so keep records. Our sports betting tax guide for Ghana has the details.
Bet responsibly
An outright bet should add fun to a long season, not stress. Most people who bet lose money over time. Set a budget, never chase losses and take breaks. If betting stops being fun, get help early. Questions punters ask
How do Champions League winner odds work?
You pick the club you think will win the final. If they lift the trophy, including after extra time or penalties, you're paid at the odds you took. Divide 1 by the decimal odds to see the chance the bookmaker implies.
Why are outright odds poor value?
Because the margin is much bigger than on a single match. A whole winner board can add up to well over 120%, compared with around 105% on a typical match, so you pay more for each cedi of chance.
How do I work out a club's real chance of winning?
Estimate the club's chance in each knockout tie, then multiply them. A top-8 club needs four tie wins. A club finishing 9th to 24th needs five, because of the extra play-off.
When is the best time to bet on the Champions League winner?
There's no perfect time. Early bets get bigger prices but carry more uncertainty and lock up your money. After the league phase and the draw, you know the path, but prices are shorter. Small stakes are wise either way.
Should I hedge if my club reaches the final?
You can. Backing the opponent can lock in a profit whatever happens, or a partial hedge keeps more upside. Compare the hedge with any cash-out offer before deciding.
Can I bet on the Champions League winner with crypto?
